Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

I will stick with it! Thanks for your words of encouragement. And... I did finish the 10k :woohoo: I will post how it went next.

Thanks so much for all the insight!

I have been using KT tape over the last couple days and when looking at the options for wrapping the ankle area... there is a wrap designed for peroneal tendonitis. I wonder if that isn't exactly what is going on...

I ran today without the superfeet.... it wasn't painless for sure, but I made it through. :goodvibes

Peroneal tendonitis can cause pain in the bottom outside of the foot, and the back of the ankle (also on the outside). It is more of a supinator injury, meaning that something was pushing you too much on the outside of your foot. I had this before, last fall. I was running in the lunaracer 2 for a while, when nike re-released the original lunaracer, I noticed that it had me too much on the outside of my foot. I ran in them anyway, and injury followed.

I had luck with the elliptical, then the treadmill. It bothered me more pushing off then landing, and I do not think you push off as hard on a mill as you do the road. I was probably off the streets for about 3 weeks.

Good job on the 10K. This is a painful injury to run through. You held your own very well.

For those that have run RunDisney races in the past are the race jackets they sell at the expo always in Womens only. I was at Tink this year and they only have womens but i shruged it off since the majority of the runners were women but know I see the Marathon weekend jackets on Disneystore.com and they are all Womens sizes. i was realy looking forward to getting a race jacket for ToT. I dont think I would fit in a Womens XL. Well if anyone can shed light on the subject please do otherwise I will wait and hope they have a ToT jacket in Mens size.

Tink and Princess sell only womens stuff because they are advertised as women's events...men can participate, but not win, etc. since ToT is not that type of race, it will hopefully have both. That was the case at the DL half and the Expedition Everest Challenge. They may or may not have a jacket though...when I did the Expedition Everest, there was very limited merchandise available for sale...I'm sure because it was a smaller race. I'm not sure what they'll do for the ToT. I would expect them to have more than EE did, but probably less than what they sell at the half or full events.

Just finished my 9 miles also. Kinda struggled with sore, tired legs the whole time (i should have skipped my weight lifting class at the gym yesterday). First half seemed to go fairly quickly, though I started to have some tummy trouble. I found a porta potty just in the nick of time around mile 4. First time I've ever said a prayer of thanks for a nasty Porta potty! :lmao: Did okay until miles 8 and 9 when I just felt sick and a little lightheaded and was even shivering. :confused3 I dunno. Ended up walking the last quarter mile. But I finished it, so I guess that's what matters, right? Average pace 12:08. Then I spent an hour in the bathroom afterward. TMI?

That does not sound like much fun! That is an awesome time though! And considering the tummy issues, I have to say :worship: I hope you are feeling better...

Haven't been on here in a little while - I am still training - even after my injury - been doing straight-up Galloway and it is working great for me :)

Tomorrow I have a 10K- I am not looking for a PR, or even for a time to submit for TOT (I already submitted my 10K from the Turkey Trot last year which was 1:06.30) I'm just looking to get out there again and have a good time!!

I haven't raced since the Princess  because of getting injured I had to cancel 2 10K's earlier this summer. So I am a little nervous but excited just the same :woohoo: Picking up my packet yesterday, I was thinking, wow, the next time I do this I will be in DISNEY!!!! :yay:

Hope you have a good time in your 10k! I was surprised at how fun mine actually was (despite my injury) And since you have a great time to submit already you can really just enjoy the run. Let us know how it goes!

Great job! Considering the issues you've been having and the pain you're experiencing, a 12:27/m is great....it's a great time without those issues, so kudos to you! I'd definitely submit it, it can't hurt. And if you happen to do another one and get a better time, I'm sure you can resubmit at packet pick up. Kick back and enjoy your next few days of rest!

