Is this a good map?

I know links have been posted, but it would take some time to locate.

My mental game needs work. Last Monday, my oldest had a melt down. I have one coming home from college tomorrow and another the next day. I have gotten myself into a Christmas program..thought they just wanted me to sign (ASL) a song for one Sunday. The program will take every night next week and I'm on the look out for a good day to do my LR (24 miles) next week. My living room is a wreck, as I am waiting for our new entertainment center to arrive...yeah kids all left and DH and I bought a big flat screen TV. I'm not complaining, it's just I'm not one to do much more than my regularly scheduled events (that means my volunteer stuff). Adding the extras freaks out my mind. I think once the LR and Christmas program are over I'll settle down.

And I'm questioning should I have trained with a run/walk mix...think reading all the post about it has me second guessing myself. That's about enough from me...back to writing Christmas cards...

It's a great map. I think there is a small issue with one point in the MK parking lot, but in general, it is good. Turn on the OpenStreet map option for lots more detail

If you have some walking in your training it might not be so bad to walk a minute or two every mile. The walking stride is so different than running. It would be a little risky adding something different so late in the game. There are a few things at work here. You actually run a bit faster pace per/mile than a steady state runner. You sort of check your stride when you slow down each interval, and when you start back up running you accelerate. This is all different. If you have been doing LT training or tempo interval training and have walked between intervals, you might be OK.

The walk/runners are using walking because this is how we train. Come back after the marathon with walking in your training and break 2:00 hrs. at the Princess!

Another newbie question. I made the mistake of watching the hour to hour weather forecast today. It called for rain starting late this afternoon, so I headed out late morning for a 4 mile run. About 1 mile into the run, it started pouring and never stopped. Right or wrong, I finished because once you're soaked, your soaked and there are no guarantees that it won't be raining in Disney so I stuck with it. It was warm enough out - high 50's/low 60's that I didn't get chilled from the rain. Thank goodness I was wearing a hat - it kept the rain out of my face and made it bearable. That brings me to my question - in the event of rain, what should we be carrying with us - a thin throwaway poncho - like the dollar store kind? Any special clothing I should be wearing in addition to/instead of my regular running clothes?

Assuming you are running, I would not really plan on bringing anything for a rain. Most likely in FL in January, the rain will come and go before you can stop. You are dead on - once you get up and running your body heat will keep you warm and adding a non-breathable shell will actually do more harm. You will get drenched as your sweat condenses on the inside of the shell; potentially chilling you.

Saying that, I would have a trash bag or thin poncho ready for race morning. It serves as a shelter in case of rain while waiting but also as a wind breaker while waiting.

If you do get caught in a rain on race day, look at puddle patterns. Disney roads are paved in a way that the asphalt seams are on lane lines. There will be a small amount of standing water on the little ribbon of road. (note that a lot of folks run the stripes as they are also some of the flatter strips of road). Also, the white lines painted on the roadway are reflective and they glass beads in the pain create a super slick area.

Once you are wet, pay attention to how your feet feel. Calused areas tend to soften and create new blister spots. If you feel a hot spot, stop at and aid station and apply lube. Likewise, once soaked, friction areas tend to pop up once you begin to dry.

To combat rain, wear a hat or visor. The bill will keep the rain from hitting your face. THis will help keep you relaxed and the rain out of your eyes.

Great job of pushing through

I can never seem view a map correctly on that mapmyrun site! What am I doing wrong? When i look at it is so "far away" there is not detail. When I zoom in a little, I can only see a little of the map at a time. Ugh!

You in full screen mode?

There is a control on the right that changes between full screen and the smaller view.

Joan Deep breath! And don't second guess yourself or make any changes in your plan now. If it's going okay, just stick with it. Run/walk is not a magic bullet for everyone. And I won't even speculate on whether/when it ends up being a faster/slower route.

Sending extra energy your way to make it through the next couple of weeks. And if it was me....a little extra chocolate!

Did a very nice speedwork yesterday. Of course, 1/4 mile intervals are the easiest to make through, but still, I felt good.

I also heard back from NYRR about the NYC marathon. They said they would accept my "13.1" time from the Martian half for guaranteed entry for 2012. (Long story short on that one--the course measured 13.4, not 13.1 and they gave both chip and length-corrected times).

So all in all, a good day (Except for having to deal with the speeding ticket I got!). Not too long now.

Thanks for the encouragement Maura. And I'm actually planning on making some chocolate cookies today for my son's arrival later today (he just completed his first semester at college). When I take the choc. cookies out of the oven I top each one with an andes mint and when it melts I spread it around on top.

Also thanks to flatlandcycle for more insight.

Is there a meet thread? Or can some one just list the meet times and locations?
TIA

Waivers with bib numbers are up! I'm in the 9200's, hope that puts me somewhere in the middle of the starting pack so I can have a good jump on the pace clock. :woohoo:

6902

Now to search for the breakpoints from previous years and ruminate on what it all means.

I just downloaded my waiver. I am running the relay and will be the first leg. My prior best 1/2 marathon time was 2:07 and I have number 70445. That is not a typo....:confused3. Can anyone else share their relay number or make any sense of this?

I think I will call rundisney tomorrow. Maybe they forgot to imput my race time into their computer.

There are three of us running the half and all our bib numbers start with
447xx . We posted no prior race times, so we'll be in that last corral.

I'm 22,690 for Goofy. I pulled up the waivers for everyone in my family running to see how the bib numbers looked since we have at least 2 people running in each race. The 1/2 bibs were all 5 digits, the lowest we have is in the 39,000's. The full are 4 digit, both by brother and SIL have bibs in the 7,000's. My other SIL who is running goofy with me has a bib in the 25,000's. I'm sure the relay has some block of numbers for them since they seem so high.

Any other Goofy runners concerned with having to reuse the bib for the full? I know what my bibs look like post race and I'm really nervous about how it will fair for an additional 26.2 miles the next day. Especially if it rains. I'm not looking forward to having to "baby" my bib during the 1/2. <sigh> Just one more thing to cut back on while the price continues to rise. Of course I will still pay it, Disney owns me! :rolleyes1

Also, what happens to Corral placement? Will the Goofy bibs have two different letters on them? I need to bring proof of time from W&D and get mine changed.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw we reuse the bibs. I know after princess this year my bib was a wreck. Throw aways also add more wear and tear to the bib. I'll be interested to see how it plays out. The corral placements are also an interesting predicament too since I always assumed they would be different for both races.
