Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

We are getting so close! I did my longest training run ever last night... 8 miles in an hour and 53mins. I am concerned about running the 10 because 8 was a struggle. Any tips? Everyone says I will be so motivated at the race that I will forget the other 2 miles but boy do they seem daunting.

I really believe in the atmosphere and excitement of race day pushing you through what you thought were your limits! The only warning I'd give you about that though is to recognize it and reign it in! Meaning: don't fly out of the gate like a race horse and burn off all that extra adrenaline in the first few miles...it'll make the back half of the run miserable! It's a hard thing to do, I know, but just keep it in your mind to really watch your pace at the beginning of the race when you're super excited, get settled into a comfortable groove and if you're feelin' it half way through, turn it up a bit if you want. Just save a little in the tank for the last couple of miles so you can really enjoy the finish. Somehow, in that last half mile I always feel like I'm floating! Don't forget to smile big and throw up a big "I did it!" fist pump for the finish line pic! :cool1:

Wise wise wise advice.
Especially with this being a night race. There won't be much spectator cheering during the race, which can be a boon of a psychological boost.

Still looking for a fun costume.

I agree with this completely and can speak from experience on this advice. When I signed up for my first ever Disney Marathon, I trained went through the steps and upon the start of the race...went through the first 16 miles in 3 hours (which for me at the time was pretty good). However, once that adreneline wore off, it took me forever (really another 3 hours) to make it through the last 10 miles.

I haven't seen anywhere, but if they have pacers, you can stick with your pacer, or make a new friend and run with them! Last year I ended up talking with a guy the entire 26.2 miles of the marathon because we wanted to finish the race in the same goal time.

Usually the last part of the race is all mental...most marathon training programs have you go no more than 20 miles, because the last 6.2 is just mental. If you can go 20, you can go 26.2. I feel the same way about this, if you can go 8 or 8.5, you can go 10! Plus we still have time before you need to start to taper, in the next two weeks if you can get up to 9, you can do 10 at this point you just gotta say...what's another two miles now?

Is there anyone here who will be starting in the last group? I've been fine in previous 5ks because I managed to start ahead of a lot of folks but for this run I don't have a 10k time to submit for better-than-last corrall placement.

I'm getting nervous about the sweepers. I felt this same way before both of my previous Disney 5ks and didn't have a problem. I've been training and just maintain a 16 min/mi pace for 7 miles.

:thumbsup2

Last night was my 4th or 5ht run in my new Newtons and I'm happy to report they just keep getting better! I'm up to just under 3 miles at a time in them. My feet and ankles are definitely still adjusting to them and it's hard to imagine going a long distance in them yet, but it's crazy to finish a run with NO PAIN - no shin pain, no knee pain, no calf pain, nothing. My calves and feet just feel worked, if that makes, sense, but not painfully so. I can't decide whether to do a few miles of my long run this weekend in them or do the whole thing in my other shoes...

First, I love my Newtons!!!

Second, I believe you are ready to ditch the old shoes and solely run the Newtons. I built up to only two miles before making the switch and I never looked back! http://www.wdwinfo.com/images/smilies/cool1.gif

Thanks for that! It's tempting, and if it were a shorter long run I'd be all over it, but I'm looking at 10 miles on a previously badly injured Achilles; I have to be very, very careful with that baby. I may start with the Newtons and see how I feel after a few miles.

I WILL have a better run than I did on tuesday...I WILL have a better run than I did on tuesday (it's 97 degrees out)...I WILL have a better run than I did on tuesday ("feels like" 103)...I WILL have a better run than I did on tuesday...(55% humidity)...I WILL have a better tun than I did on tuesday...(I really need to get my co-worker to turn off the news/weather on her TV!)...I WILL have a better run than I did on tuesday...WISH me luck! pixiedust:

I'm sure that I will be in that last group. Every time I do a long race (my last was the Disneyland Half in 2011) I get nervous that I'll get swept. I even told one of the sweepers who was standing by their bike, stopwatch in hand, to stay right where they were as I ran by her in CA! That being said, I have never even come close to being swept, and in fact, had my best time ever at Disneyland (about 3:15.) My first half I finished at 3:25. I think you'll be just fine!

