OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

Has anyone heard anything about pre-ordering Dooneys this year? Although I wasn't at marathon weekend last year I read you were able to pre-order on active.

Has anyone heard anything about pre-ordering Dooneys this year? Although I wasn't at marathon weekend last year I read you were able to pre-order on active.

Emails just went out a little bit ago about the preorders. Teensy photos, but price information and vague design info. I hope there's more information available...or will wait for the Expo and take my chances.

I asked myself the same question, 8 more miles??? Lol. I'm putting faith in my training plan and the fact that it'll be a "race" in Disney to push me through. I'm lucky that I have no issue with the mental aspect, I can push myself to do anything. My thoughts are with how I'll feel post run. I have 2 days left in Disney after the run and I want to be able to at least gimp around ;-).

I'm just worried about my legs and tiredness. Hopefully the race aspect will pull me through!

You have it bagged, just need to get to race day. It's just a short jog from the WWoS Softball fields to the Epcot Parking Lot.

Lol..I'm going to remember that when I'm running it :lmao:

Coach promised heat last year, and we (maybe just me?) suffered coming from Colorado. I'm counting on his consistency, because I'd really like to see some low 40's this year. :thumbsup2

Low 40's...I'll die.

And I'll cry!!! The idea of it being that cold freaks me out more than thinking I still have 8 more miles to run. I'm just gonna keep telling myself that it'll be a cold compromise now that you're in Florida...until I see that 10 day forecast

GREAT JOB!!!! I thought the same thing at the end of mine yesterday, but we can do it!!! :cheer2:

Yes we can!!:grouphug:

Just remember once you make it through DHS its...

Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach, Epcot then HOME... Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach, Epcot then HOME... Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach, Epcot then HOME... Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach, Epcot then HOME...

Runners can definitely ride Everest but I'm not sure at what time it exactly opens.Last year I started in corral G and that start put me in front of Everest like 3-4 minutes before 9am,I think I had a great shot at riding it last year but skipped it just in case it may have delayed me too much.I assume I'll be in an earlier corral for this year and plan to be around Everest well before 9am and totally expect to try and ride it if possible. At what time will it open,I'm hoping it opens earlier than park opening time for runners, otherwise my best shot may have been this past year.

It opens at 9am. With the new course, that makes it harder to ride because you get there around mile 13 instead of mile 17 on the pre-2013 course.

This might be a silly question, but I want to know the answer either way!

Should the distance walked after a training run count towards the total mileage? Can walking an extra mile or two after the run be an advantage/disadvantage in training?

I ask because this Saturday I ended up leaving myself at least an extra mile to get back to my car after my 16 mile run (I usually leave about .5 mile to force myself to walk and not be tempted to just sit in my car and go home right away.) So I really did 17 miles.

I was cursing myself at the time because I was freezing and it felt like it took an hour to get back to my car! It got me thinking though: would adding an extra mile or 2 of walking to a run allow me to get in more miles with less risk of injury, would it make no difference, or would it actually hurt me because I am walking on already sore muscles?

If it makes any difference, I am a Galloway run/walker.

Not a silly question!

There are really two camps of thought... One is that the miles as you describe are warm up and warm down miles so it really does not count. The other is that you walked these miles and yes they do count. For the vast majority of folks looking to run a marathon, the latter applies. Most of us are not continuous runners nor are we looking to grab race or age group hardware. Further, I seriously doubt that many on the board actually do a warm up and even less a warm down. Whether you knew it or not, you are a coach's dream as you are doing your warm up and downs as part of your run.

Do they count as miles? I say count them in the end, but run the designated miles regardless. Give yourself the bonus miles of the warm up and down. They do count as you are making the steps and putting distance under your feet.

Another question that many others have...

Can I break my run up morning and then night? I have 16 scheduled can I run 8 in the morning then 8 at night and call it 16?

It is possible to break an occasional run into pieces but do not make a practice of it. I would also not count the runs as full distance runs. For the example I would count the total miles in the day as 12 not the 16 (taking at least a 25% deduction for the recovery in the middle but preferably a 40% deduction). One is getting the miles under foot, but they are not deriving the cardio benefit with the recovery in the middle.

What about taking an hour break in the middle of the run --- my boss called and I need to solve a problem kind of thing. Again, an occasional break is ok. In this case, the body is still really working to some degree for an hour or so. Taking this break then restarting is not going to be all that detrimental.

Hope this helps...

