Official Cake Chatter Thread

I was playing "Phone tag" with Pat for only 1 day. I also agree that there are many, many people ordering cakes and that she is very busy. I simply couldn't answer the phone when she called. I am a CT Tech at a hospital here in Norfolk. I was in the middle of 4 Trauma patients, and a stroke patient at the same time. I don't think any of my patients would've appreciated my taking a personal phone call to order a cake. She must understand that you WILL have to return people's phone calls. From what I understand, she is fairly new at her job. Maybe she needs an inservice on simple customer service!!! Once again, thank you for letting me rant!:flower3:

I understand, my family has a Image Center here in So Cal, mostly doing hearts, we just got a Ultra Sound Mach. Anyways, there was no way you could have answered the phone at that time. Im not sure if its Pat I chatted with, she said her name so fast I didn't know what she was saying. Im sorry you played phone tag, but it sounds like you got your cake ordered. Which is good.

With the way the economy is, people have to understand they will be one person doing two - three peoples worth of work. You do what you have to do and try to be cheery about it. As for me, how hard was it to hang up the phone, wait a few seconds and call me back, she should have my number right there and leave me a message? I don't get it and frankly it doesn't matter. I'll get the cake some how. lol

It's unbelieveable! In 2007 I ordered a white chocolate Mickey and the Minnie for the top of our anniversary cake. They were $25 a piece at the time and I thought that was expensive. Anyway, I called back later, deciding to save $25 and do away with the Minnie. Well, when we got the cake at Whispering Canyon it had both M&M on it and it ended up being a bit of magic.
I do think the prices for their cakes are getting out of hand. I think I paid almost $80 for the cake I wanted but thinking about it...it's was a simple cake and it was half the price of my whole entire wedding cake..and we never even ate it!

It is amazing to me that they just decide on each call how much to charge for things like toppers :rolleyes1. I knew the cake was going to be expensive as I have been reading most of these posts. The cake itself is $45, but why the different price for the topper is really strange. The cake is going to cost $80+tip+tax.

Also, I added my cake before but here's another shot. It's the back of the cake lol I used it for the end of our scrapbook with the saying, 'The end' I'd have to root through CD's to find the front version but these are the white chocolate characters. This was from Whispering Canyon in May 2007.

I love the picture..................:rotfl. The cake I ordered is a chocolate cake with raspberry filling and chocolate buttercream frosting and the Mickey. I hope they do more than just put the Mickey on top of the cake. I hope it turns out as pretty as yours.

I agree. I don't mean to keep harping, but why would you go to work for Disney if you aren't willing to deliver "Disney" magic for your customers, then maybe you're in the wrong business! But, you are right. I got the cake I wanted, so I should just be happy! I certainly won't let it effect my trip!!!:goodvibes

Are they not able to do the edible images like the cakes you can get at MK? If not, that really stinks...

They cannot do edible images at WL. Wish they could; it would have saved me a trip to Boardwalk Bakery two years in a row now. Que sera sera, I guess.

To the PP who posted pics of the cake with Minnie and Mickey... I wonder if they still do that? We asked specifically what they could do, and they said no characters, no edible images, none of the hand painted characters, just flowers, sprinkles, or frosting balloons. Three different folks told us some variation of this (no balloons before this last phone call), going back to 2008.

Gah, that really stinks. You would think a "deluxe" hotel's bakery would be able to do more than sprinkle on some mickey sprinkles for a disney cake.

I really don't understand why they are making this cake ordering so difficult from what a lot of you guys have said. If they don't want to do it, why advertise the "specialty" (sp?) cakes so heavily on the disney web site?

It was really difficult to get what I wanted. The first time I called the CM really pushed the podium cake and I insisted and when she finally knew I wasn't going for it she then didn't want to take my order because I was "too far out from my ressie". I told her I would just call back. I called 2 weeks ago and spoke with Sonya, for a cake at Sci-Fi, at first she wanted to push the podium cake and again I insisted I knew what I wanted and it was a speciality cake. She took my order and said she would get back with me because she would have to check with a chef to see if it could be done and how much it would cost. A week later she called me back, after I called her first, and let me know it could be done and the price. I am just wondering why my White Chocolate Mickey is going to cost me $35 when someone else got it for $30 :rolleyes1. Oh well, C'est la vie.

