Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

Has anyone bought a WII bundle from Walmart? I am just curious if it rings up as one SKU or if each game comes up individually. I might order a bundle but there are a couple of games in there that we may not want so wondering if I could return those games for something else. Anyone know?

The games in the bundle are Zelda, Monkeyball, Sonic, Cars, & Warioware? Are these all appropriate for a 6 yr old? I do not know anything about Zelda but it is rated Teen. Thanks for your help.

Zelda and Sonic are probably going to be too hard for a 6 year old. I remember in the old days when people bought the bundle from Walmart, some were able to return some of the games and some weren't. At this point you should still have time to find just a system or a smaller bundle with stuff you actually need, so I would wait.

for lazy people like myself PLEASE oh PLEASE Wii-Wizard? I've made it through about 10 pages but my eyes are watering and my head is fuzzy.

I think I understand from your info that for my family of 5 who has no game system unless you count V-smile & Leapster....sad but true....we should get the console; and wii-motes & nunchucks not the controllers [unless they come out with new games needing them or we get old gamecube games]....but would 2 remotes and nunchucks be enough or do we need 4 or 5 of each...yikes? Also I think I'm ok not to get a memory card for now.

Obviously it comes with wii-sports but I want to be able to purchase 2-3 games in addition...

it is so darn expensive!! yikkos.

Thanks for the help!!

Trish

Okay, you've done great homework! Most games only support 4 players, so the max number of controllers/nunchucks you would need is 4. A lot of times you can share one controller too. The games have little pictures on the back showing what they support/need, so start there.

I suggest buying at least one extra controller/nunchuck and then go from there.

As for top 10 lists. I've thought of doing that, but I much prefer tailoring my suggestions for each family. Plus with so many games coming out, the lists would be out dated as soon as I put them together.

I need to know the ages of your children to better help you. But just a few:

1. Wii Play (It's a great way to get used to the system and plus it comes with a wii-mote!)
2. Mario Party 8 (Great family-style board game type game.) OR Wario Ware (fun mini games)
3. If you can pick up some old Game cube games and controllers. Then you can play them on the Wii without spending full price on new games. Of course, it could be hard to find good stuff depending where you are.

HTH!
The more information you give me, the better my suggestions will be. Feel free to PM me if you want to!

I like it better than Wii Play and most of the mini-games on Mario Party 8.
It really is alot of fun.

That's great considering the reviews I've seen for it aren't all that great. What do they know anyway!? lol

too be honest Cars is quite a hard game! It may look really easy but once you get further into it it starts to get more and more difficult! I'm 12 and I find it hard to play :p Even my friend whos 13 and is a game EXPERT (trust me on that one) can't even do it that well

You are so right! I'm an adult and my DH & I had a really hard time with it. DD9 & DD12 didn't like it at all. We actually sold that game on e-bay!

we have had this for about 2 weeks. My 3 boys 13,7 and 7 have played it constantly and love it!!!!!

Pokemon can be used with or without a nintendo Ds. the info is a little vague but you can use it with just the WII controllers.
we have had this one about 4 weeks the boy's had to have it but are not crazy about it at all. barely play it.

we have
ant bully
Barnyard
WII sports
WII carnival
open season
billy and mandy
monkey ball
and 1 or 2 more I can't recall.

the only ones they are playing are Barnyard, WII sports and Carnival.
carnival is currently the only one they are playing.

anyone have?? Spongebob? Or pirates of the carribbean???I need a few for Christmas ideas??

Thanks guys about the info on games and Walmart bundles. I am glad I waited and did not buy the bundle because I lucked out and walked into Walmart when they got a shipment in and bought the console. Now on to get some games. I went ahead and got WII play as suggested and will most likely get Carnival games before Xmas. Any other suggestions for a 6 year old. He is pretty good for a 6 yr old and plays lots of games on PS2 and PSP with his Dad that are too hard for me.

Glad to know about Pokemon as I was considering that one because DS likes to watch Pokemon. He has a Pokemon game on an old N64 unit that he likes to play but he really just guesses on which power to use. We have Barnyard on PS2 and he likes it but is it really different for WII or basically the same game? I would also like to know about Spongebob if anyone has it as that is an option for us for Xmas too. Thanks again.

What about Madden, Mario Party 8, Wario, or Rayman.

You are buying a lot of the licensed games (ones that come from movies) which are usually pretty bad compared to other games available.

Wii Play is actually kind of fun if you need an extra controller.

If they like carnival so much you should probably stick to mini game games like I mentioned before. Rayman is the best or Wario is good too.

