Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

My wii has been glowing blue since Friday. I know that has to be pretty odd. Most of the updates don't longer than a couple of minutes unless something has changed. I hope nothing is wrong with it. I just got it back working a week ago. I haven't had time to look into the problem so I thought I would ask the friendly people on the DIS. Please Help. I'm afraid to unplug it. I want to play BOOGIE.

As far as I know it only glows blue when you have an update. Check that first. When ours has glowed for updates, it stays glowing until we update it or disconnect it from the 24/7 thing.

Haven't heard any specific about the DS Lite - just have 2 kids thinking about upgrading. ;) DS has a DS with a broken hinge that's still working. DD has really scratched up her screen. Both have around $100 in "spend" money and have mentioned wanting to upgrade to the DS Lite. I figured I would ask just in case something new is around the corner.

My DS has a DS as well and it is also badly scratched. I've been considerng a DS lite for Xmas but it seems like such a waste considering it is basically exactly what he has......

I think WII games will be a big part of the kids holiday budget this year? What's everybody getting? DS9 wants all....

Rayman2 (he and his friends love the first one)
Mario Galaxy
Mario and Sonic Olympic?
Mario Striker
Pokemon (something) he rented once and liked it.

I'm having him narrow his choices down to 2, then Santa will probably bring him a surprise game;)

What about Guitar Hero? I have no idea what it is? I read the review on Amazon and it seems like a guitar game but would someone not know how to play guitar enjoy it? I know it's very big with the PS2 audience.

Thanks for any advice.

Sue

I saw a post about Kingdom Heart, is a WII version coming? My kids love going to their friend's house to play that game.

Looking for some game recs for my family.

I really don't want to spend $50 per game, but it looks like I'll have to.

My boys really want the Ben 10 Wii game b/c they love that show. I notice it hasn't been released yet. Any place that does advance reviews of games? Is there any word out on that one yet?

Shrek the 3rd is on sale at Target this week for $20. Is it worth it?

I'm interested in the Lego Star Wars game that is going to be released. My kids have seen Lego Star Wars toys and are fascinated by them so I'm thinking they might like the game even though they haven't seen a star wars movie yet. What do you think?

I've read the great reviews of Galaxy and Carnival. The only thing is, we're not "gamers" in this house and the boys probably won't be interested in characters they've never heard of before. I think they'll be more interested in playing Wii if they are already familiar with the character or story.

Can anyone suggest any other games? I want to buy 3 or 4 titles. I will probably get the Wii Play for the remote.

thanks.

I am not sure how easy it is to get a screen replaced/repaired but there is a big difference, imo, in the lighting between the DS and DS Lite. We had Puzzle Quest in both a DS and DS Lite side by side and I was amazed at how much brighter the DS Lite is. It is much easier on the eyes. To me, that along with the broken hinge & scratched screen is enough to justify the upgrade.... especially since my kids are paying for it with money they have been saving. ;) The Lite doesn't seem to strain the eyes as much.

I was able to score a Wii console this morning on sears.com Yeah! I have been looking for about a month and never seem to be quick enough to get one! This is a christmas gift for my family :santa: I wanted to subscribe to this thread so I can be up with the new releases and game recommendations! Thank you for all the tips and ideas!

I saw a post about Kingdom Heart, is a WII version coming? My kids love going to their friend's house to play that game.

First of all there has been no announcement about Kingdom Hearts. There is always a rumor about a game being developed for just about every system. Disney started its own game division and have been trying to buy the rights to use Square's characters in future games and so far Square has said :p I doubt there will be one for quite some time.

The Wii version of Guitar Hero III costs enough for 2 games ($89) so if he isn't asking for it, I would probably skip it at this point, but there's a pretty good chance that once he plays it, he'll want it. It's super addictive and really fun. Actually real guitar players say they can't play the game, because it's too different from a real guitar.

I would suggest from your list (mostly very good games!)
1. Mario Galaxy (every Wii owner should have it)
2. Rayman 2
3. (surprise) either Strikers or the Sonic game tho there are others I would choose before these. A few posts back we were talking about the Pokemon game. We don't recommend it at all. It might be okay to play a few times, but it gets old really quick.

I don't know anything about it, but that link has just about all the info there is for it. No reviews yet, but they should soon--it releases on October 30th.

Again I don't know much about it, but $20 is a good price.

I LOVE the lego Star wars games, but they could be a little hard for your kids. Not having any knowledge of characters might make it less enjoyable, but they are fun, fun games.

I firmly believe that every Wii owner should buy Galaxy. Mario is the icon for Nintendo and they will have to get to know him sooner or later.

Judging from your adorable picture, the kids are pretty young, so get them the games with the characters they are used to (except Cars, it's too hard) and want to play.

Again I think Shrek for $20 is a good start. As for Carnival, Wario Ware, Rayman, Mario Party 8--all those games are about mini games which are perfect for young newer gamers, it's not about the characters at all.

So:
1. Wii Play
2. Mario Galaxy
3. Shrek
4. Carnival, Wario Ware, Rayman (1 or 2), or Mario Party 8 Or some other licensed character game like Spongebob or Ben 10.

ITA!! BUT I would give the kids a challenge of some sort before I bought them a new one to see if they can take care of something that is somewhat fragile. Or maybe with the first scratch, the system gets taken away for so long. It is very possible to get kids to take good care of this system. Now that they've seen how hard it is to play once it's messed up + some consequences for being rough with it=taking care of it.

Update: Wi-Fi Play Confirmed!
The megaton has arrived. After months, upon months, even years of worry that it wouldn't happen, Super Smash Bros. Brawl has finally been officially confirmed to support Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for online battles. Breathe out, rest easy. Smash is online, with 100% assurance. Though it might not be the vision of online you'd hoped for.

