runrookie and john vn thank you both for your encouraging words! you both are so sweet. i agree that i needed to slow down at the beginning. it's so hard though being in the park (i drove down from the bronx, i don't usually run in the park) and not going a little faster when there are ALL those runners! you're right - the park is very hilly. i felt like i was always going uphill, even when i went in the opposite direction!

my friend who ran with me said that three laps around the park which is18 miles is harder than a flat marathon. yikes! i did 2.25 laps then finished the run going around the much flatter reservoir. i will continue to work on my short runs and hopefully gain strength because oh boy i am sore today!

bigdave 83 miles holy cow! :faint:

Oh, girl...that is it! You can't be saying I did well with my 10.5 when you did so much more! Geez, I'm a slacker! Time to go run a few more!
Hugs!

Did 16.5k today in two segments: first 3.5 with my learn to run group (they are on week 8 of 10!!) and then 13k.

I don't know what went wrong but after the first 9k of feeling good it just went downhill. I walked for a few minutes and thought I could run again but only made it another km before I asked DH to come fetch me even though I was close to home. It was dark and cold, and the temperature had dropped far. I hurt everywhere from my toes to my shoulders. I have never felt that sore except after the half marathons. I have missed two nights of sleep since Wednesday due to work, and while I slept some during the day it wasn't the same quality of sleep as being into bed all night.

Maybe, too, because it was my first long run after the half last Sunday?

I was wearing new shoes - the same model of my current shoes.

Or because this old bod ran twice today?

Maybe because of hormonal timing? I have read that women find certain parts of their cycle cause performance changes.

I have never asked to be picked up EVER. Well, I planned to go 12-14k and managed 13 so I guess that is good. Just disappointed to quit early, and can't believe I am sooooo sore.

Don't feel bad, I did the DH Taxi call too! LOL

Did a local half today and finished with a 16:20 pace. There were about 5 big hills so I am attributing some slowing to that. I am starting to get a little nervous about the full again. It seemed like I was making a lot of progress but I seem to have taken a step back. Please send some pixie dust my way because I am feeling like I will be swept for sure in January:sad2:

Have no fear regarding WDW. Almost as flat as a pancake when compared to your half. Take dumbo_buddy's enthusiasm and apply it to yourself.

As far as I'm concerned, hills are a walker/jogger/runner('s) worst enemy but our best friend. Makes you feel like dirt but that's their job. Embrace the challenge and your success, you will overcome any doubt.

Amanda-GREAT!!!!!!!!

Betsy-no way are you a slacker. Bet you'll be at the finish line WAY before me. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

IMFL-2013, I'm going! :woohoo:

Wow! Congrats to everyone on their long runs this weekend! I have been out with an injury for the last 8 weeks. I've done a couple short runs but attempted my first "long" run since getting cleared by my Dr. My goal was 8 miles. My pace was much slower than I was hoping for but I completed the 8 miles and I didn't (and still don't) have any ankle pain! I am so excited to be back to running! Starting to think I may actually be able to get back on schedule in time for the marathon. :)

irishtwinsCongrats on your race. Don't be worried, though. The results of one race are just that---one race on one day with one body and one course. And hills are killers. The Disney course is relatively flat--so that's good news.

Carolynn Sorry for the stonker. I have read that it can take a day for every mile you race for recovery, so the fact that you did a half last week means you are probably still in recovery. Don't dwell on it. It happens. Sometimes it's smart to pack it in and just try again another day. Better that than to keep going and possibly injure yourself.

guava WTG. I know just how you feel.

I managed 6 miles today--my longest run since August. It was so nice out today, that it was nice to go out and hit the road. Pace was slow--but I attribute that to donating blood a couple of days ago and my lingering rib contusions (5 weeks and counting)

Congrats to everyone and their Long Runs this weekend! We are two months from the big weekend and it looks like we are all still 'moving forward' in our training plans. :)

I am always encouraged when I read the posts here! I learn a lot from hearing how you all are doing. Those who had a challenging run this weekend, don't get discouraged. It is all part of the preparation process. I mean, consider if you never had a hard run until Race Day. You wouldn't know how to react and recover from that.

We train to learn what works and what doesn't. We train to figure out our hydration and fueling plan. We train to figure out our pacing strategy. We train to build our endurance. We train to develop our mental toughness.

We train to test our limits, perhaps extend them, and to develop a strategy to get us to our goal. Having a strategy for when the legs are tired, the feet are hurting, or the knees are twingy is just as important to success as knowing how 'the perfect run' should feel to us.

And perhaps, we are out there running because we have come to love the sport, the freedom, and the feeling of being more fit and healthy.

Yesterday, I ran 15 miles. I was not motivated. I was tired. I almost blew the run off. But I knew it was something I 'had' to do if I am going to reach my goal of completing the Dopey (5K, Half, and Full), followed by two more Fulls in Feb and March. It is an aggressive schedule for 2013 and I won't get there by being inconsistent (or by being reckless and getting injured).