Thank you, I am actually happy about the time..for the most part. I wish I could have come in just a little quicker..but yes, given what I was experiencing I am happy. I was feeling kinda odd about finishing almost last. (I did take a better look at the times and the very last was far enough behind me that I just must not have seen her, so 2 people were actually on the course behind me) I then looked at the total number of people who ran the 10k (208) The first 33 had average miles of under 6min/mile. The next 54 finishers under an 8min/mile average. It isn't until the 165 person crossed that the average is over 10 minutes per mile and then it is just barely. It is only the last 5 of us that hit over 12 min/mile average. Is that normally what is seen for a 10k?

Ok, so how do I submit it? I am sorry if that is a silly/stupid question. The time is posted on the races website, but am I suppose to get some physical item?

Great Job! 12:27 is deff a good time even without injury, especially for someone who is newer to the sport! Yes, I would submit it! With the injury take a few days off, even if you're scheduled to run. You won't lose any fitness taking some time off, I just came back from a chest injury 2 weeks ago and am actually faster than I was before the injury. So take it easy for a few days, try to heal up. Congrats again!

Thanks so much. I plan to take it fairly easy today and stay off my feet. (like I have much choice, I can barely walk again ) I won't run monday, but I have work..and work involves a lot of walking and being on my feet.

YOU ROCK!!! :woohoo: That is an awesome time!!!! I'm so happy for you!!! Now, take it easy so you don't get injured any further!!

And I know what you mean about feeling alone out there- that is usually how I am for our local races. Wait until TOT, you will NEVER feel alone during a Disney race, there are always people around!! :thumbsup2

Thank you so much. I will be trying to take it as easy as possible this week. I am surprised that despite my pain, I am anxious to get out and "improve" I wont though...I know I need to stay off my ankle for at least a bit.

I wonder if all areas have such awesome runners? As I mentioned above a good majority of the runners in the 10k I did yesterday were fast... meaning that I probably will be running alone a lot at any local race. Good to know that at Disney...that wont be the case. :goodvibes

I feel weird posting 3 times in a row, but I am still getting used to this whole forum thing, I'm sure i'll get it eventually. Anyway, I figured I would post about my run today! Went for a 10 miler today, felt really good but had to slow down for a train at about 3.5 miles in. I am still about :30 seconds from my goal time, but I was able to finish it in 1:32:30, which so far is my best time (for that distance) of the year...well actually ever.

So for those of you that don't think things like that are possible, my first marathon (the 2011 Disney Marathon) it took me 6 hours (13:45/mile). All my half marathons were around 2:30 (a little under 11:30/mile) I am not running 5K's at under 9 min per mile and just did a 10 miler in 9:30. So just remember, it's possible!! These boards just provide one more means of motivation for all of us there. So keep it up!

:worship: You are awesome! That is an amazing time! It is great to know that you have seen steady progress in your times. It is definitely encouraging :goodvibes

This is exactly where the pain is. So... does this mean my stability shoes are not right for me? :headache: I really don't want to have to return yet another pair of shoes. I feel like I am becoming a crazy shoe returning lady.

I had a BLAST at my 10K this morning- the UPMC Hamot 10K in Erie, PA :thumbsup2

Finished with an official chip time of 1:11.05

Not a PR for sure, but still, much better than I thought I would do!! I haven't run a race since the Princess so it felt so good to get back out there!! And this is my first race since getting injured earlier this summer!!

Before this race I was really scared and anxious, unsure if I could actually do the TOT- after this morning, I am PUMPED and READY and I know I'm gonna ROCK IT!!! I felt like a rockstar this morning!! (Maybe cause I was wearing my SparkleSkirt? I don't know)

Funny thing, my mom likes to come to my races and hang out to cheer me on :goodvibes She just walks around the area and chills out. Right now, she is the one taking a nap :lmao: I'm all pumped and jazzed and I really want to go to Walmart, but mama is fast asleep!! LOL I will have to tease her later cause she didn't even run in the race LOL!!

:cool1: What an awesome job!

Funny about your mom. My dh was the same way... super tapped all day. Course, I was pretty tapped too... not as pumped up as you. I am still pretty tapped. Well, more like... can't walk.. but still.

Congrats on getting back out there!!!