Plus there's a few REALLY good games coming out before Christmas! Guitar Hero III comes out at the end of October. HSM: Sing it! Comes out Nov 6, if they're into that. Lego Starwars comes out the same day.

The one you pretty much have to get is Super Mario Galaxy, which looks just amazing and really fun. It drops on Nov. 12 and Rayman 2 comes out the next day.

Go here for a list of games and release dates: http://wii.ign.com/index/release.html
If you click on the title you can get more information.

I would suggest Mario Party 8 which you can all play together. Excite Truck if you want a racing game. Wario Ware should be good too.

Congrats on getting the system!

Yes Pokemon sucks! It's a watered down version of Stadium for the Gamecube. Totally not worth the money.

Barnyard is essentially the same game with different controls. I would buy Spongebob before Barnyard if you have the PS2 version. IGN didn't review Spongebob, but I usually really enjoy the Spongebob games for what they are.

I just want to suggest that EVERYONE gets Super Mario Galaxy in November. Ages 5-500. It's going to be the best Wii game by far.

I buy most of the theme games as i am sharing games for my 3 boys. I do not allow any real violent content games here.

I will say about the pokemon... My ds 13 and one of my 7 year olds are Pokemon obsessed. constant diamond and pearl on the Ds. every single day.. ad nauseam. Had to have the pokemon WII game. and like I said they are Not playing it at all.:confused3 so much for 50 dollars!!
As for Barnyard the 13 year old loved that and the little ones as well. But there is alot of reading invloved as you go on missions, so it can be a little frustrating for the little ones.

I did a preorder last night. I orderd a WWE Wrestling for WII that the 13 year old will have to keep aprt from the family games.
WII playground
wii pinball hall of fame all presale games.

Thanks for the other ideas I need 3 more to share from my inlaws.. so I will have to look at those as well. anyone Have pirates??

None of the games I mentioned were violent. And they are WAY better than the licensed games. But hey, I grew up playing that stuff too, so whatever. It's hard to tell a kid he should pick Excite Truck over Cars when they are attached to the characters. I just highly suggest Mario Galaxy as it is a platformer, which is what most of the licensed games are. And it's not violent.

Here's IGN's review of Pirates:
http://wii.ign.com/articles/792/792126p1.html

They gave it a 6.5, which is little higher than what the licensed games get. I thought I heard that the controls are pretty terrible and it sounds plenty violent to me (guns, swords, bombs).

And Pokemon is easily explained. The DS pokemon games (and all the old gameboy ones) are Role Playing games whereas the ones for the GCN and Wii are just basically fighters without a story or any lasting fun. RPGs have deep stories with lots of quests and things, whereas the fighters are just fighters.

If they are really into Pokemon, they might enjoy Zelda which is an Action game more similiar to an RPG. I would suggest you pick Zelda up WAY before pirates. BTW both Zelda and Pirates are rated T for Teen. Mostly just cuz you use swords.

1)POKEMON....my question for you is this....do they have it on the ds? Second is yoru wii online? IF your answer to either of these 2 questions is no then they are missing out on 2 of the BIGGEST parts of the game. Useing the pokemon you got from diamond of pearl to battle with rather then the stock pokemon with lousy attacks that the game provides you. Also they are missing out on battleing online against other opponents. this allows them to battle pokemon with people world wide. These are the 2 biggest reasons for having this game so I suggest doing both if they aren't it may breath new life into the game for them.

2)WWE for Wii is going to be so much fun. that really all I can say useing arm gestures to do moves and punches looks fantastic and as a huge wrestling fan for more then 20 years it's a no brainer for me to buy(and enjoy)

Support these 2 games...I'll post info on them soon..they will be fantastic!

July 11, 2007 - This is the Mario you've been waiting for. We're at E3, we're months from the final review, and we can tell you with absolutely no hesitation that Super Mario Galaxy is the real deal, and that any self-respecting Nintendo fan will buy this game on day one, beat it by day two, and continue a daily ritual of replaying it over and over starting day three. During an E3 gameplay session with Nintendo of America today we had a chance to sit down with a few of the Big N's hottest titles, and two of them hooked us so much we needed to return tonight for more. Metroid was one of them, and Mario Galaxy was the other. Read on to find out why.

For starters, Super Mario Galaxy is a return to former glory. As Reggie stated to day in the press conference, it's the closest Mario title to Super Mario 64 that Nintendo has created, and that means platforming, wall-jumping, and beautiful environments to play in. Many hardcore gamers (myself included) met the original Galaxy footage with a hint of skepticism. After all, it's different from what nostalgia tells us it should be, right? We've all seen countless videos of Mario leaping from planet to planet and pulling off larger-than-life acrobatics in outer space, but where're the larger full-world environments? Where's the traditional level design? Super Mario Galaxy still has it, and it still rocks.

