OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Has anyone called to see if the packages for hotel and DDP are out yet and what kind of discount they are? I called last week and nothing. The site says August, but figure it will happen before the site text is updated...

I just called and asked about the Marathon Weekend Dining Plans. First - the dining plan for marathon weekend is only offered through Disney - not the travel company you are directed to for sporting event reservations (GET Travel). Secondly, you still MUST buy at least a one day park pass ($91 for one park one day pass for 2012) to be able to purchase the marathon weekend dining plan. And there is no discount on the dining plan. It is still $55 per person per night.

I was hoping you would be able to add the dining plan without park passes since I don't need them. I don't know what the difference is between marathon weekend dining plan packages and the regular magic your way packages with the dining plan. They said that it could possibly include a slight discount for the room, but compared to my room only charge, there was no additional room discount on the package price.

Please let me know if you find out anything different than I just did.

I have been thinking about Dining Plans recently also. I am confused about what WISH is doing and what I need to plan for.

I hear there is a WISH breakfast at Kona on Thursday morning, right? Is it too late to be a part of that gathering? If not, who to I talk to in order to make arrangements (or do I book my own reservation for Kona)?

Also, if there are 'tricks to the trade' as far as the best way to book dining and park tickets for the Marathon Weekend, that would be welcome information. I have my room at POP taken care of but the rest of it is still a work in progress.

Thanks in advance!

I was just looking on the runDisney website and wondering if there is any sort of after race party? I saw that they do the one post race party for the wine and dine and there is a pre race pasta party during marathon weekend. So...anyone know of anything post race for the half or the full?

Thanks in advance,
Bonnie

I am normally in the "you don't really need ADRs" camp when I go to Disney but one exception I always make is my pre-race meal. This year I had reservations at Portobello and still waited between 60 and 90 minutes for a seat. There was a 3 hour wait if you didn't have a reservation on Saturday evening. I would decide where you want to eat and make an ADR. If you are like me and do a pasta dinner the night before a run I recommend Portobello. It was the best Italian I've had on property and I grew up with family that was off the boat from Sicily.

As for the DDP, I am not a fan of it in general and don't use it so I can't help you with that.

question - I have a vacation next week, and honestly would like to take the week off from running. I'm a new runner, having started in may, and I run 3 miles a day M-F and plan to start doing larger stretches in september. I'm doing the 1/2. would it be bad to take the week off? would it put me back at square one? this is my first time running ever and was a real couch potato so I'm a bit concerned. thoughts? thanks!

It wouldn't take you back to square 1 but it would be a setback I think. One of the things I love about vacation is running somewhere new. A lot of my vacations are around events but if I go out of town for something else I take my running stuff and try to get in at least one run. You can scale it back and even go a little easier but I would at least try to get in a run or two.

That is sad news about the park tickets. When I called they also said there was ZERO room discount? Did you at least get a room only discount? We have AP's so we do not need the tickets and are hoping for an AP rate, but arriving on the 31st it is a long shot.

Thanks!

I know a bunch of us will be Drinking Around the World at Epcot on Monday. As for Sunday, I'll be at Raglan Road rehydrating and carb reloading with some Guinness before heading up the hill for some tapas and tequila. The more, the merrier. :)

I may be in the minority.......taking one week off will not set you back to square one. You will not lose all your fitness. I have taken as much as a month off after races and been able to come back into training---not at 100%, of course, but pretty good. And mentally, it can be refreshing.

That said, I STRONGLY second you getting a bona fide 1/2 marathon training plan. You need to build mileage gradually and take rest days in order to let your body build fitness in a way that won't incur injury. There are tons of plans out there.

Good luck with your training and have fun on vacation.

Last year the room only discounts weren't announced until later in the fall. I was able to book, in mid October, 40% off of the boardwalk when I arranged the marathon weekend. I am hoping that this year is similar, as I haven't booked anything yet. I think it's too soon.

to all concerned about my plan, please don't be. I'm starting an official plan after my vacation. this was just a start of the couch to 5k I did and then continuing the last day of it until after this vacation.

Just finished my first Half of this year (the Providence RnR Half) and have one more half to do in October, and then my first FULL at the end of October. Then we just keep on track for Goofy in Jan.

We are now considering doing the Tinkerbell Half at the end of Jan in Cali so we can get the Coast to Coast medal, but Im worried that two halfs and a full in one month might be too much.

I think we already have plans to do Epcot that Monday after race weekend, maybe we can meet up with some of ya'll

The second half at the end of the month shouldn't be too much trouble at all. You'll already have your fitness base built up for Goofy, so with some good training runs after you recover from it, knocking down another half will be easy.

Congrats for doin' it in the rain!!!

So I am looking to participate in the Marathon Relay in January at Walt Disney World. However, I need a partner!! Anyone interested? I would like to find someone in Orlando, FL so we can meet and figure out the registrations. Also I would prefer to run the first half of the relay! I think I will try to do the Donald 1/2 on Saturday and the Chip n Dale relay on Sunday!! Let me know if you or anyone you know would be interested!!!

I am holding out too... was going to rent DVC, but waited too long for anything but a SSR studio...

Hoping for good rates too! :goodvibes

What is your pace? I'd consider.....but not sure if I'm doing the half instead.

Well I ran my first 2 1/2 marathons earlier this year and I finished them both in about 3 hours. This year I am thinking I may try and do both the Donald and the Relay!

Is anyone else struggling with increased appetite as you increase mileage? I feel like I'm hungry ALL of the time right now. This will be a 40 mile week for me. This didn't happen to me during marathon training last year (I lost weight that I've kept off). I'm really frustrated by it.
