Thank you all about the fondant info - very helpful indeed.

SO now I have another (yes, another!) question ...

I'm going to get the cake for us to have in our room. I assume it'll be in a box as I'm picking it up from the BB. We'll probably eat off of it for 3 days, maybe 4. Should I pack something in our suitcase to keep the cake fresh? If so, what do you suggest.

Also (yes, 2 questions!) should I pack a knife to cut it with, plasic plates and forks or do you think I could get something from the hotel (ASMu) to cut/eat it with?

I just want to be prepared. Thanks again!

Here's the trick: If you order a cake with mousse filling between the layers, it will spoil if you don't refrigerate it, no matter what you keep it in. This last time, I ordered a cake with buttercream frosting between the layers and brought a large Tupperware to keep it in—and it lasted for 3 or 4 days afterward.

Not too shabby for being squooshed in our suitcase for 7 hours!

I'm always leery of bringing anything resembling a knife through TSA. You might investigate getting one of those serrated plastic pie/cake servers though, and maybe papr plates. ASMu's food court will have all the plastic cutlery you need.

Yes, call the Cake Hotline. You can try requesting a specific flavor, but it seems like it's kind of a crapshoot what you'll get.

Thanks I think I will just order 2 and take my chances !! I want them to be the same so there is no feuding !!!:rotfl2:

Ah! Excellent - I would not have thought of this. ASMu doesn't have refrigerators in the room unless you pay for one @ $10 a day - so no mousse filling!

Yeah, I figured it would have to be in checked baggage, if at all. But I just remembered a trick - unwaxed, unflavored dental floss! Easy to pack in the makeup case!!! Paper plates would be simple to pack.

Thanks again!!!

Of course! The bakery is called Buttercup Cakes, they have a website: http://www.mybuttercupcakes.com/default.html and the owner, Dani, is really great to work with. Our cakes were about $200 a piece and the delivery fee was $20.

The decoration is fab on those, do you mind my asking about the quality and flavor of the cake ? We are getting burned out on the hit or miss nature of cakes through Disney and may go this route on our next trip. Thanks for your help.

Of course!
We arrived on January 3rd and left on the 13th and honestly, they were still delicious on our departure date; nice and moist like they were when Dani delivered them. I thought the coconut/lime cake (that's the Mike one) was to die for, even though the other one was the one chosen with me in mind (I love red velvet cake). I don't have much 'fondant experience' to compare these to, but it didn't taste awful, although I did end up eating around it for the most part. Definitely edible though! Also, not sure if there's a choice but the icing that topped the cake (under the fondant) seemed to be more of the whipped variety? It was a little too sweet for my taste... but then again, I didn't specify, so that might be something that she'll change for you.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with!

What about a chocolate slipper? We got one for DD at 1900 PF. It's under 20 bucks.:thumbsup2

I would love to order one of these for my 5 year old niece. We're going to 1900 Park Fare on our first night and it's her first trip. How far in advance do I need to call to order it? We arrive April 18th.

Hi, I ordered the slipper and my anniversary cake about 3 weeks out. Did it all on the same day. I called GF private dining.:goodvibes

When I called CR private dining the other day the lady that answered said to give at least 48 hours notice. I wouldn't dare do anything under 2 weeks though. I am just cautious like that.

Has anyone had a non screen print Fairies cake from Contemporary? I told Brian I wanted an Iridessa cake but I think DD would like all of them better. If I got the figures and sent them over there the week of, how do you think it would turn out?

first a thanks to everyone here for the variety of cakes posted - they helped me find the inspiration for the amazing grooms cake i suprised my (now) hubby with at our 1/25/11 DFTW - it was amazing!!!

first off, our wedding cake: there was lots of back and forth over this one. first we wanted a mad hatter, then we saw another disboards bride lovely tea cup cake. after much stress, we were able to work out this cake from that tea cup inspiration!
the inspiration:

this is beautiful but WAY out of our budget! then i sent in this inspiration sketch -

this is almond flavored cake with alternating layers of chocolate buttercream and respberry mousse throughout both layers with buttercream frosting - i'm not a fondant fan so no fondant was important. the only fondant on this cake is the little lantern decorations on the top layer. the teacups all around are white chocolate, the one on the top is hand painted with red and gold designs. this cake was $450 (plus whatever edding taxes and delivery fees we incurred) and made at the GF bakery - DIVINE! our pastry chef was Rick Roman - i will be working on his thank you letter today!

the grooms cake was a surprise i tried to cook up and took about 4 years off my life. :scared1: i had thoroughly scoured the interwebs and this hread to find examples of HM cakes - and a few that folks weren't so happy with... up till the final surprise reveal, i didn't know exactly what we would get - but it was stunning! my groom was truly surprised and the cake has been the talk of the wedding!! ultimately, i submitted several pics from these boards and the interwebs along with a request for HM elements (wall paper, hitch hiking ghosts, the 999 years quote somewhere and a picture of us) - here are the amazing results!

this cake was red velvet with - i think - the baileys filling? or the amaretto -something alcoholic!! it was a single layer, but you can see the crazy decorations - all chocolate! this cake was $250 and i must say i KNOW this was an amazing bargain for the quality we ended up with:

note all the chocolate work! the coffin had a light inside of it!

yes, thats the HM wallpaper - in ride accurate purple! - AND hitchhiking ghosts! also, i had a friend photo shop our photos into the bride and groom portraits from the HM - that is what is on the CHOCOLATE picture frame to the right of the cake base, surounded by dark chocolate and gilded roses (and another glowing light!).

Wow, I'm speechless over that HM cake. You definitely got the deal of the century. I have a feeling we couldn't duplicate that price for that cake, but it would be worth a try. ;) If I thought I could, I'd make a Father's Day ADR at one of the GF restaurants & drive over for the day just to get my DH one. I'm assuming it also came from the GF bakery, correct?

yes, we did all our catering from the GF kitchens and pastry kitchens! and, agreed - we ended up with an amazing cake - i think maybe the chef felt a bit of pity for us because both our cakes were kind of a production and our wedding planner was changed midway through the process and i don't think our first planner was a cake person! also, as i have seen lurkyloo recommend, i really just submitted some pictures (also a sad little cake that someone had recieved on these boards with a little "x" through it) and our budget. our planner later told us he was excited to get the chance to be creative with it as well. honestly, it was WAY bigger than i expected it to be - we were extremely pleased!

So it's our first visit EVER in May and I really, really, really want to do a special cake but the Grand Floridian does the cakes for the Polynesian, not Brian at the Contemporary. Since we are leaving the park for dinner anyway I think I am going to change ADR's to get the cake and chef that I really want.....is this crazy???
