OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Well, I've hit my first setback. I've been running for over 2 months now with no problem. Then, last Friday, I hurt my knee when foolishly pushing a pop-up camper up the driveway into the garage. It's a little stiff in the morning, and I can walk on it without much problem, but I tried running yesterday and gave up after about 30 seconds. :headache: I'm going to check with the doctor tomorrow to make everything is okay. It stinks that I've had no problems running, but one stupid act sabotages my training!

So, all you runners, let's hear some POSITIVE stories of beating injuries! I've already made my ADRs for January, so I'm NOT missing this half-marathon! :goodvibes

About a week before the princess half marathon, my knee was really sore, couldn't even walk on it with sharp pains. I found some knee strengthening exercises and stretches, after four to five days, it was getting better and just in time for the race, it stopped bothering me. I was doing this race nonetheless, but I was able to do it with little to no pain. I think it was from not properly stretching. Now I always stretch and have cwx 3/4 length compression tights which work awesome, looking to get another set soon.

Mostly a treadmill runner here.... What does it make a difference in? I'm a newbie.

Coach beat me to it but I would make a point of getting in at least half of your miles on the road. You use your muscles different on the road then you do on the treadmill and, IMO, I think it is important to train the same way you run. I know in the summer it is hot in some places and in the winter cold but there are ways to mitigate that. You can run before the sun comes up or after it goes down and with the right running gear you can run through negative temperatures.

The treadmill has it's place, even the pros use them, but they don't put in most of their miles on them.

THAT'S what I'm talkin' about! It also reminds me that I have some good knee strengthening exercises I should start doing again. Time to fire up the ol' birth ball! (Okay, technically an "exercise ball", but my wife used it when she was pregnant...)

Thanks.

Two weeks prior to my first WDW Half, this past January, I had a pain on the inside of my lower leg. Every time I would take step it would hurt. Two days before the race I tried to run and it was very painful. I read somewhere online about KT Tape, so I went to the expo and picked up a few rolls. I put the tape on and ran the half with no pain. In fact, I haven't had that pain since then.

Doug thats crap, dont worry though , you have LOADS of time to get it fixed, I was a cripple a few months ago, achilles probs, I always find that if I am patient and go back to basices and warm up and down carefully and do all my stretches it gets better, I couldnt do a mile a month ago, this week Im up to 7 no trouble.
Be cool.

ps anybody on facebook part of the disney running group?
just wondered if I could match up some names.

Well there is a January Marathon FB group, a Princess group/page, as well as a DL 1/2 page and a specific 2011 DL 1/2 page. Those are the ones I've noticed anyways.

Well, after a little sleuthing, there are apparently dozens of groups relating to Disney running!

Is there one that DIS Board members usually join?

Hey Runners!

Maybe this is old news, I'm very behind on my Disney related news due to a super busy summer, but I did get a chance to read my AllEars newsletter about the monorail time changes:

As of July 11, 2011, the Epcot Monorail now operates only up to one hour after regular park closing time. The Magic Kingdom Monorail system will also only operate up to one hour after regular park closing beginning August 1, 2011. This curtailment of service is being made to allow for maintenance on the Monorail system. This means that there will be NO Monorail service during Evening Extra Magic Hours later than one hour after regular park closing times. These changes will not affect morning operating hours for the Monorail. The Magic Kingdom Resort Monorail service starts at 7 a.m., while the Magic Kingdom Express Monorail service starts 30 minutes prior to Magic Kingdom opening time. The Epcot Monorail service begins one hour before Epcot opening time. While this change in Monorail service is in effect, watercraft (where applicable) and additional buses will be available to transport guests
.

Towards the end it seems to imply that this monorail change is temporary, so maybe this is just rehab? I don't recall seeing anything about this in times past, but I don't usually pay that much attention to this kind of thing. If this was the case in January then the monorail won't provide transportation to the race start? Just wondering, not worried that this is going to be that much of a problem.

In training news, I did a cycling class this morning that totally kicked my butt! I've been skipping out on it for awhile, but I find I don't motivate myself as well as an instructor does.

While only Disney knows for sure the new monorail schedule (which I do believe is to provide more time for train and rail maintenance) probably won't impact marathon weekend. They change the normal monorail schedule specifically for marathon weekend anyway so what that normal schedule is probably doesn't matter.

If they do decide not to run the trains early they will provide more buses I'm sure. It will be less convenient but not a big deal.

Hi! I'm jumping in to introduce myself. I ran the full last year and had such a great time, that I signed up again. I can't wait! I'm running the best I've ever run right now and I hope I'll continue to improve and cut a LOT off my time from this past Jan.

Definitely will not affect the marathon. Imagine the number of buses required to offset the load shift.

The monorail system has been a little flaky this year. In April we were there the the Epcot loop was down two of the four days we visited. At times I can be a little slow... I waited for about 40 minutes to grab a photo of the monorail over the Cars Topiaries. Dolt

During the marathon in January the monorail was down. We went to Kona Cafe for breakfast with plans to go to MK afterward. There was a long wait for the boat to get across Seven Seas Lagoon.

The following month we were leaving MK right after Wishes... again the monorail was not working. The lines for the buses going to any of the monorail resorts and the TTC were LONG.

Hi Paige, nice to meet you!

It took my son and hubby 2 hours to get from breakfast at Contemporary to the marathon finish line due to being stuck on a non moving monorail for 1 hour. It happens. Luckily, it took me almost 5 hours to finish the race, but they barely made it. Within 10 minutes of my finish!

The motor on the unit works a little more than 'just' overcoming the belt friction, This allows the motor to perform some of the work at the given speed. Additionally, unless you are running with a wind that moves about 2/3 your speed or faster, you are not facing any wind friction. The rule of thumb on a mill is to raise the unit between 1-2% elevation to add the same work.

Thanks. I'll do that.
