OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

For anyone who is having problems with tight calves the runners world September 2011 edition has an article about how to massage them out. It has really helped me. I'd post a link to the online site, but my iPhone is having some problems when I try do that.

Personally, I am really ready for the taper period. I finished my last long run before the race yesterday. And I am really glad for a little bit of rest time and shorter runs. This has been a tough running season for me because of my ankle/tendon injury. At least I don't have pain anymore which I couldn't say that a few months ago. I've had to drop down to the half marathon, but I think it's the right thing for me to do at this time. (already thinking ahead to the marathon in 2013, though.) Good luck to everyone in the final weeks!

Ouch! Those nursing injuries I hope you heal quickly!

I did make it through my 20 miler today. Sniffling and coughing but made it. Thankfully it was all on my treadmill in the comfort of my home. I doubt I would have lasted outside. I actually bettered my time, LOL! Pace was 10:58 for this 20 but was 11:29 for the 20 I did 2 weeks ago. I'll take it! I know I'm slow but I'm gettin' there! :thumbsup2

You are a far better person than I! I don't know that I could do 20 miles on a treadmill. The longest I've done indoors is 12 miles, and I thought I'd go out of my mind. Yay for you! And I think your time is GREAT!

Quick question ... does anyone know if the food court at Pop will open early on Saturday and Sunday so that we can get a coffee and a bite to eat before the races? It's my first stay at Pop so I don't know how things work that weekend. I figured I'd better be prepared if they're not open.

Yes, all food courts and fast service counters are open race morning; usually around 2 AM

20-miler went in the bank today. Temp here was 28 F. It was supposed to much warmer. I think the worst part of the experience was the 20-minute ice bath. I'm still shivering.

Yeah I did 20 miles on the treadmill once....ONCE! Good job though sounds like you are right on track.

Life is finding various ways of getting in the way of running. Still getting out for as many and as much as I can. We were just recently blessed with a newborn DD and I'm trying not to stress the DW out by disappearing for significant periods, especially when I am at the office all day and have this fantastic trip approaching. She has been very supportive though and is planning her training for the 2013 Goofy.

I haven't gotten the distances that I would like but this past weekend I hammered out a 5k on Sat, 10 miles Sunday and 14 miles today. My legs feel good, I was mostly concerned with today's run and how my legs would react to the back to back longer runs. My plan (MfM) calls for a taper from here on out, trying to decide if I push it and try to get an 18 miler in next weekend. It will be tough with the holiday and all. Or do I just call it good and follow the taper from here on out?

Hope everyone is healing up the injuries and finishing strong!

If yesterday's long run was your longest then I would suggest running 16-18 next weekend. If you do not get there do not fret as you will most likely make the distance at the race, though you will need to play with the mental side of the run on race day.

Well, I was supposed to do my long run this morning, but my three year old decided it was a good idea to get up at 2 am so I couldn't get out. Now I feel behind and am stressing about getting in another before tapering (I'm doing the 1/2) - it's hard working FT, the holidays and a toddler, KWIM?

I have to say though that this event is helping me in the holiday goodie department - I'm for the most part staying away from the cookies, etc. I made at home and here daily at work bc i don't want to gain any unneeded weight before this run - this goal is helping with that!

The rooms should have coffee makers too.

Well, true, but I would rather stick myself with a VERY, very sharp blade than have Nescafe the morning of my first marathon.

I’m actually still trying to even decide if I’m going to be able to run. I have a nagging shin splint that made me miss my second 20 miler this weekend. I’m getting very nervous about it not healing in time.

Not a question about the main races, but I figured someone on this thread might be able to answer my question. I know that an adult can run with kids during the shorter races, (or at least it seems that way in pictures I've seen,) but can an adult run with a kid during the mile? My SIL signed my 3 year old nephew up to do the mile, and I know he has the energy to complete the distance, but I'm worried he won't get the concept that he's supposed to follow the course for a mile. Can someone run the mile with him just to ensure he doesn't get lost?

Did you go to a doc? If not get to one I am a little worried that your incident may have created an avenue to a hard tissue injury. If you have and they said no issue, then I would avoid any pounding work until New Years. Then I would only go out for a light and easy run to see if the area has healed up.

I believe so.... No medal for mom though

Thanks for the info. Between everyone in our family that is running, I think we'll have plenty to go around, so I'm sure whoever runs with him won't mind missing out on the bling.

Another question not related to the running part of the weekend, but the packing for the weekend part. Does anyone have a packing list that they've used in the past for Goofy or Dopey? I pulled out the duffel I plan to carry on with all my race stuff to pack for our Christmas trip, and then got the idea to pull out all my race stuff to see how it would fit. I got everything in, but feel like I probably missed some obvious things... The things I put in were
-3 race outfits including skirt, shirt, and undergarments
-3 sets of throw away clothes
-3 long sleeve tech shirts in case of cool weather
-3 pairs of arm warmers for cool/ warm weather
-5 pairs of compression socks/ calf sleeves
-2 running jackets to wear after the race while waiting for family to finish
-2 pairs of shoes
-10 bondibands (I don't really need that many, but I like to have my options :rotfl:)
- spibelt
-Garmin and charger
-body glide (any ideas if that has to go in my ziploc bag - I'm not sure if TSA will consider it a gel...?)

Is anything obvious missing from this list?

That looks like a lot of clothes. Unless the weather turns cold, looks like it has been warm in FL. Are you planning on carring fluid, or wearing a hat?

If you are planning for cold (just in case), you might want to add some gloves to your list. Also, what about fueling (gels, etc), gear bag, bib belt/safety pins, music gear (if u use that), and sunscreen?