In today's demo we had a chance to take a look at four different stages, each set within a different "Galaxy." We headed first to Star Dust Galaxy to check out "The Beam Star Trail", moved from there to Egg Planet Galaxy to battle "The Prehistoric Piranha," fluttered our wings to Honey Bee Galaxy for "Bee Mario Takes Flight," and wrapped it all up with Gateway Galaxy's "Imprisoned Grand Star." Each galaxy rocks its own fully-realized theme, made up of different gameplay elements, enemies, and missions very similar to the painting system on N64.

Despite what you encounter though, you'll have the same basic controls to work with. Players can control Mario with the analog stick, duck and crawl (as well as the trusty backflip) with the Z button, jump with A, and shoot stars at enemies with B. In addition you've got the spin attack with a simple shake, camera manipulation with C (centers it behind the pleasantly plump plumber) and d-pad, and use the IR with the A button for context-sensitive controls.

As far as general gameplay is concerned, Mario feels pretty dang good, but it isn't quite perfect in our eyes. Maybe it's the pulled back camera, or maybe it was a design choice by Nintendo due to the generally smaller levels, but Mario seems a bit slow. Perhaps the wee little man put on a few pounds since his last outing, but whatever the reason Mario feels like he could use a speed boost, as his acceleration is perfect, but his top speed is lacking. True, this could turn into one of those debates among hardcore players, but we'd be down for a bit more quicks. Aside from that, the plumber is golden in our eyes.

Speaking of golden - and yes, we hate to use that transition, but we will - you've undoubtedly seen Bee Mario make an appearance in the E3 video footage. This was another area where we were a bit worried at first sight (I recall shouting "What the hell is that!?" during the conference), but Mario has again won us over, as Bee Mario is the new frog suit. Just like in Super Mario 3, Mario has the ability to rock some magical transformations in Super Mario Galaxy, including everything from bee, to boo, to who the hell knows what else Miyamoto can think up. It works though, and it made Honey Bee Galaxy stand out from the others in a big way. As one of the larger levels we've seen, "Bee Mario Takes Flight" is played like a traditional Super Mario 64 level, having the world mysteriously floating in space, with a wrong step meaning eternal falling. Since the world is more immense, you'll need a few new tricks, and that's where Bee Mario (official name) makes an appearance.

After activating a power-up spot, a black and golden mushroom will show up. Touch the mushroom, and you go into Bee Mario mode, where Mario dons a new sleek bee suit, and can now hover for about five seconds. Once you jump, holding A will put you into fly mode, where Mario will actually gain height over time, allowing him to reach new areas. In addition Bee Mario can also land on gigantic flower petals that normal Mario falls through, making for some decent low-gravity platforming. As the yang to Bee Mario's ying, a simple drop of water will strip Mr. Overalls from his cute little suit, sending him crashing to the ground in regular-Mario fashion. Honey Bee Galaxy uses that to its advantage, putting huge waterfalls and tons of pooled sections all around the level's star.

As another interesting mechanic to Bee Mario, he can also climb on giant honeycombs or other surfaces (a gigantic bee friend, for example) and free-climb up them. Wall climbing isn't some never-before-seen mechanic in platformers, but we sure as hell haven't seen an overweight plumber do it while in a furry suit, and it's downright hilarious. Call it immature; we call it entertainment. Bee Mario can also combine the wall climbing with jumps and hovering, making for some amazing potential for level design in the future. Yes it's a little odd, but we're a fan of Bee Mario.

Moving to the other galaxies, there's still a ton of ground to cover. As one of the highlights of our many playthroughs "The Beam Star Trail" in Star Dust Galaxy was a hit, combining tiny chunks of floating levels with the blue gravity orbs that suck Mario freely in space, tons of star warps that send him blasting from planet to planet in flight, and an awesome level-building mechanic that gives the world its own soul. During a few key moments of Star Dust Galaxy, Mario walks out onto a seemingly dead-end chunk of level. Out of nowhere gravity kicks in, and starts sucking chunks of off-screen debris into view, literally building the level seconds before Mario steps off the ledge and into a black hole.

As you run, the level pulls away behind you and is built in front of you (or on branching paths, depending on the situation). You're on a set path, but you can't see where you can and can't walk until new pieces fly in, which is again based on how close you are to the ledge. At the beginning we took this area slow, as it was freaky and pretty damn intimidating. Once we started to get the fell though, it was a dead on sprint as we went with the flow and ran though a level that literally built itself as we explored it, and it felt great. Galaxy is truly next-generation Mario because of moments like these.