You can do it!!! You're siggy pics are my inspiration so I know you can!! Woohoo!!

Yeah, my first "long" run was around 6.5 and with no prior issues. Always better to be safe than injured.

Aw, what a nice thing to say! It's been quite the whirlwind doing all those races, especially never thinking in a million years I could do one, but then to get 'hooked' after the first? Crazy talk!!

I'm happy to say I was a smidge over 5 minutes faster today than I was on Tuesday. I was almost disappointed in that for like a half second but thought about how I really felt a lot better out there today than I did the other day and in these weather conditions, I feel like that's really the most important, so I'm satisfied and looking forward to a couple days rest before a 6 miler on Sunday....hopefully snake-free. I'm still fairly apprehensive about that. :(

So I was talking to a friend of mine tonight about races and how I have major race anxiety and how I get a mental block thinking I can't do as much as I can really do. I was telling him how for the second time I ran a mile with no walk breaks today and why can't I do that in an actual race. His thoughts were if I can do a mile in training I should be able to do 3 miles in a 5k without stopping. I have one coming up on Sunday so maybe I should just run as far as I possibly can and see what that is. Maybe that will get rid of my race anxiety. And if I can do that, surely I can outrun the sweepers.

Please wish me some luck. I fear I will need it. Saturday is my 10k that I am running to get a time to submit. I ran today (for the second time) in my new shoes (the mizunos) darn it anyway... my ankle/heel hurts sooo bad that I had to stay off it all day (couldn't walk across the room without horrible pain) I managed to do my entire 5 miles I had planned today... but when I hit the 5 mile mark I was still about a quarter mile from my house. I decided to just walk... and I about crawled. I almost... ALMOST called home to have someone get me. It took me 10 minutes to walk home. :faint: At least I made the 5 miles in about 58 minutes or I would have been seriously discouraged.

Be honest... does this not bode well for saturday? I guess worst case is I can't do it... and I have to heal a bit and try for a different 10k before the ToT 10miler. Got some KT tape... that seems to have helped a bit..

It takes a while to break in a new pair of shoes, and if you run for a long or far time in them, they can certainly get your feet killing (same goes for the opposite on old shoes). But making it 5 miles is certainly good news, just don't get discouraged and keep it up. From the sounds of it you'll have your new shoes broken in by the time the Disney race comes.

As for Saturday...I think it's going to depend on how your feet feel. I think it also depends on how many corrals there will be. Just get out there and give it your all. I did the wine and dine the first year they had it, there were 4 corrals, I did a half marathon before it for placement and did like 11 minute miles and was put in Corral B. I wouldn't worry too much about your corral placement and just concentrate on the race and making sure you don't hurt too much. The most important thing is to just get the race in for the experience and to make sure you can do it. Good luck, although it sounds like from the amount you train, you won't need it. Just take it easy enough that you're still good for the ToT!

The bold part, exactly! :thumbsup2 Way to get it done... even better to get it done and not feel like death at the end! :woohoo: Wishing you a snake-free weekend!

Honestly? I find the fact that you had so much residual pain concerning - my standard protocol is that if anything continues to hurt at a level of 7 or more hours after a run, it's an injury and needs to be looked at/ rested. Breaking in new shoes should not cause that kind of pain. I think you'll really have to assess whether doing the 10K with the intention of getting a good time could result in greater injury - a hard call, I know. Maybe go into it with the idea that you'll see how it feels and be willing to call it a day if the pain gets worse?

Just a thought, and I apologize because I can't remember if you've already stated if you know what's going on with your heel and ankle, but I've recently started dealing with PF and it hurts pretty bad in my heel too. And I'm finding that after my runs, when it hurts the most, I end up walking weird for a day or two...which is now starting to affect my ankle...I've noticed it gets pretty sore a few times lately. Maybe that's what's ailing you? I finally got the referral to a podiatrist this week from my doctor...stress fracture was ruled out, thank goodness. Anyway, like I said, I'm sorry if you've already mentioned that you have a diagnosis...but in case you don't, just thought I'd throw that out there. I hope it starts to feel better soon...definitely take it easy this weekend on your 10k if it starts to hurt...it's not worth making it worse!

