OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I posted this a back in mid-November...

Any one have any experience with an injury 9 weeks out? The ortho says it's post tib tendonitis and the athletic trainer who specializes in running injuries says either shin splints or a stress fracture ... I had completed an 8 mile the prior week and was in the middle of my 9 mile last weekend when the pain got too bad to continue...I plan to stay off of it until December 1st, per [my Doctors'] advice. I've switched over my training to include a little elliptical, a little bike and a lot of swimming.

So - my question - has anyone successfully gotten back into their training program after taking a month off this close to the race? I'm signed up for the half marathon. Assuming I can run again starting December 1st - that gives me about 5 weeks to get to where I need to be to at least finish the race. Possible?

I wanted to thank those that replied with suggestions and encouragement. It was hard to stay off of it for almost four weeks but I am so glad I did! I swam like a fish during the month of November and finally got back to running December 1st. Successfully completed my final 12.3 mi long run this past Monday - pain free. Now tapering and feeling ready for the half next weekend.

Thanks again for the advice and best wishes to everyone!

Good Morning Everyone. Advice please!

Last weekend DH and I did our 10 mile run. He was fine during the run, but he started having pain in the side of his foot that afternoon. When he tried to do his short run on Tuesday, he couldn't get more than 1/2 mile and had to turn back. The foot is not painful to the touch and only hurts when he runs. He is an athletic trainer, so he says knows what the doctor would say..."stay off of it and don't run the Half." He really wants to run the Half...so he won't go see a doctor. I'm against a brick wall on that one.

We have one long run left before our taper...would skipping the long run be ok? Should he skip our last three runs all together and just rest until the Half?

Just rest until the half! He'll be ok and it sounds like you've done your training, he might not finish in an 'amazing' time but he'll finish and hopefully with minimal pain. With a week to go, all he'll do is injure it worse if he tries to do more training now. Rest and run the half and....have fun!

I'll save the Co-pay

STAY OFF IT but Enjoy the half.

Seriously he should consider NSAIDs and icing for the rest of this week and no training until race day

One last thing....check the shoes! How many miles do you have on them since they've been replaced? Most times when I have had foot pain after a run it's been because I needed new sneakers. Mine don't show external wear at all but usually around 400 miles on a pair, I start getting foot pain. Now is not the best time to replace them this close to the half, but if they are the cause of the pain...well it would be a toss up for me.

I might also consider KT Tape for the foot. They are usually at the expo and tape for free. I have done it for ITbands and quad strains. If nothing else, it gives a mental boost!

How "real time" is the run tracking from Disney World. Will spectators be able to somewhat accurately know where their runner is, or is using an app like mapmyrun with tracking better? My wife will be spectating and I am not sure my phones battery will really last the whole race (it was close on a 15k)...but would rather let it die if its the only real way she can see where I am at.

I would actually suggest against this, unless you've used KT tape before. I wouldn't do ANYTHING new on race day, especially something that could affect my gait.

Thanks for the advice. He's alternating advil, heat and ice and he is going to take off until the race. let's hope for some Disney magic!

Real time is well, not real time you get alerts as we cross check point mats. Locations are:

Half -
Start, 5k, 10k, 15k and finish

Full -
Start, 5 mile, 10 mile, 13.1 mile, 15 mile, 20.5 mile and finish

In the past tracking alerts have been hit and miss. I understand that the new service that Disney has used since Labor Day is working 100% better. So if it is that good, you will know within a few moments of the runner crossing the mat. It is no more granular than that.

If looking for something more granular, then the app you mention of RunKeeper Pro are options. For the runner, they can shut off the wifi and 3G/4G antenna and the phone will last for more than a marathon. Mine was less the 33% used in 5 hours. However, on the other side, the spectator's phone took a real hit. Again, they need to have wifi off as there are no hot spots along the course. Since using it the first time, we have the spectators turn their phones off except for every once in a while. Continually checking location is neat but kills the battery. Depending on where plans are to see the runner you can use a combination alert, expected time of arrival sheet and app.

Assuming you run a 10 minute pace, the spectators could confirm you start time and 5 mile times via alerts. Compare than with a pace chart and if they are waiting at TTC (mile 9) that they should expect you about 90 minutes into the race or about 710-720. The 5 mile time would confirm the pace and then they could turn the phone and app on about 75 minutes into your race.

Hope this makes sense...

Runner tracking is likely to be way off, if past performance is any guage.

The tracking isn't incorrect. It is likely to fill her phone with location messages after you cross the finish line.

I am sure he understands, but he should titrate off the advil about 24-30 hours pre-race start

Yep, makes sense. I wasn't sure if they did alerts every mile or like you said, so it is good to know. We have track my friends too, which can be extremely accurate or be a wide radius, but likely using a combination will be the best bet.

My SIL missed the registration for the kids races, and my older nephew really wants to "run" during the weekend. He's been telling everyone when we talk about our Disney trip that we are going to Disney to run, so he'll be bummed if he doesn't get to be in a race. I'm just wanting to know what my chances are of being able to switch to the stroller division. If there isn't anything extra that comes with being registered. I'm hoping Disney will take my $5 and I can push my nephew until the finish area then let him get out a run to the finish. Does anyone have experience with the stroller division for the 5k vs the non stroller division? Do you get anything extra with your registration, or do you pay $5 more for the privilege of pushing a stroller for 3.1 miles?

For the Wine and Dine in october, our experience was different. I had three runners tracked (including myself) and it was pretty accurate and timely with updates.

How much running should I do this last week. I've been training since August, avg about 15 miles a week, had a few longer 10 mile runs over the past month and have tapered down to just 2 runs the past 2 weeks (3-5 miles) and feeling fatigued.

I am planning on running a 10K on New Years day and that's about it before running the half We'll be at the parks W-F so will be doing plenty of walking.

Should I be doing more or just rest?

Rest is fine. If you want to do a 2-3 mile easy run on Thursday, just to "loosen up", that would be good too. Just don't tire yourself out form too much park walking.

Maura

I would push Maura's suggested run to Friday. That will help to encourage you to NOT be in the parks all three days. It will also loosen up the legs from the two previous days of parking.

More important that how much should I run the last week is remembering to hydrate and eat well. It i all too easy to get bought up in the food counters in the parks. Also, most folks do not drink enough fluids while parking to compensate for fluids lost while just standing around. These days can lead to overloading on salt and near dehydrated state from not drinking enough.

Take time to people watch and do not feel like you must hit everything hard.

Hey! Hopefully quick question. I need to get my corral moved up. I have a 15k race I can use, but if I print out the full results from the internet, it's 50 pages. Do I have to print all 50 pages or can i just print the first couple of pages and then mine? And is the internet printout enough or do I have to have something else? and what do they do with the printout - okay, it was more than one question.:rolleyes1 thanks!