And they continued on and on throughout the playthrough. In just these four levels we navigated a gravity-flipping pill-like world, fought a huge plant boss (shown in the E3 trailer), crawled around on some creepy giant bee's body to find star pieces, dropped into holes that took us through the middle of a planet only to slingshot back out the other side, traversed a cool looking (though small) pirate ship in the middle of space, and dropped into warp pipes for self-contained gravity puzzles inside of larger planetary masses. Four levels showed off all that gameplay, and for that reason we're dying to see what Nintendo has in store for us in the final version.

super-mario-galaxy-20070711103712378.jpg

Even the two-player mode, which is still basic and a little buggy at this point, was a neat addition to the demo. Nintendo hinted about this one for a while, but we saw it in effect today. With just an extra Wii-mote a second player can jump into the action and take control of an additional IR pointer. The IR can be used to hold enemies down, destroy some obstacles (such as annoying rolling boulders), freeze Mario at any time, collect the mini star gems, or fire those same gems to stun enemies. The system isn't perfect, as we had player two accidentally freeze Mario multiple times in the process of aiming for an enemy or messing around in the world, but it's still pretty fun. We even got into screwing the other player over for the fun of it with the Wii-mote, freezing Mario until player one threw a hiss fit. It still seems like there could be more though, as you still can't grab coins or other items and drag them to Mario, or give the plumber a friendly grab-n-toss every now and then. It's a neat addition, but it's still kind of gimmicky too, and is more of an entertaining distraction from the main game as opposed to actual two-player co-operative play.

As a final note on our playthrough, Super Mario Galaxy is shaping up to be one of the prettier games on Wii, and this demo was no different. Subtle effects such as reflections in crystals, distortion in the water, puffs of smoke when Mario runs, and some of the best textures we've seen in a Nintendo game all help make Galaxy a simply beautiful Wii showing. The lighting is fantastic, and the world seems full of ambient animations that really add to the experience. Character models morph and stretch in classic Mario fashion, and the overall presentation is bright and crisp. There are still a few oddities with the camera, as you'll sometimes have quick glitches when dealing with smaller worlds or strange gravity changes, but we're more than confident that it's just one of those "E3" things, and that all will be well for the title's release.

We could talk all day about what makes Super Mario Galaxy a must-have title for Wii, and come review time (or future hands-on) I'm sure we will, but in reality it's about one major thing: Super Mario Galaxy is fun. When we're finished playing it, we think about playing it again. While we explore the world we're half playing, half admiring the level design and gameplay concepts. Nintendo may be reaching out to casual players and basing its new system on things like Wii Sports and Wii Fit, but the fact of the matter is that the company is still all about the gamer, and all about the games, and Super Mario Galaxy is pure living proof of that. This is the Mario you've been waiting for.

July 19, 2007 - If you've been paying any attention to IGN Wii's updates in the last month or so you'd notice a trend; we love Zack & Wiki. Every time we sit in for a podcast or get on camera, we promote the game. No we're not official advertisers for the title (and if we are, why aren't I seeing some of that scratch?), rather we're doing this for the pure love of the game. Zack & Wiki is a true Wii-only experience in every sense, whether it be style, gameplay, or just the attitude the development team is taking towards what Nintendo's system can do. We're not just about slamming poorly developed games with low scores or raving about the next big Zelda game; we're in the business to make sure quality products get the recognition they deserve, and Zack & Wiki is one of them.

It was our original intent to show off one full 480p video of Zack & Wiki in action, outlining exactly how the game's point-and-click play-style is used from beginning to end, but with the sheer amount of amusement that revolves around completing these incredibly entertaining brain-teasers we're holding off, and instead have broken them up into four spoiler-free clips. You'll see Zack doing some minimal puzzle solving, but it's nothing "game ending" or major.

For those of you that haven't had the pleasure of diving into our Zack & Wiki coverage thus far, we'll give you the basic breakdown. The game focuses on delivering classic point-and-click gaming on Wii, with a new Wii-mote enabled twist. You'll control Zack and his flying, golden, monkey-buddy Wiki and attempt to traverse the lands, defeating puzzle after puzzle and collecting the pieces of the legendary pirate Barbaros one chunk at a time.

In order to do it, you'll use Wii IR to command Zack from position to position, and then grab items and manipulate them in your hand by use of the Wii-mote. Need to twist an object or rotate a key? Simply twist your hand and watch it mimic your actions on-screen using 1:1 control. Part of the challenge in Zack & Wiki comes with the pure lack of direction the game gives you, as you'll drop into a level, scout the area out, and start making use of what's lying on the ground around you. No waypoints, no objective lists, and no hand-holding. This is a true adventure game.