Sakurai revealed on SmashBros.com that you'll be able to mix it up through Wi-Fi with opponents around the world. You'll have two options for finding challengers – first, you'll be able to look for opponents among those players who you've registered as friends, with the "With Friends" option. This will necessitate entering in a 12-digit friend code from that person, similar to how Pokemon Battle Revolution and Mario Strikers Charged have handled friends lists. You'll be able to store up to 64 friends in this way.

Second, you'll be able to take on all comers, including strangers from around the globe, with the "With Anyone" option. You won't get any personal information about your opponents this way, so you won't know who it is you're playing. And no records of your wins, losses or anything else like that will be kept here – that means no online leaderboards or competing to be the best Smasher in the world. "With Anyone" seems to be geared solely for players who just want human intelligence controlling their opponents, rather than the Wii's AI. This will probably be disappointing to many, but it's definitely the more safe option.

And in keeping with that sense of safety, in-battle communication has been limited. You'll get absolutely no means of communicating with your opponents in "With Anyone" matches, and even with your friends you'll be limited to just simple text messages, keyed to your character's Taunt maneuver. This means a big thumbs-down to the idea of a headset and voice chat, barring some radical change in the next two and a half months. We've recently opined that this is a considerable oversight on Nintendo's part – time will tell how players will react to the exclusion.

But, to end on a brighter note, Sakurai finished up the big reveal with the confirmation of the return of a beloved character from Melee – the Sandbag. The big bag of beans with two sad eyes is back, and ready for more painful punishment. Whereas he starred in Home Run Mode in Melee, now he'll be put in place as a mini-game distraction for waiting players while each match loads. (He may, in fact, be back for Home Run Mode as well. That's a likely asssumption.) Also, interestingly, the bottom of the Sandbag screenshot shows that Player 3 is in the process of selecting the stage. This suggests that arena choice passes from player to player between matches, and stages won't be chosen randomly by the computer. It's possible that certain stages may be unselectable for play through Wi-Fi, though Sakurai's attitude seems to be ahead-of-time apologetic – that you can set up a match how you want, but that you may have to deal with slower connection times as a result.

Overall, definitely a huge announcement and confirmation. But with, certainly, some reservations. While it's a sigh of relief to be able to finally say "Yes, Smash is online for sure," it's a definite disappointment that desired options like voice chat seem all but thrown out the window. More details of Wi-Fi's role in other game modes are set to be revealed in the future, so we don't know all the details yet – but expect to hear much more about Smash's online functionality here on IGN in the months to come.

Thanks, I just saw your post about Smash Bros. That will be #3. They love the GC version and still play it from time to time (it was our first game, so about 5 years old!!)

I was able to score a Wii console this morning on sears.com Yeah! I have been looking for about a month and never seem to be quick enough to get one!

I have been trying to find one for two weeks now, and I check sears.com daily and still couldn't get it there. It showed up as "in stock" but after processing the order, it stated item is unavailable for delivery. Booo. Have to check earlier I guess.

If anyone finds one available anywhere can you post it? Please? I will not pay the overpriced rates on Amazon, ebay, etc., if only out of principle.

thx,
lori

I just ordered one!!!

Now I have to figure out what else I need.. I think I need another remote and nunchuk???

Good luck!

I was able to get one this AM from Walmart. Actually my sister was there looking for something else and asked at electronics. The guy said "we have one left, they just came in this morning, do you want it?" She sadi "yes" and then called me to make sure I hadn't found one. Yeah! DS Christmas is pretty much done now! My sister was able to get a bundle pack on Walmart.com yesterday for $580 something but that was more than I Wanted to spend

I think it is just look, look look.....we called a few stores and they all said the same thing, if you see it in Sundays ad, get to the store hours before opening and wait. The guy at Best Buy said that they got about 30 in for Sunday and there were people lined up at 6:30am.

Good luck!

Great choice!! I'm glad you read through and found that. It's really hard for me to offer the perfect suggestions without 1. actually talking to you or 2. all the right info.

And congrats to all the new owners!!:cheer2:

Any thoughts on the My Sims Wii game that came out today?
Is it pretty harmless?

Someone said it is similar to Animal Crossing which my 11 year old LOVES to play on her DS.

Also, has anybody heard anything about the Dance Dance Revolution game that is coming out? Do you think there will be plenty in stores or should I pre-order? Thanks!

I posted yesterday that I was having a hard time finding one----got one today from Best Buy! Yes!!! I am sooo relieved.
I missed the sale on Sunday but was "told" they would get 30 this week and were not saving them for the flyer. I have been calling them daily and there was a whole display there this morning.

Also, after posting yesterday, I stopped at our local TRU store and was told they were getting 50 in this Sunday. Luckily, I no longer need it.

My question. Best Buy only has the 30 day refund policy, should I open it and see how it works? I don't expect DS to get it until Xmas or even later.

Thx,
lori

I am an Animal Crossing maniac. :yay: My Sims for DS and Wii look to be very kid friendly. From what I have seen I get the impression it is a cross between Sims and AC. The characters are more cartoony than the other Sims games. I have preordered both versions... but of course they haven't even shipped yet. Since I am going to Target today I am going to see if they have the Wii version in stock - they are also offering a $10 gift card with purchase.

My DD got hooked on DDR when we were on vacation. I've ordered the Wii version so we can all play. I read that it has Wiimote support. I can just imagine the arm movements and knocking out an opponent!

All my friends are dead excited for My Sims coming out (Friday the 21st in the UK i think) lol thats the only thing they are talking about. So I was wondering before friday if any one had a review for it? That would be great thanks :D
