OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Wow, now there's a name from the past. Tracey is great. How are things with you?

Yeah, I went into DIS-hibernation when I started grad school. Done now. :)

I wish it was only muscle. Clothes are slowly getting tighter. More of a diet issue I think. I tend to be eating slightly more as the running makes me hungrier. I have lots of time to lose it but would prefer to never gain it in the first place.;) I'll keep an eye out for you in January. I'll be the one you're flying past on the outside. Congrats on prepping for your 4th half. I'm afraid once I do one I may be hooked. Could be worse additions I would think.

Well, we're generally not "flying past" anyone. We walk most of it. Easier on the knees and you get the same medal. :) Drinks after, maybe?:thumbsup2

I forgot to introduce myself! I'm Brea, and my next trip is Sept 2012 when I am planning on running my first HALF marathon!!

Wow! Lots of new people over here! Hope leading up to the races I can get to know some of you.

Chris 8 miles is a great run--ALWAYS be proud of each milestone you accomplish.

I expect I will sign up for Goofy before the late April price increase. Maybe I should do it soon--after I run in Boston I may not love the idea of doing another marathon! Probably should book air too, but it's such a roller coaster these days. Although I shouldn't expect it to go any lower. Then all I'll need is a room and I'll be good to go. Well--except for the training!

Any one who has run during marathon weekend have any suggestions on what is the best Disney resort to stay for ease of getting to and from the race?

I have a reservation for the Boardwalk because I thought that one might be the easiest.

I only have one data point, but I will tell you that staying at the Poly was a dream during marathon weekend 2011. Not only was getting to the start super easy with the monorail from the TTC, but for letting my family spectate during the half, and getting to the parks (well, MK and Epcot at least) on Sunday morning and early pm without worrying about road closures.

Good suggestion. I didn't think about taking the monorail to Epcot. It drops you right off at the starting point. I was going with the Boardwalk because of ease of walking to and from Epcot for eating/drinking (mainly drinking) after the race for the following few days.

I've stayed at Coronado the past two years with TNT and haven't had any problems. I'm booked for BLT for this coming year. I can't wait for it!

I've stayed at ASSports and at CBR the past two years. Getting to and from the races was very easy at both resorts, although the lines at CBR were much shorter than those at All Star.

Actually....
While I stay at BWV more often than not, the resort seems to be plagued with bus issues. Saying that, if you get out early then they are not really all that bad. For the most part ALL resorts are really not all that bad. Every year you hear of this resort or that where busses seemed to not run for a while. If that occurs, all you need to do is wait. The race will not start without you, assuming that you are not arriving at the bus stop at 4:40 and you are the only one in line. Mears has an on site coordinator in touch with dispatching located at each resort. So if a snafu occurs then busses will be rerouted.

The Epcot resorts have a great side benefit of a cool-down walk post race. It will require a swipe of a park pass but it's a great way to keep all the parts moving for a mile or so while you cool down.

As stated above, the monorail is a great option. You will be able to sleep in for a bit longer than bus folks. From the Poly you can walk to the TTC - removing the transfer from the equation. Note that while the monorail is a great option, it too can have a long wait on race return. I think I waited for the train for 20+ minutes in 2010.

I stayed at AKV in 2011 and will again in 2012. I didn't have to wait for buses coming or going either day.

I'm running Goofy and want to do a fall marathon. When is the best time to run a fall marathon and have time to recover?

I stayed at Music this year and had no issues.

For 2012, my parents are coming down and we're going to have a big celebration of my first full marathon and my dad's 70th birthday. It'll depend on the rates my CM sister can get when she can book rooms (six months out I think), but there's a good chance we'll be at the Poly. If not there, the Yacht and Beach Club.

We're doing Bay Lake Tower this year. It's our home resort, on the monorail, and people who don't want to come to the start can just mosey out the front door and see us run by!

We're booked at OKW since they have the most reasonable GV's. I know there was some debate about whether you could walk to the start of the race or not. If you're not checking a bag, I couldn't see any reason why walking to the start would be an issue. Someone mentioned that there was a fence up stopping people from doing it marathon weekend, but I didn't see anything up during the princess weekend. I'm really hoping it works out and we can walk. It'd be nice to sleep in a little each morning. I bet the walk to the corrals from the epcot parking lot is just as long as the walk would be from our room:rolleyes1

I read somewhere or heard on a podcast to be aware of noise when you're trying to sleep the night before race. The Electric Water Pageant makes it's way past CR at 10 pm. Just something to plan for.

I did the 09 Half (and am considering doing the 12 full) and stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter. You are literally across the street from the starting corrals. I'd say if it's in your budget stay at Orleans.

YES IT DOES!!!

We stayed BLT for 2010 and had a bay view. Could not figure out on night 1 what the noise was. Then watched the parade. Friday night out of a dead sleep, the parade. Saturday night heard nothing nada. Not because it was quiet but because of being tired. Yes, the parade will wake you, but then so will the toilet flushing 3 doors down the hall, the sound of the moon crossing the sky, as will the beating of your mates heart. You will hear the bus stopping at the front of the resort late in the evening, dropping off new arrivals and think it the marathon bus. Long way of saying, especially for newer runners that you really need to get a great night's sleep a couple nights before your race. The night before will be restless at best for many.

I stayed at BLT for marathon weekend 2010 with a friend, and yes, we definitely heard the Water Pageant. We were just trying to get to sleep at that point. This year another friend and I stayed at POP. I have to say, it was faster and simpler getting back to POP on the bus after the race then it was getting back to BLT via the monorail. POP bus service was awesome, and we will be staying there again next year. :)