:

Im not exactly sure what the cut off date is to submit proof of time prior to the race...if you're still in that window, you just have to send an email stating what race you ran and your time. I have also included a link to the online results of that race. Within a week or two, I was emailed back confirming my time was accepted and what my new expected finish time was. If the date for online submission has already passed, you can bring your proof to packet pick up. Make a print out of your race results and bring that. I would also make note of the website too on that sheet in case someone wants to confirm. You can send a quick email to rundisney and they'll be able to let you know if the online submission date has passed or not.

Actually, forget my last post...I just saw on the website that August 1 was the deadline, so you're going to have to bring your proof to the runner relations booth at the packet pick up/expo to have your corral changed there. So just bring them a print out of the races' results and the results website and you should be all set.

I hope that is not your leg in that picture.

Anyway, I would just avoid a shoe that you feel is pushing your foot out too much. Could be too much stability, or too much arch support. You mentioned that you had the Elixir 7, that shoe is probably okay (without arch supports). I tried the 6's before and they were nice, just too much heel to toe drop for my liking.

If you have compression socks, they may help. Roll your foot with a tennis ball, to keep loose. Another thing I like to do is lay on the ground with my butt up against a wall, with my legs and feet going up the wall. This will "drain" the blood out of the area. When you get up, there will be a rush of new blood to the area. This also helps stretch out the back of the legs too.

Good luck.

:rotfl2: Uhhhh... no. :rotfl: I try to stay a bit more groomed than that. ;)

I am hoping that the shoes are not the problem. I hate to take them back. I did run yesterday without the supperfeet inserts... but hurting more today than before the run yesterday makes me think the shoes still may be trouble for me.

I will try the wall trick... can't hurt. I also put on my old running shoes(that I wear around to walk in now) and it is a bit more comfortable to walk in them than without any shoes...so maybe this all will help.

You are right on just bringing it to your results to the race. I did that with the first Wine and Dine half marathon, it was really simple. You just bring your proof of time with you (print out of the race results works fine). They'll just slap a sticker on your bib to replace the corral!

Thats what i figured when i was there and was hopping maybe come Tot or W&D would have jackets for men. But know that I say the jackets for marathon weekend being sold on Disnystore.com I am concerned they will only have womens sizes. Since I saw Stitch on the logo I have been hopeful for a nice jacket to go along with my DW and DM's Tink jacket.

:wizard:

Dh and I did a 9mile training run this weekend. Our longest and actually our best yet! I was feeling some pain on my right side, kinda shooting up towards my butt. Dh, for the 1st time, was running like he had springs on his feet! I am usually the 'leader' but he really pulled through for this one!
We finished in 1:46. I was soooo excited! I just was not feeling good at all and just wanted to it to be over!
Looks like my goal to complete this race in 2 hours might be within reach!

I did not get out this weekend, resting a very slight injury to my leg, rather rest and take a week off than push to improve my time. I would rather run injury free and and a slightly slower time than have a chance of injuring it. I also may have gotten my costume, but looking at feasibility as it is long and may inhibit running. But will look amazing if possible.

So as I mentioned above, I did go forward with my 10k. I was still limping along as I walked up to the start. I hung way back... like back behind the strollers for the 5k (there was a 5k going at the same time... and we all ran together for a portion of the course) I finished with only one person on the course behind me... but I finished. I suspect the person I was "chasing" had actually started a minute before me since I did actually finish ahead of 2 people. How crazy is that? I was the second to the last person to cross the finish line? :rotfl2: My chip time 1:17:10.6 giving me a pace of 12:27/m

Given that this was at a higher elevation by about 1000 feet (yes, my lungs burned a bit at the start..but acclimated very quickly), it was hotter by about 10 degrees than I normally run AND I have been limping for the last couple days I am pretty happy with this time. Is it good enough to submit for the ToT 10 miler?

It was a bit odd to be one of the only ones left on the course. As I said, I hung back...the very back at the start. I was passing people... keeping a good pace with others... and overall feeling pretty solid in how I was doing compared to the other race participants. THEN there was the split in the course... :rotfl2: and all but me when a different direction. Then I was alone.

