OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Finished my last long run today... Took coaches advice and aimed for 20-23 and felt so good did 24. Sore but plenty of time to reboot. Lots of ice and muscle milk tomm. Hope everyone is recovering well.

Going out for a 10-12 miler today. Way too cold here for my liking. It will only be a high of 31. I hate these last 2 months of training in cold weather!

I am excited to do the half and get the Donald medal. It will be my DH's 2nd half. But I am having some "not doing the marathon" blues. Can't believe I am saying that! Haha! I am already in full planning mode for the Goofy next year.
And the best part is that I got my husband to agree to do a full. Last January, he said he would never run. In April, he said he would try to train for a 5k. In May he agreed to do a half-the Wine and Dine-just one half and done. In August-he signed up for the Donald. Yesterday, he agreed to do the full next year! I like this trend! It is great to have a running buddy. Last year when I did the full with my best friend-I had to train all alone because we live 8 hours apart. I am so excited for race weekend to get here!

Doing my last long run tomorrow morning and for some reason am feeling very blah about it and the whole race. It has been a real struggle to get any mental highs from my running for several weeks now. Not having any fun :sad2:

Work has been very stressful. Holiday prep hasn't even worked its magic - Last year at this time we were celebrating my 50th birthday and my son's college graduation.

This year I am having my 1st empty nest Christmas...my son is a manager in EPCOT, so we will be having a late Christmas with him during race week. Definitely could be worse places for him to be working and us to visit, but I just can't seem to get into the holiday or running groove.

Just needed to vent a little. Thanks for "listening".

Hang in there!!! Sounds like there is a lot going on emotionally. The holidays are a wonderful time, but a stressful time for a lot of people. Sending you some pixie dust for a better week!!!

Got through 20 yesterday. Felt blah most of it, but for some reason ran faster than normal by about 15 second/mile (might explain the blah). Ready to taper and be ready for the goofy in a few weeks!

Congrats to everyone who's made it throught their final long runs. I hope you can all take a minute (in between icing the various aches and pains!) to reflect and be proud of how far you've come. The race is just icing on the cake (although I ust admit, I am one who eats the cke first and saves the icing for last!) Don't forget to pat yourself on the pat for all the hard work you've put in up to this point.

As for me, 10 miles today--a short week. Going to try and run at something closer to race pace to see how it feels. Unless of course I decided not to! Seem to be feeling a few of the undesirable symptoms of my herniated disc. Probably should just bag the whole run. Decisions, decisions.

I love icing! Can't wait for that. Only three weeks now!

Take it easy, Maura, I know you want to make it to the half. I'm sure you are more than ready. Remember we are in this "marathon of life" and I'm sure you will be sad if you have to take another break for injuries.

Well, I'm right on schedule compared to Goofy 2010....if getting injured 3-4 weeks out is the plan like last time. :sad2: Did a trapeze class (my first) yesterday and pulled something in my upper hamstring/glute region and can hardly walk. Actually, when I was on the trapeze, it felt like something popped, which scared me a lot, so I immediately stopped everything and iced it. But no LR today. If it settles down, I'll try to get a good long run in this week, or next weekend. I do Ironman with a 2 week taper, so that won't be a big deal.

OR...Goofy is going to be a more generous walking ratio compared to the running...just like in 2010. Oh, well....

Great job with your last long runs everyone! I have a taper question for you experts. DH and I are using Hal Higdon's 1/2 marathon novice program, as this is our first 1/2. However, we are a little ahead of him as far as mileage goes. I think the longest run he has had us do thus far is 8 miles or so and we did 10 last weekend and 11 yesterday without much problem. My question is this...he has us do 9 miles next weekend and then 10 miles the weekend before the race. He does suggest we taper after that, and only do around 6 miles total for the week of the race. I am not sure doing 10 miles that close to race day would be beneficial...what do you guys think? I was thinking we would do around 10-11 this coming weekend (no better way to celebrate Christmas than a long run, right?) and then only do around 7-8 the weekend before the race. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Your kind of off the reservation with his plan. From a build perspective he runs you increased miles a couple weeks then lower a week then increase for 2... I am probably not in the majority but from a coaching perspective I would pull back Christmas weekend to 6-8 then push back up to 10 New Years weekend. I am assuming from your post that you are not injured and in need of a longer recovery period. By doing this you are allowing your legs this next weekend some recovery that they may be looking for. I would then follow his plan for the last couple weeks.