So I got out there and completed that run. Running a Half last Saturday is probably why I am a bit sore still today (nothing a massage, the foam roller, and some hot tub time won't cure) but I am glad I got out there and booked those miles.

I am so looking forward to seeing all of you at WDW in 2013. All our hard work, foot time, and mental energies are going to pay off big time for us! :thumbsup2

Go WISH!!!!!

8 mile/16 mile back-to-back runs this weekend, and they both felt great! And this is after last weekend's AWFUL 15-miler...so yes, some runs are great and some are not. Don't get discouraged!

And I'll echo what other posters have said...Disney is VERY flat, except for going up a couple of overpasses, the hill after going under the Contemporary water bridge, and...maybe a couple of other places I've forgotten. But it's not bad.

Ad I have a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving...a 5-miler. :)

Planned a 14.5 miler today but from all the leftover branches on the sidewalks and in the streets, many I couldn't avoid, I rolled my ankle and twisted my knee. Cut it at 10.89 and walked another 1/2 mile before hubby rescued me in the car. I kept a pretty steady 12:10 pace until my knee started to hurt and then it went up to 12:22. :-(

Oh no not you too! I hope it is a minor injury and you are able to recover quickly

I ran my fourth half this Saturday and PR'd by 6 minutes from my last half 3 weeks ago! :cool1: My official time was 2:29:17. I was so psyched to finish in under 2:30. Now I need to get back on track for marathon traing. Sandy really screwed up my running plans. Totally wiped out my favorite route along the beach and boardwalk. Time to find a new long run route that goes inland.

Slow week here. Ran a few short runs, and then my tune up half in 2:15. I forgot how deceptively hilly the Disney course actually is, and I'm used to hills in NYC. Ugh. I was doing very well until 15k and then blew up due to a nutrition problem. Oh, well.

Congrats on all the long runs!
I did the Trenton 10K on Saturday (PR 1:09:09, took 3 minutes off) and then the Veteran's Day 11K on Sunday (PR 1:15:56, took 13 minutes off of last year's race!) for a total of 13 over the weekend. Felt great both days, a little shin pain on Saturday because of the hills, but not too bad, and it went away by mile 3 or 4.

All you marathon trainees (especially first-timers)....did you ever think you would get to the point where you would be running half marathons as "training runs"--and not even your longest at that!

Stop and reflect on your progress to this point. You are doing amazing things.

OMG...

the 5K is 2 months from yesterday.
the half marathon is 2 months from today.
the marathon is 2 months from tomorrow.

That is all. :yay:

I was just talking about how I used to see half marathons as a giant obstacle and now I say," its only 13.1." Its fun to see all the progress ive made in a year.

Hi all, I haven't checked in for a while, glad to hear all the good news here and I'm so sorry to hear of injuries and/or Sandy-related problems.

My training is finally catching up after an awful couple of back-to-back illnesses that knocked me out for a chunk of October. But I'm up to speed on the Galloway plan and have done all the long runs, including a 20-miler this past Saturday!

I used to do Higdon training plans in which the longest run was a 20 miler. So I can't believe I just did one last weekend.

I can REALLY notice how adding in walking, via Galloway, has made it significantly easier for me to go longer distances. My overall pace is slower but I don't mind.

The 20-miler, while at times boring, was not all that difficult other than the mental challenge of keeping going when I wanted to be done at about mile #8. And, I did not feel like I had to rest or nap afterward -- I always used to feel dead after a long run when I ran the whole thing, but not with the run-walk method. Legs tired, but fully functional and no pain.

So, so far so good. I don't want to jinx myself but I'm really hoping for smooth sailing until race day!

I enjoy reading everyone's progress here -- Good luck to all! :sunny:

Ran a 10k yesterday so I could get in a corral. I did a 10:36 mile in 73 degrees!!:cool1: I'm so excited; I was thinking wow; what could I have done in say 50 degrees. Two questions: called RUN DISNEY left voice mail about time. Do I email the results or wait for them to get back to me?? Also, what is the average temp in Orlando at 5:00 am??? Thanks!

And just think, once you move up to running ultras, you'll start viewing marathons as "training runs," and then you'll be really nuts. :lmao:

Seriously, it is quite a shift in your attitude when you first find yourself telling people your day's workout was only 13. :thumbsup2

I don't know about average temperature, but it was about 50 degrees when we started last year, I believe.

Was it really that cool? I remember the sun and no clouds and no breeze and the heat and I said I would never do that again.

Fast forward, I have an 18 miler this weekend, and I wonder what was I thinking when I signed up in August.

I have taken the walk/run approach this time, but am still working on ratios and keeping an average pace. Last weekends 12 miler went well with a 2:30/2:30 and good steady pace around 10:20, so I'm thinking a 2 run/3 walk for this weekend and hoping for a 10:45-11mm.

I finished this past year in 5:04 and don't care if it takes longer this coming year.

And about the run distances...I just don't talk about it to anyone, they just don't understand. I think anything under 5 miles is a waste of time to get hot and sweaty.
