OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Maybe this is a dumb question because my parents never took me camping growing up, but how does a woman use a tree or bush when nature calls? I can understand the guys, but I don't understand how all you women are saying you prefer this option :rotfl:

Funny story about this: beware of burrs! I used the brush outside of Epcot and, to be less than graceful in my explanation, I just pulled down my tights (it was 2010, when it was crazy cold) and squatted back best I could. I had done it on trails during training a couple of times, so it wasn't too awful. Better than waiting in line for a port-a-potty. I figure both options are gross, so I'm going to do whichever is fastest.

The funny part is that when I finally DID stop at a port-a-potty, I realized that I was absolutely full of burrs! I had to spend about ten minutes picking them out of the insides of my clothes before I could go on. I was lucky that I only had minor scratches and nothing bothered me the rest of the day. Well, nothing except my eyes watering from laughing so hard about having burrs on my heinie!

The weather is TERRIBLE here in scotland today.RAIN RAIN RAIN.(Fl style)
I am very proud of myself, I gave the weather a big fat 2 fingered salute and went for a 7 mile run, furthest yet this year and still no pain,

Good for you for defying the weather! This is my first summer living in South Carolina (moved here from Ohio), and the heat and humidity are daunting. I've been finding myself wimping out and getting on the treadmill if I haven't gotten my run in before 10:00 AM. Did manage to go out and run with DH at lunchtime today, since there was heavy cloud cover and a breeze. I think I just really need to refocus on becoming a morning person, a constant battle for me! Congrats on your great run.

The weather in New York isn't much better. I signed up for a race every weekend this summer to ensure that I get out of bed to run. Summer running in this humidity is brutal!

Do you put an elevation on the treadmill to make up for not running outside?
I can remember reading somewhere a rule of thumb re elevation but cant remember.
Maybe coach Charles can answer this.
I think its ok to wimp out, heats totally diff from rain.

The great news about the heat and humidity is that you will get used to it. My first summer on the Gulf coast I thought I would die. But now, I do run mornings and after work outside; well up to about 95F. Its not fat but I do it to sharpen the mental game of the run. Remember, to hydrate.

General rule of thumb is 1-2% incline on a treadmill to offset the treadmill effect and the lack of wind resistance. Most of the time I will push folks to 2% and accept a 1%.

Yup another one here who runs into the bush if possible. I am slow and don't have time to wait for porta potties. It never fails I am always pulling burrs out of my pants. I have also stepped ankle deep into water before that really freezing cold year 2010.

Glad to hear that I will adjust to the heat. My daughter runs cross country and she seems to be getting used to it pretty well, so it's good to hear there is hope for an old geezer like me too.

As for incline on the treadmill....I need to do better about that! 2%...ugh! I will take this advice, whether I like it or not. Thanks!

After Goofy, my traditional celebration takes place at Raglan Road. I like to go there after my ice bath and shower to have a few pints of Guinness to re-hydrate and replenish my carbs. If Disney offers Marathon Monday again this year, we'll have our real celebration dinner at Victoria & Albert's on Tuesday so we can meet up with our friends and drink around the world at Epcot on Monday.

Sunday night is always a little iffy for me as I never know if I am going to have an appetite by then. We will make our standing reservation for the meal at Japan early that evening. It's a treat to tackle the stairs for the meal and even more so - post meal. We have had ressies there every year since 99 and I have made most years, though a couple times got stuck at Salad and sushi. 2007 was the year I discovered where the elevator was for the trip down.... Only used it once.

We will probably do V&A or Cali on Monday evening. It would be fun to get four more folks for a trip to the Chef's table that evening. All it takes is the magic of being the first call picked up on the 14th. Well maybe, I swear that costs just went up, again.

Good ideas! Maybe we'll make two reservations then. One for Sunday and then another for Monday. I'd like to go somewhere close, so maybe we'll head into MK and do Liberty Tree Tavern on Sunday.

It sounds great, I always wanted to do a tri, but Im not sure I want to buy an expensive bike and the thought of getting in some of the water scares me, not the wildlife ,more the yuk that floats about.

Exactly! I saw this and thought it was a perfect way to try multisport races. Maybe if it works out I'll try one of their longer races!

I agree re weather, even on a 3 week holiday we got used to running in the heat.

Re elevation, thanks, I usually do half:blush: , I think Im clever if I do one, I am going to try harder, thankyou.

Yeah, on the treadmill I always select a 2-2.5% incline. It makes a difference.

I was able to make all our reservations for the trip yesterday, It's getting closer!
I was able to get all the reservations I wanted for our party of 10 except dinner at Cape May Cafe. I'm assuming it's closed for renovation during that time because I checked several days and it said nothing was available.
We decided to do our celebration dinner at Whispering Canyon Cafe. It's always been a family favorite, and after running 39.3 miles, all you can drink milkshakes and all you can eat BBQ should be well deserved!

I was unable to get one of my restaurant picks too, even with flexible day/times. CM said it was possible the restaurant hadn't downloaded their inventory and recommended I check back in a few days.

WHAT NO CAPE MAY !?!?!?

Holy Bat Guano, Robin, While not extremely superstitious, I have had breakfast with Goofy prior to each of my Goofy Challenges ... as well as most Mickeys.

Just hopped on the computer and made my breakfast ressies. Whew... now I don't have to worry about a broken leg or something.

Sorry for the scare. It was my party size that was the issue. Oddly Cape May Cafe is the only place that won't accept my reservation for a party of 10. I guess I'll have to call and link two parties of 5 together.

Mostly a treadmill runner here.... What does it make a difference in? I'm a newbie.

The motor on the unit works a little more than 'just' overcoming the belt friction, This allows the motor to perform some of the work at the given speed. Additionally, unless you are running with a wind that moves about 2/3 your speed or faster, you are not facing any wind friction. The rule of thumb on a mill is to raise the unit between 1-2% elevation to add the same work.

No problem....

I had forgotten that I was going to make ressies this weekend before the system opens up to non-resort folks.

I had the same problem. Got the same BS from the cast member about it not being loaded in the system. So after the 2nd day of calling I cut my group in half, suddenly there was availability. Didn't get our requested times, but did still get in. Lesson learned. So if you have trouble getting into here, try limiting group size. We got a group of 15 into every other place no problem.

Off to bike and swim in the morning to make some room for all my dining plan meals scheduled for January :)

thanks for making the ressies for all of us papaof3 - just so others know, this guy got six of us to join him and his wife in on the weekend for running (and me NEVER running before in my life and now attempting a 1/2 marathon!) so he was gracious enough to plan the trip and make all of our dinner reservations for 15 people for five nights! We are having our celebratory dinner at HDDR - enough food to get back what we ran off - and enough beer/wine included in the price to celebrate! hey what happened to the beer drinking smiley? alright, banana it is!:banana:
