It takes a while to break in a new pair of shoes, and if you run for a long or far time in them, they can certainly get your feet killing (same goes for the opposite on old shoes). But making it 5 miles is certainly good news, just don't get discouraged and keep it up. From the sounds of it you'll have your new shoes broken in by the time the Disney race comes.
As for Saturday...I think it's going to depend on how your feet feel. I think it also depends on how many corrals there will be. Just get out there and give it your all. I did the wine and dine the first year they had it, there were 4 corrals, I did a half marathon before it for placement and did like 11 minute miles and was put in Corral B. I wouldn't worry too much about your corral placement and just concentrate on the race and making sure you don't hurt too much. The most important thing is to just get the race in for the experience and to make sure you can do it. Good luck, although it sounds like from the amount you train, you won't need it. Just take it easy enough that you're still good for the ToT!
I am hoping that you are right and it is just breaking in the shoes...and maybe even those inserts that they sold me. I am still struggling to walk today...

Truth is I am new to running. Back in March I started training for the ToT. I have went out 3 times a week, slowly increasing distance and amount duration of running vs. walking since then (except for on week when we went to DLR) Prior to searching for a new shoe I had little to no pain. At that point, I was going the same distances I am now. In this last month I have purchased/exchanged 3 different shoes. The newest ones, I did fine in on Tuesday. No pain. I thought they were winners....but now I am thinking maybe not.
Honestly? I find the fact that you had so much residual pain concerning - my standard protocol is that if anything continues to hurt at a level of 7 or more hours after a run, it's an injury and needs to be looked at/ rested. Breaking in new shoes should not cause that kind of pain. I think you'll really have to assess whether doing the 10K with the intention of getting a good time could result in greater injury - a hard call, I know. Maybe go into it with the idea that you'll see how it feels and be willing to call it a day if the pain gets worse?
I wore KT tape on the ankle most affected last night since it was much more painful than the other (my left) Waking this morning, both are still sore..with the left now being more than the right. I worry about injury too. It doesn't seem normal to have this go on from a pair of shoes... unless... could the shoes just be THAT bad for me. Never having used stability shoes before, maybe that is the issue? I have ran in 3 different shoes this month... minimalist... then high stability... then moderate stability. Changed from #1 - over pronation. Changed from #2 - knee pain
I am going to go pick up my bib today with the idea that I may not finish the 10k tomorrow. I had a dream I did. (my first official race dream) In my dream I finished with a time that wasn't horrible, but it was slower than the pace I have been running since June. I decided to put KT tape on the other side....hopefully one more day will make a difference.
Just a thought, and I apologize because I can't remember if you've already stated if you know what's going on with your heel and ankle, but I've recently started dealing with PF and it hurts pretty bad in my heel too. And I'm finding that after my runs, when it hurts the most, I end up walking weird for a day or two...which is now starting to affect my ankle...I've noticed it gets pretty sore a few times lately. Maybe that's what's ailing you? I finally got the referral to a podiatrist this week from my doctor...stress fracture was ruled out, thank goodness. Anyway, like I said, I'm sorry if you've already mentioned that you have a diagnosis...but in case you don't, just thought I'd throw that out there. I hope it starts to feel better soon...definitely take it easy this weekend on your 10k if it starts to hurt...it's not worth making it worse!
You must be remembering that I have been complaining about my ankle for a while. When it first started (about a month ago) I had just got new shoes AND went off my medication that regulates my insulin. I had really bad edema. The swelling was horrible. I couldn't tell if it was the new shoe or the swelling that was causing my ankle joint to hurt. After going in to the doc, she decided I needed back on my medication. Meanwhile I went in to be "properly" fitted for shoes. Deemed an over pronator, I was put in a high stability shoe with an added insole to boot. After a couple runs in the new shoes and several (1/4 what I was previously taking) doses of medication the swelling was much less, the ankle bone hurt barely, but I began experiencing knee pain. It was suggested I take the insoles out. This seemed to help on the next run with the knee pain... but the shoes were still pretty heavy and my feet felt hot (I am a bare foot sort of gal) so I went in on monday to exchange for a lighter stability shoe. Meanwhile, somewhere in this I increased my dose of medication again... to half what I was taking originally. Now, even with the 100 degree heat... no edema. First run in the new shoes was on tuesday - I ran 4 miles. ... no pain.. felt great. I thought we had a winner. Yesterday I went 5 miles but decided to throw in some walk intervals in prep for the 10k (thinking I would be better off in the heat taking some walk breaks over the course) I did fine in the first and second mile, the third I started to notice some pain. The 4th was getting really uncomfortable and by the time I reached the 5th it was about unbearable.
I did wonder about PF... since I had read often people are able to run...but then it hurts after. This seemed to be the case with me. However... when I say the heel/ankle... it is really not the bottom of my foot at all. It is also not the Achilles. It is the outside on both feet, just behind the ankle bone...between it and the heel. If I walk on my heels... no pain. If I walk on the balls of my feet.. no pain. If I walk, but purposely over pronate and roll on the insides of my feet... barely pain. If I walk how I would normally walk and roll a bit to the outside... OUCH! If while sitting, I flex my feet I can reproduce the pain along the outside of my entire foot. Does any of this make sense?
