OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

SO I started the COuch to 5K program and signed my BFF and I up for the Fun Run 5K in Disney to keep us motivated!

Anything I should know as a first timer? I've been holding off on making my resort reservations because I am waiting for a discount (wishful thinking?) - was thinking of the Beach Club.

Any tips for a newbie would be appreciated!!

Congratulations on starting! That's awesome.

A lot of people here have excellent knowledge of technical stuff, so my tips are more personal/motivational in nature.

#1 Don't give up. You will have a bad run. You will have a bad day. You will get sick. You may get an injury. At some point any or all of the disasters can happen. Don't allow that to defeat you. Just go out the next time and do what you can. Keep moving forward.

#2 Every run is a book with many chapters. Some chapters can be dark, scary, disheartening. Some chapters are thrilling, surprising, joyous. If you're in a dark chapter, keep turning pages and you'll come to a better one just around the corner. Another way I've heard this said is that everybody has to meet their dragon. When you get to yours, keep moving forward and you'll be past him before you know it.

#3 Find the joy. To quote the Brooks company, "Run Happy." Look at your workouts as a gift to yourself. Notice what's around you, and notice your body getting stronger.

#4 Tell EVERYONE. It keeps you accountable.

Have fun!!

Are you wearing two different pairs of shoes during goofy? I never thought about that, but it would make sense since I don't wear the same shoes for runs on back to back days...

I always do. My shoes for the half tend to have ~150 miles on them, and my shoes for the full have ~30. I'm not sure it's necessary to run on two different pairs unless it rains during the half, but I do it anyway.

My wife and I started the couch to 5k program around this time last year, and did the same thing of registering for the Disney 5k to hold us accountable. Having someone to train with helped a lot, there were days when one of us wouldn't feel motivated to run but the other one did - it forced us both to keep going. Neither one of us were really runners, but we found the couch 2 5k program great at easing us into it.

I'll warn you though, it's addicting. After the Disney 5k, we decided we wanted to keep running so we did a 1/2 marathon together this summer and I'm doing the Disney marathon as my first full in January.

Well, I officially registered today for the Goofy! I've been putting it off as I've been having foot/leg issues since April. Went to a sports doc and had an MRI in early May. Official diagnosis was heel bursitis. He gave me the okay to keep running once he ruled out there weren't any tears in my achilles. To make a long story short, I've did everything from massage to stretching to physical therapy to orthotics. I think it is well enough that I took the plunge today and registered.

I did the Wine and Dine last year as well as the WDW Half and am signed up for the Wine and Dine again this year. I'm following Jeff Galloway's training program for the Goofy but I'm probably going to add a 4th day of running/walking as I just feel better when I get a run in. I went almost 10 miles Saturday with no issues. Hooray!

Does anyone know if there is there a DIS meet scheduled for that weekend yet? Thanks!
:thumbsup2youve done it now:rotfl2:

re shoes, my dh and I were talking about this, another tip from seasoned old travellers, keep 1 pair in hand luggage and wear the other pair incase your case goes awol.

I was speaking of the Drinking Around the World in Epcot on Monday.

I imagine we'll do the same thing as last year. Start in Canada when they start selling beer, around 11:50 last year, and work our way around to Mexico.

I didn't know they hold off beer sales until later in the day. Not that I'm looking for a cold one at 9am, unless I just finished running 26 miles maybe :)

On that note, do they sell over priced adult beverages after the races at the finishing area/stands?

Have to agree with Frank. I didn't see any after the 5K, Donald or Mickey this past January

If you are slow enough(like me) during the marathon, you can pickup one on the way to the finish line in Epcot. They start selling them at 11:30. There is nothing outside of Epcot/Finish line.

I will be starting at Germany at 11:30 am on Monday :thumbsup2

Yep. Take your time.

Oh, and the nice man in Morocco will sell earlier than 11:30.

:thumbsup2

I did it! I signed up for the goofy challenge. I am sure physically I can do it and I have the attitude that I want to finish it. I am using Jeff Galloway's training for the goofy and am doing okay with it. I live in Southern Manitoba so I am a little concerned about the winter running, but I know I can do it. I am a bit concerned with the mental part of running, so any tips for the mental game would be great.

Has anyone called to see if the packages for hotel and DDP are out yet and what kind of discount they are? I called last week and nothing. The site says August, but figure it will happen before the site text is updated...

Been away for a couple days, it was my DW birthday on Saturday so I surprised her with a trip to Knoxville to visit our tablemates from our Alaskan cruise. They will also be our travelling companions for the marathon weekend, one will be my running partner for the half marathon. It was a good and fun weekend. Now back to training and the real world.

No backing out now, made it official and completed the registration for the half:cool1:

question - I have a vacation next week, and honestly would like to take the week off from running. I'm a new runner, having started in may, and I run 3 miles a day M-F and plan to start doing larger stretches in september. I'm doing the 1/2. would it be bad to take the week off? would it put me back at square one? this is my first time running ever and was a real couch potato so I'm a bit concerned. thoughts? thanks!

Your 5 day in a row running plan does not sound like any approved schedule I have read about. There are usually rest day(s) and cross training day(s) incorporated so injury is less likely to occur. You might want to research training schedules so you stay injury free. An example......

I agree with John re 5 days in a row, not sure I would totally stop, even just do a few 2 mile runs, I am sure you COULD stop for a week and I dont think it would put you back to square one but everybody is differant, personally my mental welfare would worry me more than my quads!