In the interest of not spoiling anything specific we're going to keep our written impressions very brief, and instead allow the video to speak for itself. In general, however, we can tell you that the new playable levels at E3 were just as entertaining and mind-bending as the originals were during our initial playthrough months ago, and though we're still only seeing about 10% of the game, it's starting to show some real depth and true lasting appeal through its single-player challenge. As a quick note on the difficulty of the game, Capcom reps informed us that while many of the later challenges can be particularly difficult (some rumored to last hours even), a ticket system is being implemented into the game, which allows more novice players to cash in the coins you'll see scattered around the levels in exchange for restart tickets. Use one of these, and you'll essentially turn back the clock to whatever decision killed you, and continue on without needing to restart the level from scratch.

Also, while the videos we've posted are off-screen and therefore a bit washed out we can assure you that Zack & Wiki is one of the prettier Wii titles we've seen thus far, with its general style and graphical presentation rivaling Nintendo's own Super Mario Galaxy. And with that we urge you to sit back, relax, and enjoy a few more snippets of Capcom's unique and entertaining Wii creation. Oh, and don't forget to buy it. We had to say it…

I have been looking for a Wi for my daughter for Christmas. They have been difficult to find. Well today I was shopping in Walmart and they had 1 Wi. I puchased the Wi with the Sports game for $249.95. I think it only comes with one controller. Can anyone give me advice on what else I may need to purchase for her before Christmas. Like which controllers are best and any other add ons? I would really appreciate any and all info. Thanks
:dance3:

Zack & Wiki looks pretty cool! It seems to be similar in play to Kingdom Hearts. Are you familiar with that game? Just wondering if you agree. Kingdom Hearts was a HUGE hit at our house. If the game play is similar, this could prove to be a big hit as well. Too bad it doesn't have any Disney characters. ;)

I know it isn't Wii related but have you heard of any changes planned for the DS Lite?

You can find most if not all of your answers in the first post of the this thread where I put the FAQ. :teeth:

Congrats on getting the system!

The Wii comes with everything you need to play right away. From there I would decide about what other games you might want to purchase for your DD. If you want her to be able to play with friends or with you, you might consider picking up a second controller and nunchuck (sold seperately). A great way to do this is to buy Wii Play, which comes with a game (with some basic mini games similar, but not as good as Wii Sports) and a Wii-mote. You would need to buy the nunchuck seperatley.

Now a lot of the multiplayer games don't require extra controllers or some will, but you won't need the nunchuck. The best way to figure out what you need is to look at the back of the game box of the game you know you want. There you will find out what the game needs.

For more info about downloading games with the Virtual Console, please see the FAQ.

If you want to give us a little more info about your daughter, we'd be happy to recommend some games. Hold old is she? Is she familiar with any other game systems? If so, what games does she like? That sort of stuff.

Welcome to the thread!

I LOVE Kingdom Hearts. I think Z&W will have a similar style, though its very puzzle challenge based instead of sword slashing/monster bashing. It's a point and click game more like Mist, I think.

I'm not sure how much monster fighting there is, if any. IGN has tons more info, if you want to check it out. They are seriously in love with the game.

I haven't heard about any changes for the Lite. Have you heard something specific? I doubt Nintendo will do any big changes in the near future, though maybe in the next couple of years.

Haven't heard any specific about the DS Lite - just have 2 kids thinking about upgrading. ;) DS has a DS with a broken hinge that's still working. DD has really scratched up her screen. Both have around $100 in "spend" money and have mentioned wanting to upgrade to the DS Lite. I figured I would ask just in case something new is around the corner.

I know it isn't Wii related but have you heard of any changes planned for the DS Lite?

Zack a Wiki has a cartoony style like KH, but the game play is far from it. It is 100% a puzzlegame, where you must interact with your environment. It is set up in levels. It's not open run around adventure like KH.

Basically you get into a lvl, solve a bunch of puzzles by useing your surroundings, get to the end and then repeat on a new harder lvl.

From my understanding, some of the lvls are extremely hard and can take up to 1hour to complete. So don't go into it thinking that a little kid can easily play it.

Nothing new on the ds front. last rumor I heard was that a ds2 is being worked on, but chances of it being released anytime within the next year and a half are about 0%. I personally don't expect the upgrade until 09 at earliest.

Nintendo could always fix the problems with both kids systems if you called them if your kids would rather spend the money on games and not a lite.
