Official ground breaking of Star Wars land

With all the expansions going on at WDW, one thing is for sure - EVERYTHING will be done by 2021 - WDW 50th Anniversary!

I say walkways and restaurants open 2019, with construction walls along all walkways surrounding all rides. Delays on ride systems so they can "get it just right" for another 6, no, 9 months.

In theory, you should have Toy Story Land open prior to Star Wars. That will be a significant draw to the park, there is no need to rush star wars. I'm betting with Toy Story open and Star Wars under construction, the park will see historical peak attendance. While you might think that adding the star wars area will ease the crowding, it will bring additional people with it as well.

Seems like overall, they are not actually going to make the park much bigger, just re-use existing areas

The park will expand in guest areas meaning back stage areas now become on stage areas but that actual footprint shouldn't change much.

Yeah but in truth an awful lot of the expansion is just reusing LMA and Backlot tour. Unless they actually extend into the parking lot.

Yes, I was mainly talking about how Toy Story land will use what is all currently backstage.

Has there been an announcement

Has there been an official statement about breaking ground on Toy Story Land?

There is no benefit to opening themepark lands in coordination with the movie's premiers. Movies die faster and faster and there isn't likely to be a significant on property "swell" even for Star Wars...a lot of crowd shifting though.

Yeah, I never understood people try to make that connection. It would just be too difficult to coordinate this sort of thing and for very little gain.

In truth...much of the original MGM constructed space/facilities has been mothballed or repurposed into offices that have nothing to do with the park since the early 90's...if they repurpose it...the net effect will seem like twice as big of a park...maybe 3 times as much

IMO, it is important to get SWL done as soon as possible. This is because of the push from Universal. Universal is pushing big with HPW and building things up and Disney is at a crossroads where they need to respond ASAP and SWL is the way to do it.

We've been saying that for 5 years...
Nobody seems to care. And by "nobody"...I mean Increasing record attendance.

Okay, today is April 14, 2016. Let's revisit this post when it's completed and see how long it took them to get it completed. My over/under is 3 years, and I'm taking the over.

I will take the over as well!

Sadly yes...

They just won't PAY to construct quickly...which is completely stupid because they have allowed imagineering to burn through cash and time without Regard to how much of a Strain it puts on everything.

Just silly

Its such an interesting thing, though, trends/popularity/customer loyalty/social phenomenon. WDW is, undoubtedly impacted by all of those, in many ways it is a social phenomenon. Its rooted in our society, you know that whole "you just won the super bowl ..." thing. Disney is so huge, and such a juggernaut that its very difficult to see this stopping, the inertia is has built up is incredible, and yet, there are countless such behemoths, that no one thought would fall by the wayside, that have. The British Navy/Empire, Black Berry, US Manufactured Cars (remember when imports were all cheap and crap?), of course you can look at each now and point out "why" they are no longer dominant, but there was a time when people thought they would always be, that they were unstoppable, nothing would ever compare. And people were -sure- of this. Personally I still think that of WDW, I think the people running it are too smart to give up their market dominance, and will adjust things however they have to in order to ensure dominance, if that means after all this up-charging and squeezing of the customer turns people off of WDW they need to discount deeply, they will, and they will bring the crowds back and all will be well (assuming the crowds go away ever). But, what I am getting at here, like so many social phenomenon, so many dominant products subject to the whim of the market, what (arguably) keeps Disney rolling right now, despite the massive price increases and the cut backs, its position in society, the emotional attachment some have, its iconic position as the "it" place to bring your children, etc ... is the same thing that can sink a Ship like WDW in the future. If the market breaks to another product, IF they push people over the edge, if they fail to innovate and keep up with the competition, it might be too late to recover. It wont matter what Disney does, what theme parks it opens or how it cuts costs, all that will be rolled into the social narrative about it. Like I said, I don't think this will happen, I really don't - I -think- they are too smart, but I also think the company is reaching out toward those edges of consumer tolerance and market elasticity, its pressing to see how far they can go and maintain revenue while increasing margins. At some point the market will snap, I just wonder how far they are going to push.