Will your plan work... yes. Go with what you feel is best. I guess that I would suggest giving yourself an out pre-run for your next run at a shorter distance.

I am in your camp. Not sure if there is something going on in the east/central Texas thing. Mine was a little more weird. I was mountain biking and caught a root. I unclipped and stuck a foot down, hyper extending the hip. Great news is that I avoided the tree I was about to hit. The bad news is that I am scrapping today's run and looking to make a 3-4 hour run Wednesdayish now or as late as next weekend myself.

Take care and heal up.

Thanks Coach! I know we are a little off the reservation...I tend to push a little too hard and do too much, which is why I was a little concerned about doing a long run for the next 2 weekends and then the race. I will definitely take your advice into account and see how we are feeling this weekend. Sorry to hear about your injury! Hope you are feeling better.

Ouch! Those nursing injuries I hope you heal quickly!

I did make it through my 20 miler today. Sniffling and coughing but made it. Thankfully it was all on my treadmill in the comfort of my home. I doubt I would have lasted outside. I actually bettered my time, LOL! Pace was 10:58 for this 20 but was 11:29 for the 20 I did 2 weeks ago. I'll take it! I know I'm slow but I'm gettin' there! :thumbsup2

Just finished 10-miler in 36-degree weather. 20-miler tomorrow and then taper. Tomorrow is supposed to be at least 10 degrees warmer.

Thanks so much DizDreamer - I think your pixie dust is already kicking in!

My long run went pretty well this morning - plugged in only Christmas music on the Ipod and the park had nice dusting of snow. Sometimes I over think my training and that can be my undoing. Today was just check the Garmin to clock off the mileage and no stressing about pace. It was a chilly 23 degrees, but I just took it easy and let it flow.

Decided to spend the afternoon stitching and reading in front of the fire and my Christmas tree.

Hubby picked up Chinese take out for dinner and I now am going to continue enjoy my Sunday with a movie and some popcorn::

Hope everyone's injuries heal quickly! My arch was still feeling a little cronky today so I chose not to run today. Plus My nose/head is more stopped up today after being out in the cool (45 degree) weather during my 3:45 run yesterday.

One more 20 miler done for me too. No pain or problems afterwards, just tired legs. Then I had to hurry home, pack up, and get to the airport to fly out on a trip for work.

Time to taper. Still lots of running to do, just not such long distances.

I think I just may be able to get through this Goofy thing after all.

Set out for last 20 mile run Saturday, 14 degrees. Nozzel of fuel pack froze up after first use. Calf cramped up at mile 15 so I figured it was time to stop and drink from the bladder of my pack. Finished with 19 miles @ 9:40 pace, last 4 miles were @ 11 - 12 min pace.

Did 8 miles this morning and the calf felt good.

Great job everyone getting your long runs in.

CrystalCastle If you can last 20 on a TM, then you for sure could have lasted outside! COngrats on a successful 20 miler.

Also congrats to all the other long-milers for what sounds like pretty confidence inspiring runs.

I deferred my run from yesterday until today. I think it was a good move. I took a nap (the early football games just weren't inspiring enough, I guess!).

Today I did my scheduled 10. I almost chucked it, but realized I was probably just having a small motivational issue. I think I'm ready to race-not train. Anyway, went out and decided to push to closer to the 8:30 that I would like to run for the half. Ended up averaging 8:20 instead, so pretty darn good.

So time to sit back and read the paper and search for a pierogi recipe. Yesterday I made Bigos--looks like the Polish Christmas meal is shaping up.
