Official DISNEY Cake Chatter Thread - Part II

My daughter will be turning twelve during our upcoming trip/end of August. She is a animal LOVER so for her actual bday we decided to go to AK then over to AKL to view savannahs, dinner at BOMA. She is always watching the cake boss shows so I was really hoping to get her a cool cake for her special day. I've read all the scarey reviews and problems with AK custom cakes but was crossing my fingers that I would get lucky. No such luck. Finally contacted by head chef after waiting a few days for response. I had asked for a price on a 10 inch fondont covered cake. I wanted to keep animal theme since that's the idea of our day. Asked for white with black zebra stripes fondont and then just a few molded animals around to make it have an animal kingdom theme. I would be willing to pay somewhere around $100. Well she told me it would be $35 to $40 for EACH animal on top of $70 for the cake no special filling.. nothing.. just wanted a cute looking cake for her. I think a striped cake with just one molded animal would not be worth $100. I guess we are settling for a plain 6 inch cake and I

will have a local bakery do a nice cake when we get home and celebrate with

rest of family. It's too bad the cake offerings are not more consistent among
the bakeries. I've seen some amazing cakes that chef Brian has done for $85.

Did you ask about the 2d edible transfer, where the attach an edible picture on a white chocolate plaque? They can't possible charge that much for that!

She did mention an edible tranfer on top (not specific 2d on top of choc.) she made it sound more like it would be just more flat on top of cake and then she would pipe colored frosting around that would match the transfer. I don't have the exact price in front of me but I know it was still way up there and not worth it if it was going to be the way she described. Not too much excitement factor there. It's just hard because do you take the chance and fork over money for something that may turn out to be far less than you expected or hope that disney magic will hit AKL that day. I am far from a picky person but I'd rather not spend a ton of $ on a transfer cake that we could get basically the same idea in local market for $25. Not sure of what I'd get since I've seen so many people have a bad experience.
No matter what happens, I'm sure my daughter will still have an incredible birthday. How could she not? She'll be with Mickey

I agree with you, the flat edible transfers are not that exciting and not worth the money. It's not an easy decision though. I wish they would create a website with all the examples of what they offer so we would all know exactly what we are going to get. They could have a selection of 10 or so offerings that would cover most occasions and we could just pick from there. It would really make this process so much easier

If you look back throu the pictures here there is one where they made a hut out of chocolate and then the 2d animal images.

Have you considered having an animal themed cake somewhere other than at AKL? Based on my own personal experience with a less than stellar cake there I'd skip getting a cake at AKL. Do you have ADR for CM perhaps? Or even, dare I say it, Google Orlando/Lake Buena Vista area bakeries and see about having a great cake delivered to your resort or pick it up.

You might want to send her a picture http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=34981946&postcount=145 of this cake. It's adorable and seems to be close to what you'd like. Good luck!

I thought of going somewhere else for dinner or getting the cake the night before her b-day from somewhere else. I think our plans to see AKL that day are outweighing the cake and having the cake on another day would be wierd. I also thought of getting it del. to our room (CBR) but as our plans stand now we will leave for park early and not be back to room until after dinner so it might be too late or she would wonder where the cake is during dinner. Especially if we don't get a surprise birthday cupcake or something. Boy this planning is killing me but isn't it half the fun and excitement?? What will I do when this trip is over?? I know .. plan another:laughing:

That would be very helpful to us and I would think disney also.
I saw several AKL cakes but don't remem a hut. I'll have to look back. Sounds interesting.

I called and left a message yesterday for the Slipper desserts and I haven't heard back !!Should I keep trying !!!??????

I had called and left a message early in the morning, and received a call back within a few hours.....what time of day did you call? I would wait and see....however don't they have a message as to when you can order? I forget, but I think the message said they didn't accept orders on Fridays???

Good luck.

Does anyone have Pat's email address? If you do can you PM it to me. After spending an hour on the phone with her to order our daughters birthday cake, my DH forgot to write down her email even though she said to email her the photos. We haven't been able to get back in touch with her since then *cry*

Hey Tricia1972!!! I just wanted to know where you can buy the chocolate puzzles. Thanks!!!! Tink97

Okay, I'm kind of doing this backwards.....but I'm trying to figure out where to eat on our arrival day for my ds's birthday. I really want to have a nice meal, BUT....I'd really like to eat somewhere that has Chef Brian's cakes LOL Sooooo, which restaurants offer cakes made by him? Thanks!!!

I just placed my cake order and am now worried. I would like the choc slipper on top of my daughters cake, but I dont like the look of the truffles or cream inside, so I asked that it be empty. I got the vibe from Pat that this might not look right, and now im worried....has anyone else ever gotten an empty slipper? She also informed me theyre too busy to do a shaped cake for me, so off the bat its already different than I wanted and I just dont want too many surprises to lead to disappointment. I dont like to be the picky pete, but for a cake thats over $100 Id like to make sure its something I'll like and now Im a little nervous it wont be!

Restaurants at...

The Contemporary
Magic Kingdom
Wilderness Lodge
Fort Wilderness

... but you must order through Contemporary Private Dining if you want it someplace that's not the Contemporary.

I think an empty slipper will look fine on top of a cake. :)

Okay....all those restaurants were pretty much booked for our arrival night except Fort Wilderness. I figured since he's turning 8, it would be a good place....then we could head over to the campfire after if we got done in time.

Sooooo, I don't have to be staying at the Contemporary, right? I just call Contemporary Private dining and I can get his email and work something out?

Thanks....:)

This may not help with a cake but if you time yor dinner at Kona or O'hana just right you can watch the MK fireworks from the beach after dinner. That would be a nice way to cap off a birthday celebration! I'm sure the cakes at the Poly will be nice too.

Thank you, I really appreciate your response. The more I think it over though, (and read through this thread) the more I'm feeling like maybe I should just cancel it. Disney doesnt allow outside food in, do they? Like if I opted to order from a local bakery instead? Would I still be able to have it at 1900 PF? I'm just really worried after reading some of the stories on here, leaving my $100 cake up to someone else without having any idea what it will look like. I was told they were too busy to do what I wanted....yet then on here im reading about other chefs that are telling customers to send in pics and details....my whole phone conversation lasted less than 10 minutes :confused3