Ugh, that is ridiculous! I really don't get the charging different prices to different people. You would think they would rather you order the specialty cakes instead of the podium cakes since it will be much more expensive...

After reading all of this, I think I am just going to attempt to go with a plain cake with mickey sprinkles at WL (if they are willing to do it...I have doubts that will even be easily accomplished). While I love the way the speciality cakes look and taste, I don't want to deal with all of that. I want to be able to get the cake early in my stay since it will be so short so we can actually try to eat most of it. If I wait till we go to 1900 Park Fare it will be too late and I won't be able to get it back to our hotel. It'll just be easier and cheaper, in a nutshell.

I did order a speciality cake for a fireworks cruise from the GF for Jan 2009. When I called to make the cruise res., the cm, of course, recommended ordering some room service or a cake. Since we were celebrating our anniversary, I thought a little cake would be great. I really hadn't read much about these cakes at that point, so, I called the gf bakery without any prior planning. This was in October, btw. I was able to order one of the really small castle cakes, but I also agree my experience wasn't great. The person just wasn't particularly friendly. She seemed really disinterested. Anyway, I arranged for the cake to be delivered to the cruise. Well, when we got back to our home after our trip was over, there was a message from the cake lady that had been left on the day of our cruise saying there was a problem with my cake and to call her. I was like "what the heck?!" Why would you call my home in Alabama when I am at your resort?! I thought that was weird. I don't know what the supposed problem was because we got the cake...:confused3

I just had the complete opposite experience from you...

I just called and ordered a special cake from the California Grill for my dad's 60th birthday next month. The lady that took my order was helpful, enthusiastic, and more than willing to go the extra mile to make sure that I got what I wanted.

I ordered a 10 inch vanilla cake, with vanilla buttercream frosting. it will have a Goofy image on it and it will say "Happy 60th Birthday, Dad". it will also have fruit mousse between the layers.

She even called me back to ask what color I wanted the flowers on the cake on the bottom.

A little hint for this kind of service: you kill more flies with honey!

I also got great service. Glad to hear somebody else did to:goodvibes

What was your price???

I think that the total was $65 but I will double check on that. There was an upcharge for the Goofy image.

Decided to answer my own questions by actually picking up the phone and calling! :) I thought I'd share my info for anyone else who might be curious.

I was told the same cake options as MK. So, all white or all chocolate. Nothing exciting. You have to do 8" or larger to get an image. She said the price on the image varies with cake size. I'm doing 8in, and it comes to $42. It was $32 for the cake, and $10 for the image. This is a little higher than I had read, so I felt it was worth putting out here. I'm sure there are more people reading this that want special cakes but don't really want to spend a hundred bucks on just one! We're also doing the mickey head cake and I was given a price of $48. Again, a touch higher than I saw on here, but only by a couple bucks. Plus tax & gratuity, of course.

I spoke to two different people because I forgot to ask about the mickey head cake on the first call. Neither one of them seemed very happy to help me. :sad2: If anyone gets any different info about cakes @ Chef Mickey, please share!

This is what happened to me as well. I read over these threads for weeks trying to think of the perfect cake for DD. I finally called to order it and I was told it was all Chocolate or all vanilla. Nothing special could be done. I could add an image for $10 more. I was so upset. I ordered a chocolate cake w/ all the princesses on it. It cost me $52 w/ tax and tip. And it was gross. I was very disapointed in it. I make cake a lot for events and couldn't believe I paid that for a dry cake.

Here's hoping this time around is better.

WOW, I couldn't have been nicer to that lady if I tried. I was so excited to order my DD's birthday cake for her first trip ever to Disney, that I had no ill-intent on my mind. BTW, I waited tables for 5 years before and during college. I understand that things can be hectic, but I also understood that my sole purpose for being there was for the customer.

Price: [can't remember]
Location: Beach Club
Date Received: July 7, 2008
Cake Info: Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Buttercream. We were married in WDW in 2003, and return every year for our anniversary. Every year we get a cake to celebrate. They haven't been able to replicate the top of our cake yet, but will keep giving it a try.

I agree. They have your dates and they should have known you would not be home no matter the problem. Now, I am really going to throw them for a loop come Monday. I found out today that my DDBF has berry allergies so I will have to change the filling. I sure hope they get it right.

Same here. I was very nice and during the course of our conversation Sonya said she was from a town very near where I live. We talked about that for quiet a while.