There is another 10k in about a month that I could register for to get a better time... but I am unsure if I should. I wish my partner was doing her 10k sooner so I could judge from that. Right now I think she isn't yet under a 14/mile pace...but she has a month to her 10k (which is on the same day as the one I would try for a better time with.)

Anyway... hurting bad (yes, limping along more severely again) so probably will not be walking much over the next couple days...so SUPER excited to not run till tuesday.

:worship: That is a great time especially with your foot pain. I probably would have spent the weekend laying on my couch if I had the type of pain you have been describing.

Hope you are feeling better after a day of rest:thumbsup2

I think I may be with you on the taking a week off. Sounds like a wise plan. I have only taken one week off when we went on a trip since I started to train... but I worry about doing more damage to my injury. Here is to both of us healing quickly so that we can get out and run again! :thumbsup2

I am going to head to the doc today. I still am limping quite a bit. And thank you regarding the comment on my time. I have been looking at other 10ks to see if I could do one before the ToT in order to submit a better time... I just feel like I could have done a bit better had I not been hopping along so much. Course, not sure I would have done any better in my placement... I am just in awe of the results of races over here. I have never really looked at results before. So many people finish in under 10m/mile paces. In the one I did on sat... about a 1/3 had times less than a 6m/mile pace. Obviously I have a lot more training to do. I thought finishing at 12m/mile pace would be good. I just am shocked that is almost dead last...and thus soo slow compared to the other runners. Who knows though.. maybe no amount of training will ever make me a "fast" runner. I am just proud to finish.. and finish upright. ;)

:thumbsup2

I hope you are feeling better.. but even though you were not feeling great and you were not having the best time of it... I think you did an awesome job! 9 miles? 1:46? :worship:
Hee Hee, 1 hour 46 mins of course!

Good luck at the Dr! I think your pace is great! Much faster than I trained for, and completed!, the Princess 1/2. My mom and I were only about a 13.30 min mile and we finished with much time to spare. We were in the 2nd last corral so we did have a one corral cushion.
You will find anything locally you do over a 5k will be the fast/experienced runners. 5ks you get a mix but a good lot of people walking for charity and such. Disney races are a good mix of both!

Thanks, I am sure I will be posting here later today to say how it went at the docs

So with that pace, did you feel rushed? The way I have started looking at things is.. if the pace is 14min mile... that allows for 2 minutes each mile to stop for characters or potty breaks..or whatever else we may need to stop for.

That explains a lot about the race. It was so darn funny to me. I was running along side so many people... keeping pace... passing... but not really getting passed all that much. There were a ton of us on the course. Then the course split and I was the ONLY one to go in the one direction. It was funny... it was like "ah, there go all my friends" :rotfl2: I guess I just wasn't expecting the lot of people to be so experienced. Or to push themselves so hard. Dh said people came through puking, needing medical attention... etc. I was tired... don't get me wrong. I wasn't overly exerted though. (just limping. :rotfl:) Even dh agrees that I didn't come through looking like I about killed myself. Others though... they really really pushed.

Good morning and WOOOO HOOOO on all of the great runs you guys have been putting in the past few days!!!:yay::woohoo::cheer2: I started quoting everyone, then lost my quotes, then ran out of time, but I read every post since Fri. and i'm super excited for you all :thumbsup2

I'm happy to report that I did it: my first 10-miler! Okay, technically, iSmoothRun says I did 9.95, but Runkeeper says 10.1, so I think it's a wash and I'm calling it 10. Especially since I ran the last mile in horrific conditions - thunderstorms moved in with 40mph wind, torrential rain, way-too-close lightning and ankle-deep water covering my path. Yes, I ran the last mile in that; there was NO WAY I was quitting before 10 miles, lol! Managed an average pace of 13:20... my final mile was my fastest split. Go figure. ;)

That's the good news - that I finished. The bad news is that IT Band issues struck yet again, at the same stupid 7-mile mark. It started with some knee pain at the end of my 2:00 run intervals, went away during the 1:00 walks; by mile 9, I could only get through :45 running before the pain hit. This. Must. Stop.
