Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

I did wonder about PF... since I had read often people are able to run...but then it hurts after. This seemed to be the case with me. However... when I say the heel/ankle... it is really not the bottom of my foot at all. It is also not the Achilles. It is the outside on both feet, just behind the ankle bone...between it and the heel. If I walk on my heels... no pain. If I walk on the balls of my feet.. no pain. If I walk, but purposely over pronate and roll on the insides of my feet... barely pain. If I walk how I would normally walk and roll a bit to the outside... OUCH! If while sitting, I flex my feet I can reproduce the pain along the outside of my entire foot. Does any of this make sense? :confused3

hmmm, well that does sound like a different type of pain than what I'm experiencing. I wonder if it could be a tiny stress fracture in your ankle? The best suggestion is going to be a doctor visit, unfortunately. I'd definitely get it looked at, probably x-rayed. Whatever you do, just don't let it go on too long and get worse before you get it treated!

agreed :thumbsup2 I see a visit to my doc in my future. As much as I love my doc though... probably will end up leaving with a referral for a sports medicine doc. And with the way specialists are here... I bet I won't get in for months. We will see though... I hope I am wrong. I suspect that I will be dealing with this for a while...so I best just get used to it. ;)

You stated in another post: Never having used stability shoes before, maybe that is the issue? I have ran in 3 different shoes this month... minimalist... then high stability... then moderate stability. Changed from #1 - over pronation. Changed from #2 - knee pain

I am confused by this. Did you have an injury in the minimalist shoe? What were the shoes (all three, if you don't mind me asking)?

I would consider going back to a minimal or semi-minimal shoe if you were fine. I think people make too much out of over pronation. I think stability shoes may be part of your problem. You would not be the first person I knew who got knee pain after switching to a stability shoe. Your current foot injury sounds to me like your foot is being forced to much to the outside.

I needed a new shoe since my old ones were showing quite a bit of wear on the tread. The edema was also just starting. I thought maybe it was caused by the shoes wearing out. (now I realize it was the fact I went off my medication) I liked the look of the sketchers go runs. I also liked how light they were. (my ones I was replacing were pretty light weight) Running in those, the edema worsened (still off the medication) I went in to be properly fitted and I was told I over pronate. I think the edema was causing a much more severe over pronation. I was placed in an asics GT2170 with blue super feet insole. Not feeling like those were working, I was then placed in a mizuno wave elixir 7.

I think you may be right about it possibly forcing me too much to the outside. I decided to wear my old shoes today (just walking..no running) My feet are feeling much better. I almost wonder if I shouldn't run in them tomorrow...but.. they really have little tread left in them..so doubt that would be a good idea either. I think I am just going to take the super feet out...and run with the mizunos...

Do other people have this much trouble with getting the right shoe? This can't be right... I went March to July with no troubles. Course the longest run was in the 4 mile range.. not 5 + and the heat has been worse. Add in the medication changes...so maybe all this is just a recipe for failure?

Thank you all so much for all your wonderful support!!!

Sorry you're having so much trouble! When I first started running a little over 2 years ago, I was put in the Asics Cumulus (a really chushy neutral that I have NEVER had any "break in" time in), and luckily it was love at first lace-up. I still run in those and have lost count of how many pairs I've purchased since...I always rotate 2 pair at any given time between short and long runs...they have a whole "graduation" schedule even. :) Just keep at it...you'll find the right pair for you eventually, and it'll be worth all the time (and $$!) you've spent because it's probably the most important thing to have for this activity!

Be sure to let us know how the 10k turned out if you decide to do it!

Unfortunately there is some trial and error to finding the right shoe. The paradigm that the shoe stores use is useless at best, severely flawed at worst. I wish I had a dollar for everyone who went to a store, told they overpronate, bought stability shoes and inserts, and were injured soon after.

The Elixir without the supports may be good to try. That shoe (without inserts) has fairly mild stability. The Asics 2170 with superfeet sounds like overkill.

By the way, pronation is natural. We all need to do it. When we talk about over pronation - well, what is "over" pronation?

For your foot, try rolling it on a tennis ball (some like using a golf ball). That will help loosen things up. Think "foam roller" for your feet. This has helped me in the past.

One last thing - try to strengthen your feet and legs. This is the best way I have found to prevent and recover from injuries. Think hips/glutes to toes. Upper body (especially core) wont hurt either.

Given you were doing ok in light weight worn out shoes, I kind of think you would do well in a lighter neutral shoe. However, I am trying to share thoughts over the internet, so take it for what is worth.

Good luck.

I just finished my 9 miles. Pace was 16:10. Sooooooo close! I got much faster the last 4 miles but the first few were slowwwww. And I wasn't even all that tired until about 8.5 so I guess I held back too much on the front end of it.

Haven't been on here in a little while - I am still training - even after my injury - been doing straight-up Galloway and it is working great for me :)

Tomorrow I have a 10K- I am not looking for a PR, or even for a time to submit for TOT (I already submitted my 10K from the Turkey Trot last year which was 1:06.30) I'm just looking to get out there again and have a good time!!

