OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

The perfect scenario for the race would be similar to 2003 when temps were average (50-70) coming into the weekend, a front blew in Saturday afternoon, the race was cool with a start in the upper 30's, and then the weather rewarmed to lows in the low 50's again from Monday forward.

Agreed - If you want peak performance, between 35-45 degrees is optimal. As temps rise above 50, your cardio vascular system has to expend more and more effort cooling, which takes away from performance.

I can run at 35 degrees forever.

I've been out with a bad cold since Monday and I'm nervous about my training..... you think you have cold to deal with? Up here in Montreal the high is 18 today! This will be my first full and I hope to get in some long runs this last month. Sure, running in the colder air is way easier (I had my PR for a half in the deep freeze Disney Half of 2010) but just a wee bit above the freezing point would be nice...

Local run store had 20% off, got me 2 new pairs of shoes to train and race in, feet should be in good shape come 1/12 :-).

I remember when I stepped outside my hotel room at around 230am and felt really comfortable! That actually made me so nervous. I though, oh crap...if I feel quite comfortable now in shorts and a tee shirt then what will it be like as the day progresses - and it was marathon sunday!!

I brought all these extra clothes to shed for the races and didn't need any of them for any race...esp the full.

I thought it was brutally hot for the full...esp down that long stretch of highway...the black tarmac reflecting the hot sun...geeze I remember passing those Disney characters...remember the ones that resembled the haunted house? Some fellow was out there dressed as a corpse and digging a grave? I remember thinking how hot they must have been.

While I love hot temps and want to enjoy my time in Disney this January , I don't want to start off the race feeling warm!

I always have to giggle at the race weather talks - it's all so relative! For me, ideal race conditions are temps in the low 70s and 80% humidity; a bit cooler than what I'm acclimated to, but still warm enough that I don't have cold muscle/joint issues and damp enough that my lungs stay happy. :) We had all of the hot weather warnings for Princess this year... I may have been the only Princess perfectly happy in compression capris and a tank top under a tee! :rotfl:

So I guess in a day or two we should find out what corral we are assigned to.

I am going to take a shot in the dark here and just assume I am in the next to last corral...whatever that is.

I am betting we know bib number then are forced to wait for a week or so before they flip up the corrals.

Regardless, I am betting an E for me, coming from a C last year. I submitted the same estimated time as the 2013 race. Though very , very soon, I am going to have to train hard for a half to assure my spot.

If you don't mind my asking, what time range for a half would put someone in C last year/your predicted E this year?

My sil was placed in C corral this past year for the Goofy. She run's a half in about 1:50 and a full in about 4 hours and change. That put her in the C corral.

Cool, thanks. Ideally I would like to be up in one of the first three to get a slightly better position to (ever so slightly) avoid some course crowding. One can hope...

C was a wide range of times. It took most of the 4 to 5 hour range of estimated times. I think I estimated 4:50 as a time. There were approximately 3180 runners per corral last year.

I went back to last year’s corral placements and did a quick study. I think I am revising my E to an H or I.

The two new corrals maps published to date (ToT and W&D) have been revised so they start three corrals of 500, three at 1000, four at 1500 then fill the field with 2000 per corral. Both of these earlier races start on a two lane road. The marathon starts on a three lane road so adding a little volume, one could assume corral sizes of 750, 1500, 2500 and 3000 and fill a 25,000 runner field in 15 corrals. Even if the corral sizes were kept the same as the ToT and W&D, the number of corrals would total approximately 18. As a comparison with the RnR folks, a 25k field would have approximately 25 corrals.

Hopefully we will know a little more in a couple weeks.

Dumb question but why the concern? We pay a lot of money for this event. Wouldn't you want to be on the course as long as you can.