I can relate to everyone breaking new shoes in~ I finally got properly fit for my first pair of real running shoes the right way after a few years of thinking I was getting the proper shoes. I love them but will take some time getting used to them and breaking them in. I think I like them so far...:cool1:

annemarieda, good luck tomorrow, do the best you can, and make sure you listen to what your body tells you and take care of yourself! Believe that whatever happens, your ToT race will be fun no matter where you start or what your pace is.

and Cripey, I agree with helloirishkitty, I love your signature photos and they are very cool and inspirational! Yes, Disney running events are certainly addicting! :goodvibes

Thanks for the encouraging words. I've heard about the bike people with their balloons and wasn't sure if they were runDisney myth. I did see the golf cart sweepers during the 5K but I was pretty far ahead of them.

I am hoping that you are right and it is just breaking in the shoes...and maybe even those inserts that they sold me. I am still struggling to walk today...:sad1: Truth is I am new to running. Back in March I started training for the ToT. I have went out 3 times a week, slowly increasing distance and amount duration of running vs. walking since then (except for on week when we went to DLR) Prior to searching for a new shoe I had little to no pain. At that point, I was going the same distances I am now. In this last month I have purchased/exchanged 3 different shoes. The newest ones, I did fine in on Tuesday. No pain. I thought they were winners....but now I am thinking maybe not.

Honestly? I find the fact that you had so much residual pain concerning - my standard protocol is that if anything continues to hurt at a level of 7 or more hours after a run, it's an injury and needs to be looked at/ rested. I wore KT tape on the ankle most affected last night since it was much more painful than the other (my left) Waking this morning, both are still sore..with the left now being more than the right. I worry about injury too. It doesn't seem normal to have this go on from a pair of shoes... unless... could the shoes just be THAT bad for me. Never having used stability shoes before, maybe that is the issue? I have ran in 3 different shoes this month... minimalist... then high stability... then moderate stability. Changed from #1 - over pronation. Changed from #2 - knee pain

I am going to go pick up my bib today with the idea that I may not finish the 10k tomorrow. I had a dream I did. (my first official race dream) In my dream I finished with a time that wasn't horrible, but it was slower than the pace I have been running since June. I decided to put KT tape on the other side....hopefully one more day will make a difference.

You must be remembering that I have been complaining about my ankle for a while. When it first started (about a month ago) I had just got new shoes AND went off my medication that regulates my insulin. I had really bad edema. The swelling was horrible. I couldn't tell if it was the new shoe or the swelling that was causing my ankle joint to hurt. After going in to the doc, she decided I needed back on my medication. Meanwhile I went in to be "properly" fitted for shoes. Deemed an over pronator, I was put in a high stability shoe with an added insole to boot. After a couple runs in the new shoes and several (1/4 what I was previously taking) doses of medication the swelling was much less, the ankle bone hurt barely, but I began experiencing knee pain. It was suggested I take the insoles out. This seemed to help on the next run with the knee pain... but the shoes were still pretty heavy and my feet felt hot (I am a bare foot sort of gal) so I went in on monday to exchange for a lighter stability shoe. Meanwhile, somewhere in this I increased my dose of medication again... to half what I was taking originally. Now, even with the 100 degree heat... no edema. First run in the new shoes was on tuesday - I ran 4 miles. ... no pain.. felt great. I thought we had a winner. Yesterday I went 5 miles but decided to throw in some walk intervals in prep for the 10k (thinking I would be better off in the heat taking some walk breaks over the course) I did fine in the first and second mile, the third I started to notice some pain. The 4th was getting really uncomfortable and by the time I reached the 5th it was about unbearable.

I did wonder about PF... since I had read often people are able to run...but then it hurts after. This seemed to be the case with me. However... when I say the heel/ankle... it is really not the bottom of my foot at all. It is also not the Achilles. It is the outside on both feet, just behind the ankle bone...between it and the heel. If I walk on my heels... no pain. If I walk on the balls of my feet.. no pain. If I walk, but purposely over pronate and roll on the insides of my feet... barely pain. If I walk how I would normally walk and roll a bit to the outside... OUCH! If while sitting, I flex my feet I can reproduce the pain along the outside of my entire foot. Does any of this make sense? :confused3