Last year my wife and kids saw me inside Hollywood Studios, and I think that was far better than the finish line. I was actually able to see them, high five, take pictures, etc. whereas the finish they are so far back that none of that is really possible. It was also great to have that mental boost to close out the last 3 miles. They then met me in the reunion area, as it took me a while for medal, pictures, ice station, etc.

We're planning the same HS location for this year, but they will just stay in the park and I'll meet them for lunch.

We don't have Park Hopper tix for the week and we are going to MK after the race. I think I'll have her look for me outside of Beach Club or Yacht Club since I never see her at the end of the race. Almost every race I do, she sees me, screams and yells my name, but I'm too focused on getting to the finish line to see or hear anything.

That is the reason we meet up at England in the World Showcase. That is the point where I am absolutely my lowest and the kick in the pants works well.

Note that you will be mostly through DHS before the rope drop. A good idea for the mile 22.8 (entrance into DHS) would be for her to walk over to the Swan/Dolphin and walk up the sidewalk along Epcot Resorts Dr towards the back stage entrance into DHS. She should do this early (maybe as early as 0800) to see if she will be allowed to cross and stand in the area of the turn into the back stage area. Since it is a CM area past the gate, Security may have a say in whether spectators can stand there.

Getting back and forth to the DHS front gate is problematic from the Beach Club. The boats have reduced service and there is no bus from BC to the park. The sidewalk is the race track so walking is not going to happen.

One other easy alternative would be the mile 24 water station area. It is next to the BW tennis courts and is wider than most of the other side walk area. Ot one could set up camp in the Beach or Yacht area. The Yacht end is far less crowded than the Beach end so it would be easy to spot one another.

Hope this helps

Thanks Coach...this helps a lot. I do think I will need to see her close to the end of the race for a little pick me up. I'm guessing a sweaty hug from her will probably be too much to ask for, but I may give her one anyway. :rotfl2: At least she won't have too far to walk to see me and considering she is doing her first half the day before, she may appreciate the short travel distance from the room to the Boardwalk area.

Mr. Galloway would probably say that the miles count for building endurance, absolutely. My DW does e-coaching with him, and he had her scheduled throughout the W&D weekend with designated walks to bolster the running mileage from the Half Marathon, to keep on track for Dopey.

On top of that, the extra walking at the end will keep your muscles working, get more blood to them to transport away waste products of exercise while you're cooling down, and prevent your legs from "locking up" if you just get right in the car (for a counterexample, see me on last Saturday, who did 14 and then hopped back in the car for a 30 minute drive home -- getting out of the car was not as easy as I had hoped once I got home).

In short, I don't see how it could be a disadvantage.

My first foot blister :-(. Didn't feel a thing running, but there it is. At the end of my second toe. Weird. Hopefully it won't mess me up too much. Training has been going well to date.

I can picture it in my head!

I had a 22 miler scheduled last Sunday. It was 24 degrees outside, with a wind chill of 4 degrees - the wind was howling. I have the running gear, so it wasn't a problem. I wore my camelback under my windbreaker to keep the gatorade from freezing. My only problem was my chews - they froze solid as I had them in my windbreaker pocket. I had to keep them in my mouth for a few minutes to soften them up enough to chew.

Over-all, it was a great run. I would much rather have a long run in those conditions than in 80 degree weather. After the first mile you don't even feel the cold if you have the right gear.

DW and I both ran a small local half marathon this morning. Just used it as our normal long run. It was cold. 20 degrees at the 7:15 start. They even delayed the start to make sure there was enough light to see any ice on the road.

Either way, we both got a PR on the course which we were quite pleased with. I am more convinced than ever that I am just a much better cold weather runner. The best races I have run have been in the cooler temps. Because of this I am hoping that coach's streak continues when staying where he will be this year.

Ditto! I am so much happier and faster when it's cold out. I'm crossing my fingers!

I live in Florida so I didn't feel the temperatures were too bad for this year's marathon,I mean I know it got up to about 81-82 degrees but most of the race was in the 60's and 70's.Obviously a race start of 45-50 degrees with a high of 64 would be ideal as I also love cooler weather but I don't think 20's or 30's would work for me,that's just too much for this Floridian,I would have a hard time just getting out of bed, plus you then have all the waiting around which would be painful.

I'd be ok with a cooler run, say 40's. But I have 5 other days there that 40's would really bum me out for. So I'll hope for a high 50's start with a mid 60's finish, and maybe a high of 70 later that day. Of course I don't think Mother Nature gives two hoots about my thoughts. Lol