I haven't raced since the Princess  because of getting injured I had to cancel 2 10K's earlier this summer. So I am a little nervous but excited just the same :woohoo: Picking up my packet yesterday, I was thinking, wow, the next time I do this I will be in DISNEY!!!! :yay:

Just finished my 9 miles also. Kinda struggled with sore, tired legs the whole time (i should have skipped my weight lifting class at the gym yesterday). First half seemed to go fairly quickly, though I started to have some tummy trouble. I found a porta potty just in the nick of time around mile 4. First time I've ever said a prayer of thanks for a nasty Porta potty! :lmao: Did okay until miles 8 and 9 when I just felt sick and a little lightheaded and was even shivering. :confused3 I dunno. Ended up walking the last quarter mile. But I finished it, so I guess that's what matters, right? Average pace 12:08. Then I spent an hour in the bathroom afterward. TMI?

I will stick with it! Thanks for your words of encouragement. And... I did finish the 10k :woohoo: I will post how it went next.

Thanks so much for all the insight!

I have been using KT tape over the last couple days and when looking at the options for wrapping the ankle area... there is a wrap designed for peroneal tendonitis. I wonder if that isn't exactly what is going on...

I ran today without the superfeet.... it wasn't painless for sure, but I made it through. :goodvibes

So as I mentioned above, I did go forward with my 10k. I was still limping along as I walked up to the start. I hung way back... like back behind the strollers for the 5k (there was a 5k going at the same time... and we all ran together for a portion of the course) I finished with only one person on the course behind me... but I finished. I suspect the person I was "chasing" had actually started a minute before me since I did actually finish ahead of 2 people. How crazy is that? I was the second to the last person to cross the finish line? :rotfl2: My chip time 1:17:10.6 giving me a pace of 12:27/m

Given that this was at a higher elevation by about 1000 feet (yes, my lungs burned a bit at the start..but acclimated very quickly), it was hotter by about 10 degrees than I normally run AND I have been limping for the last couple days I am pretty happy with this time. Is it good enough to submit for the ToT 10 miler?

It was a bit odd to be one of the only ones left on the course. As I said, I hung back...the very back at the start. I was passing people... keeping a good pace with others... and overall feeling pretty solid in how I was doing compared to the other race participants. THEN there was the split in the course... :rotfl2: and all but me when a different direction. Then I was alone.

There is another 10k in about a month that I could register for to get a better time... but I am unsure if I should. I wish my partner was doing her 10k sooner so I could judge from that. Right now I think she isn't yet under a 14/mile pace...but she has a month to her 10k (which is on the same day as the one I would try for a better time with.)

Anyway... hurting bad (yes, limping along more severely again) so probably will not be walking much over the next couple days...so SUPER excited to not run till tuesday.

Great job! Considering the issues you've been having and the pain you're experiencing, a 12:27/m is great....it's a great time without those issues, so kudos to you! I'd definitely submit it, it can't hurt. And if you happen to do another one and get a better time, I'm sure you can resubmit at packet pick up. Kick back and enjoy your next few days of rest!

Nausea, light headed ness and shivering are all signs of heat exhaustion, which can lead to heat stroke! Please be careful out there! Recognize those signs and slow down and hydrate if you start to see them again for sure. Good job for getting in 9 miles on sore legs. My trainer has always insisted on a rest day the day before a long run....no running, cross training or anything. And, when I'm within a month of say a half marathon, I cut way down on the cross training to save my energy for the runs. It's part of the theory of tapering too, so that on race day your body is just itching to GO GO GO!

I just looked up the Devil's Chase 6.66 miler. I asked DH if he would be willing to drive the 3 hours to watch me run it and he said not only would he drive there he would run it with me:thumbsup2 Only problem is that he hasn't run in years. He was in the Marine Corps 2000-2004 and assumes he can just jump back into it at any time.:confused3

He told me to sign him up and when I made sure he knew he was going to sign up for an almost 7 mile run he said "Please, I can run it backwards" I have to say that I am really looking foward to running right by him race day and waiting for him at the finish line:laughing: (although I will feel slightly bummed if he really does fly though it like he thinks he will, he has a much better ability to run through pain and heat than I do)

Great Job! 12:27 is deff a good time even without injury, especially for someone who is newer to the sport! Yes, I would submit it! With the injury take a few days off, even if you're scheduled to run. You won't lose any fitness taking some time off, I just came back from a chest injury 2 weeks ago and am actually faster than I was before the injury. So take it easy for a few days, try to heal up. Congrats again!

Some people can not train and all and just have that type of ability. Don't get too bummed if it happens. Use it as motivation to keep going though! Even if he does beat you this time...if you keep up with the running you'll beat him eventually if he doesn't! Good luck though and I hope you are able to run right by him and laugh at him at the finish line!!

YOU ROCK!!! :woohoo: That is an awesome time!!!! I'm so happy for you!!! Now, take it easy so you don't get injured any further!!

And I know what you mean about feeling alone out there- that is usually how I am for our local races. Wait until TOT, you will NEVER feel alone during a Disney race, there are always people around!! :thumbsup2

I feel weird posting 3 times in a row, but I am still getting used to this whole forum thing, I'm sure i'll get it eventually. Anyway, I figured I would post about my run today! Went for a 10 miler today, felt really good but had to slow down for a train at about 3.5 miles in. I am still about :30 seconds from my goal time, but I was able to finish it in 1:32:30, which so far is my best time (for that distance) of the year...well actually ever.

So for those of you that don't think things like that are possible, my first marathon (the 2011 Disney Marathon) it took me 6 hours (13:45/mile). All my half marathons were around 2:30 (a little under 11:30/mile) I am not running 5K's at under 9 min per mile and just did a 10 miler in 9:30. So just remember, it's possible!! These boards just provide one more means of motivation for all of us there. So keep it up!
