OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Yep! My sis has been on-course cheerer for my running partner and me at Disney races (and others in Central Florida for him since I don't live there). She's one that's at as many places as she can get, regardless of the crazy start times. My dad seemed less than thrilled at the early start hour - hence thinking about the Poly or the Yacht and Beach. We'll see!!

Thats really great of her!

You know your dad can still get to the Ply in time from the Yacht and Beach and then go back, relax and be out there for you there....

Make sure to allow time to heal. It is all so tempting to come back a couple weeks early. I know you will.
Its SO SO tempting !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just done our entry for the relay (did my half entry yesterday!) :woohoo: :woohoo:

Is it a Chip & Dale medal, it's all very exciting :)

:dance3: sure is!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep! She's coming to DL to be our on-course support too. Though she's also said she's in charge of our shirts because we blended in so well she almost missed us both at the WDW Half. LOL. I fear we will be in fluorescent orange.

You really are so lucky, cant wait to see what she picks you guys to wear, we were thinking about getting tartan hats( see you jimmy hats) to wear for fun, although we dont need to stand out for anybody!!!

My husband has missed me at EVERY RACE of mine that he's been to. :rotfl2:Apparently he has no idea what I look like.

We're thinking we may do something involving our birthdate since we ALL share the same day. No, my sister and I aren't twins. She was born on my 5th birthday. And his birthday happens to be the same day. Like "Team m/d". Though with all the relay-ing we might confuse people.

My one main thing is NO PURPLE!!! I don't want to be mistaken for a certain group. :P (Though the fact that they cheered for EVERYONE and not just their little peeps during the NYC Half did raise them in my eyes a little.)

Which group is that?

it rhymes with shmeam in graining

:lmao: :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl:

I have nothing against what they stand for. I just get annoyed when a) groups of them block the race path and are mindless of the people behind them trying to get around and b) when you pass huge groups of their spectators who just stand there and do nothing until one of "their" purple shirts comes into view.

That said, two of their team coaches stopped to help a running partner and me during the WDW Half ~ running partner when his shoe came untied...she said "No, no. Don't bend down. I'll get it!" and me when I was taking my shoe off to check my toes which felt weird. She started to tell me it was just a little further, then realized what I was doing and checked them for me.

It's Team in Training. I've done 5 races with them. Three as a fundraiser and 2 as a mentor. I'd be curious to know why the negativity.

I already stated why.

1) WAY too often TNT people walk in tandem in groups effectively blocking others from passing. Which is poor race etiquette no matter which way you look at it.

2) The people cheering them on will ONLY cheer for TNT people and be conspicuously silent for everyone else. The NYC Half this past weekend was the ONLY race I've run with TNT people in it where the support groups for TNT were actually cheering for everyone, so maybe they're finally getting told that it's just poor etiquette to only cheer for a few.

Basically it just adds up to many of them that I've encountered seem to feel a sense of entitlement because they're TNT. Like when they were doing a speaker/recruiting thing in the local running store I go to (speaker things happen here a lot, and this was the first time I've experienced this) DURING REGULAR OPERATING HOURS and there was this assumption by TNT that anyone who walked into the store was there to hear about and join them. Literally five of them lit into me about why I should totally do things with them and not on my own or with my running club. I'm surprised I got out of there without being forced to join.

Yes, it's a great cause. I just don't want to sell my soul to them.

Thanks, interesting concept, dont think we have that in the uk.

Isn't there that Asthma: UK group or something like it? Lots of groups do the same basic thing now - just for different organizations. My issue is that in general it's a small percentage of what you raise that actually goes to the organization. A lot goes into travel, etc. I'd personally rather do a local race and do fundraising through crowdrise or just directly to the charity of my choice. That way I KNOW where 100% of my money is going. That's just me.

(Also, it's inevitably cheaper for me to finance my own way to an out of town race than it would be for me to cover the cost I would be unable to raise for a charity (usually $3500 minimum for a major race), so there's that as well. If you don't raise the minimum they require, they make YOU pay it. Thus making what could have been a less than $500 race all-told cost $3500 or more.)

Really? That is good....not their usual style, I hate to say. Bugs me at the Disney races when they only cheer for their peeps, like no one else is needing cheers. Glad I'm not the only person who has observed that. :rolleyes1

Yeah! They were clearly louder for their peeps, but they were all cheering for everyone.

I totally agree, it bugs me sponsering somebody thinking that some of the money is going to even race entry to be honest, I have run few times for diff charities but have given it ALL over to them.

I love cheering folk in.Its when they smile and they are tryig not to, I love it. I remember my very very first half, I had lost a ton of weight and to do a half marathong was on my list of things to do when normal!
I was fading and this guy who was walking home post race shouted encouragement for me, I cant tell you the feeling he gave me.. it was a tingly feeling, it really bucked me up and even after 5 years I think of him and the differance he made to my running and the fact that he will never know.

THIS! :thumbsup2

It does help so much! I had running club teammates cheering me on in various places on the course and it helped a lot. (Gotta confess it did hurt when some of the guys who had said where they would be had packed up and left before I got there, but I know they were going to do a run for Japan, so it's ok ultimately. I know I'm slow.) They push me to be a better runner.

But it's the people I don't know who ultimately give me these huge boosts. I love running down Main Street and through the Castle, and I teared up a little with them. But I was sobbing as I finished running through Times Square - partly because at that point, I knew I was going to finish and finish stronger than at WDW (even at just before the 15K mark I could feel it) but also because I love NYC so much, and it's my home, and I was doing something so few people get to do (even the NYC Marathon doesn't go through Times Square)...it was overwhelming. And some people who were cheering us all on I think thought I was hurt or on the verge of giving up and they were SOOOO encouraging. I was like "It's ok! I'm happy!!"

I love random things like signs that say: "I don't know you, but GREAT JOB!" or "GO TOTAL STRANGER! I'M ROOTING FOR YOU!" or (a personal favorite) "YOU ARE ALL KENYANS!!!"

My sister, my running partners, one of their roommates and I had breakfast
at Cape May the morning after the Half. After breakfast, we went out to cheer on the marathoners and were there until the last person and the end bikes came by, cheering on everyone. And what floored us was that marathoners were congratulating US on our HM medals!! (Well, the three of us who ran it) We all swore that in 2012, we're going to do the same thing. Congratulate every one we see cheering who's wearing a HM medal...or even the 5K medallion! We are ALL winners when we try!
