Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

Way to go, 20 milers:cheer2:

I am so impressed! I can't believe we are only 3 weeks out--where has the year gone?? We just started winter break today so I have the next 16 days off!

My PF is kicking into high-gear though after laying dormant for a while. I have 8 miles this weekend but I think I will rest it tomorrow and hope to tackle it Sunday. My biggest fear is running the 8 miles and then not being able to walk for a week:scared:

Hopefully everything will settle down since I won't be on my feet teaching all day:thumbsup2

Did my 20 miler yesterday. This is my first marathon and first goofy race. I woke up this morning wondering if 20 miles is really enough to prepare. The last few miles were tough to get through, but it's too late now. Just have to hope that being at Disney will get me through to the end.

Oh, I totally jinxed myself. I whined about the cold a few weeks ago and now am planning my 20 miler with a median wind chill of 17. I was planning a different route but that puts several miles between the intracoastal waterway and the beach. I wish I had a running partner to freeze with.

ALSO NOTE - the monorail does NOT run for the 5k. Please head to the convention center at the GF and CR for 5K transportation. I have not seen this question asked this year, but the instructions reminded me.

Are there typically any road closures for the 5k, or can one drive straight to the Epcot parking lot without problem? This will be our first experience with the 5k.

You are facing some the unknowns that a first time marathon runner faces and why if asked, who I discourage from adding the pressure of Goofy. Please note that I am not criticizing the decision as I know several thousand Goofy runners have run their first marathon at the same time.

Saying that, what you are facing IS normal and something we all think about after hitting the long run. Do not worry as you have the miles under foot to get to the end. For most runners who peak at 20 miles, there will be a difficult spot in the 20-23 mile range where they hit a distance that has not been covered.... usually the max distance plus the distance normally added when long run miles increased. (not sure that makes sense).

What you may/will find with Goofy is that this point will occur 7-10 miles earlier as a result of tired legs from the day before, depending on the intensity of the half. Your mission on race day is to keep reviewing in your mind all the little POSITIVE thoughts that helped you get through all your long runs. When a negative thought flashes, follow it up with one of these positive thoughts. The longer you can keep the positive thoughts flowing, the better Sunday will be.

Good Luck and enjoy your taper.

No issues at all. The 5k is entirely in Epcot Parking and Epcot. You will park in a lot prior to the parking roads used for the race

This section was written for the other race weekends where only a few of the WDW resorts are 'host resorts' In the case of the Marathon weekend, ALL RESORTS are covered by marathon transportation. I understand cutting and pasting language but in this case, they should have stuck with the original language. It IS good to see the SoG will be included in the bas transportation this year.

Thanks coach! I had a mild anxiety attack when I read the host resort language. I was very careful to stay at a host resort for the Wine & Dine. I was under the impression that all resorts were host resorts for the Marathon, so I booked myself into the POP.

Coach? Others? Do you know of a good stretch to do in the middle of the race if plantar fasciitis flares up or similar arch discomfort? I usually role with a golf ball after a run, which really helps. But after my last 17 miler, particularly when walking, I felt some pain in left arch only. It went away by the time I stretched out and drove home.

I also read where "loop" lacing in the middle of the shoe helps with arch support. Anyone have experience with that? TIA!

Also good luck everyone with your final long training runs this weekend. I know my 20 miler is going to be really tough for me. With that being said, anyone else feel like three weeks taper is too much time? Honestly can't believe I'm even thinking that! Perhaps my story will change in a few days after my long run...

Coach- need some advice. I have not been training as much for this full because I had trained for the NYC marathon that didn't happen. Since then I have run three half marathons but nothing over 13.1 since October when I peaked for the November race. I had planned on 15, 18, 10 for the next three weeks (I ran a half last weekend) and was good with that plan. Here is my problem. I have only run 7 miles total this week because I have bronchitis and I cannot breathe! There is no mucus, just super tight bronchial tubes and zero air-flow. I actually ran the half like this and it wasn't pretty, it took me an extra 30 minutes to finish over training pace, yikes! So, should I attempt anything this weekend or just rest? And what milage should I try next week? Still do 18? Thanks for the help:)

I have done three week tapers for all of my marathons and have always felt refreshed and ready to run. The key is to continue to run but to dial down intensity and milage a little.

The better stretch for the middle of the run is a simple calf stretch. Find a curb or other elevated block and place the ball of your foot on the elevated spot and stretch.

One thing you may want to try it going by the KT Tape booth and let them tape your heel for PF. It's not a great idea to do something new on race day, but in this case, it may alleviate some of the pain while running. If the expo is too near the race, then find some locally and tape it out for a run. KT Tape has a video for PF. Pay close attention to foot position and tape stretch as application is critical.

Finally, loop lacing will loosen the area of the hot spot if one loops over the area. Definitely try this on a remaining long run as some trial and error is required.

I would say intensity does not necessarily fall off, just distance. If one does cut intensities, it is perfectly ok.

Yikes.... the rule of thumb is run if above the neck and rest if below. I would wait for it to clear up as trying to push through can delay recovery.

Saying that.... What would your comfort mileage be? If you can get 16 next weekend then go for it. I have rarely run greater than 16 for a training run knowing that I can tough out 10 miles. It takes a strong mental game but one that is relatively easy to master. We can discuss other plans if there is an issue....

Hey all, I am Bib # 42768 for the 1/2 which I believe puts me in Corral B. I have a few questions, are there porta-potties in the actual corrals? I am a go to the bathroom at the last minute kind of person and am trying to plan.
Also what is everyone wearing? I know it's kind of dependent on the weather but I don't like running with sleeves. Anyone else wearing a tank top?

Thanks Coach, I definitely having second thoughts about doing Goofy. I'm guessing I shouldn't do another long run next week to calm my nerves?

Ugh, I was so hoping you would say I could run:(. I will rest tomorrow and cross my fingers for Sunday but if I am still not breathing I will not try to run.
I think I am comfortable with 18, not sure about 16. I know it is all mental but I may need a pep talk from you to even get through an 18-miler next week! I feel so unprepared at this point.

AHHHHHH!! Shades of Green is included in the bus transportation!!!!!!!!! I contacted them when we first made our reservation, long, long ago, and at the time there wasn't any and they told us that most participants walk to the Poly and go from there. We were totally fine with that and had already scoped out the route.

Once again,

AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::thumbsup2

Well, I did my 14-miler today! The pinnacle of the Galloway 1/2 program....and I finished it - upright! Weather was crummy, just above freezing and a wet snow/rain shower mix. Thankfully no wind.

I felt great throughout the first 8 miles, then started to fade a bit but hung on. Was able to increase my run/walk ratio the last bunch of miles and kept a good pace.

An ice bath and chocolate milk after I got home, and now I'm reflecting on how far I've come since the summer as a beginning runner. I finally feel ready for the Half next month, and know that I'm going to enjoy it too.

Reading everyone's inspirational stories here has really helped me with the training!

Now time to taper over the next 3 weeks and just enjoy thinking about being back in the "World" next month.....oh yeah, and running around it too!

Safe training everyone & Merry Christmas!!

I'll be in the same corral as you! :cheer2: Not sure about the porta-potties and what everyone is wearing but tank tops are not my friend. For me it will depend on the weather. I like to layer and either will bring a sweatshirt to throw away or a light jacket I can tie around my waist. And I'm right there with you on the bathroom. Totally a nervous habit and a last minute necessity. Good luck!!:thumbsup2