If my hamstring doesn't improve I'm definitely going to be on the course longer than I expected.I injured it about 12 days ago jumping unto a curb on a run and about 1 minute later I just had to stop running, the pain eased off and I could finish the run of 3.5 miles but with some pain.I went about a week without running where it felt a bit tight but no real pain.I stretched it out every day and went for a longer run outside where I started feeling it again but not too bad.Today I went on the treadmill and once I got it to 5.5 it started hurting again where I had to stop and start walking.I then attempted to just finish 3.5 miles walking and running with the setting at 5,I wasn't going to go any faster.Finished it feeling it but not with bad pain.Should I just totally call off any more runs until the marathon and make sure it gets right, stretch it a couple times a day,ice it and maybe do some strength training on it.I'm not fast to start off with so my main concern is finishing the marathon healthy,I did expect to do quite a bit better than last year, right now I'll be happy if I can finish in under 6 hours.I remember a lady on the course last year around mile 22 who couldn't bend one of her knees and she had the look of frustration,I don't want that look. There's just over a month,I know it wasn't a serious hamstring pull but it obviously hasn't healed yet.

Just not in the genes or shoes for many to go anything other than warp speed.

Hoping that this is a little tongue in cheek.... Personally, I want to finish up as quickly as I can. I guess if the race was 26 miles in the parks then I may be looking to maximize the time; however, the race is 20 miles of highway and byway and after about 4 hours of World, Bear Lake and Osceola I am ready for a beer or a McFlurry

There are other reasons for the concern
1) Those who are running/walking faster than they thought they would at entry may be in a corral behind their ability. The extra energy needed to bob and weave around and through the rolling road block can take a huge toll on a participant.
2) Those who may not be sure they will average a 16 m/m pace are looking to be as far forward as they possibly can. If I am a 17m/m pacer and I can start 30 minutes in front of the last person to cross the line, I will finish the race before the sweep line with no question.
3) There is a fine hydration line on race morning. You try to top off the tank but if you are not running, the system starts to drop off fluid. The longer you have to wait before starting the more likely you are to have to stand on line more often and possibly get locked out of your corral. If one follows Disney’s instructions to the tee, they can be standing in the corrals for90 minutes or so before starting the race.

So I guess for as much as anything, it’s a planning thing.

On the other hand, anyone can run for 2 and a half hours but it takes a real marathoner to run 7 hours....

Woo hoo!
In one month's time, the suitcase will surely be out & partially packed! My gold Mickey Ears :earsgirl:will be the 1st thing packed in my carryon!

Hey, all! I had been a lurker early on, but then did not had much time to keep up w/ this or other threads.
I'm taking this weekend/week to re-read the thread & related for any gems of wisdom! :surfweb:
(lol, the first 30pages or so are mostly pre-registration rumours and hysteria! )

I do 10 & 1s (run 10mins, walk1 min), and I'm doing the Galloway Training for the Dopey.
Although this will be my 1st marathon, I'm looking at this as more of a fun Disney event. (planning on my 1st "serious" marathon in Fall 2014, maybe in Ontario: Hamilton or Toronto)

After this weekend's walks/runs, I'm confident I can do the 4 distances & have no concerns of being swept even if I end up needing/wanting to walk a lot of the last of the marathon.
(It was bitter cold on Sunday, and I took 2 tumbles, one on the frozen rocky non-sidewalk, and the other was a slip on an icecovered sidewalk.....this is part of why you see runners on the roads! no harm done, "other" than bruised, cut & sore shoulder/elbow/hand/thighs/knees! lol!)

Looking forward to reading the rest of the thread & especially anything shared in the coming weeks! Thank you all so much :worship:

Thanks, G

I just finished my 20 mile training run on Sunday! It is my last long training run before the marathon. I'm so happy its out of the way. I was dreading it but in the end it wasn't all that bad. I found a local 1/2 marathon that started about 3 miles from where I live and then simply got up early and ran an additional 7 before the race started. I was actually surprised with my 1/2 time. It wasn't my fastest but it wasn't all that shabby either. The best part is aside from a head cold (blah) everything else feels good. Now I can enjoy the Holidays and just maintain until the marathon.
