OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

Thanks for the additional suggestions. And yeah, not really what I wanted to hear but not unexpected. I'll definitely give some of those strength exercises a shot and I'll see about trying some water running at our fitness center.

Hi, all,
I've hit a snag in my training and just wanted to whine about it here and see if anyone has additional advice. Training for my second marathon and all was well until a 17 mile training run several weeks back. After the run my right hip and knee started bothering me. Discomfort was minimal so I didn't adjust my training. 3 weeks ago I ran a local half marathon and the knee became bothersome and then ultimately quite painful by the end of the run. I've seen a trainer and a sports medicine person who both think my suspicion of IT band issues is correct. I'm rolling it twice a day and stretching and took a two week break from training but improvement is minimal. I ran an easy 4 miles on Tuesday and the pain flared right back up. We are scheduled for a 20 miler this weekend and I'm pretty sure I can't do that mileage right now.

So what to do? Do I just continue to lay off the running for another couple of weeks and then try again? Push through and just see what I can manage? I'm so frustrated and worried about being recovered by January.

I had the same problem that began when I hit 18 miles in training for my first marathon. Since then, I have adopted Jeff Galloway's run-walk-run method and have had no further IT band pain. I even improved my time by 36 minutes in my second marathon by using Jeff's method. You might want to give it a try. Good luck!

I actually am a Galloway runner and think its a great program. I never had any issues with injury last year so it's tough to accept this time around. I still think it's a great method to avoid injury. Just didn't work out as well for me this time.

Probably not going to help, but, for previous posters having issues with knees, when was the last time you had your shoes looked at by someone who can tell if you have changed your plant pattern and thus might need a different shoe or even a new pair due to wearing them out.

For me, it will definitely be Sunday. Besides that working best for my schedule and family stuff, the forecast on that day is optimal for me. I would rather start out a bit colder, and wear a shirt I can tie around my waist when I warm up. My route keeps me in the sun for a good bit, especially since I anticipate being out there for about 4 hours (crossing my fingers!). Either way, I know we really can't complain about the temps we have, it's better than running in snow!::yes::

That's what I've decided on as well! Although I won't tie anything else around my waist--I hate my belt as it is!

As a contrarian, I think it possible - if I understand correctly. She ran a training run of 14 for the W&D and now wants to run the marathon. If that is the case, yes, she has more than enough time to get ready for the marathon. It may not be pretty and she may have a few race day issues to deal with, but yes it is possible. Now, if I read this as she only plans to run 14 as a long run and struggle around for the remaining 12 miles… Yikes! If she is in very good condition and is having no issue, then it is possible. Honestly, folks can and do run endurance activities with a longest training day approximating 50-60% of the race distance. It takes a good all round conditioning and a tough mental outlook to accomplish the day. It also requires that they start off the race at a pace that feels very slow. Really, how many folks run 50 miles in training for an ultra event?

I learned a long time ago that while I can counsel against doing something, I need to stand out of the way if they are not willing to listen. In getting out of the way, I try to bound options/plans to optimize their chances to have success. The human machine can and will consistently amaze one when given the chance and when powered by a strong will.

Okay--I'll tell her that she should be ok--she'll be happy to hear that!

I would reserve the large jumps for race weekend. I would suggest running 14 and calling it a day. Then expand the long runs up to 18-20 as the longest run and call it good.

I think she only wants to run 14-15 max and then walk the rest. I think she's probably already in bed so I can't tell her to stop at 14. As of today, her plan for tomorrow morning is run 15 and walk the next 3. Do you have any good strategies for mileage for the following weeks, mileage wise for the 2 weekday runs and then the long run for her?

I hope your 20 miler goes well! I'll be thinking of you!

Thank you!!! Same to you :)

I'm debating on which day to run. I'm a wimp--I don't like running in the cold. 60 is about perfect. I can't do colder. But then I don't like hotter than 70ish either! It's looking like the low on Saturday is 62 but high 81. I'll be out in the sun for probably 2 hours. So will I be too hot? Sunday the high is 69 but the low is 53. Is the low going to be too cold? I'm veering towards Sunday though

Monday looks even better..... Assuming you are off this week. This AM was really sticky - cool but sticky. Tomorrow the winds look to be up. I grew up in a windy part of the country and really hate running in a strong breeze.

Does anyone know if the first aid stations would have sunscreen? I'm wondering how I can reapply since I'll be out there for 5+ hours.

If anyone is interested, the Disney Store has the runDisney In Training hat for $13 and last year's (2013) marathon hat on sale for $12.

No, they do not. Honestly, since I am staying on the monorail, expect a really cold marathon weekend - so only your lips and cheeks will need attention.

Seriously, I find that a good sports sunscreen will stay in place for much if not all the race. If one needs a re-apply, it would be best to apply in DAK or WWoS in a real bathroom so you can see what you are doing. I use Blue Lizard as my screen of choice due to the high Zinc Oxide component. My old dermatologist recommended it to me a few years back so I would have century ride protection.

I wish I could do my long run in Monday, it does look perfect! I'm off, but home with the kiddos so that's a no go for me :(

I agree about the wind, it always seems to be coming right at me, no matter which direction I'm going! :) Im more nervous about the distance in general, but I plan to take my time and concentrate on the mileage. I think I can, I think I can!!! :)

You FL residents are hilarious ;)

I originally had to choose between a high of 47 and rain or dry and a high of 30 for my run this weekend. Keeping in mind that I would not be running during the high. Luckily the rain went away and I was able to do 16 today.

Not running the marathon in 2014, but following along and planning to run the full in 2015. Too funny, RnbwSktles! My run today was in 22 degrees with a windchill of 8!

I am off of teaching for the week, but I have to work at Disney. I'm hoping that for some reason, the wind will hold off until I'm done. The wind image on my weather app shows up at 9..which should be at my 8 mile mark :sad2:

I did 15 miles in 24 degree weather last week. Longest long run I've ever done, and the best. Real cold weather seems to really work well for me. Doing a half on Thanksgiving morning where it will be in upper 20s or lower 30s at the start.

While preparing for the 2012 Marathon, I did a 20 mile run with temps between 23-26 degrees. I would have preferred twice that. Good luck to everyone with their training no matter what your weather!

Might be a good idea to bundle way up and get that feeling for 70F temperatures just in case. We had the house air on just Thursday and yesterday was 80's.

I would much rather race in temps in the lower 40's; either actual or wind chill. For training, I am good with anything warmer than that for most runs, but loved it when I travelled north in my previous position to get a feel for layering. I actually think training on long runs in the 70's or higher creates a mental toughness that is not otherwise found. Running 3-4 hours under conditions that would have a cautionary flag flying in a race creates an expertise in hydrating, brings out a hidden issues like higher than electrolytic losses, cramping, chaffing and develops the tool set to help keep you moving when the brain says whoa.

We also have the AC on as I feel a cool breeze floating acorn the room.

OFF Topic... Went to Osborne last night and found the cat!!!!

Seems I started a "who had to run in the worst weather" debate :lmao:

I'm more worried about snow than temperature..I hope that holds off until after jan! The place I run will not get plowed and I hate the idea of having to find a safe spot on the roads to do 20 miles

Today I ran 18 miles in pretty windy weather. I started out when it was still just barely dark at about 60 degrees and by the time I was done it was only 64ish. Absolutely perfect. I don't want any colder! (coach--cough cough :) )

But today's run went well. I felt better throughout it than I did for last week's 17 miler. And my time for today's 18 miler was almost 10 minutes FASTER than the 17 miler last week! My knee and heel only hurt sporadically so that's good. Around mile 11, I got a weird pain on my second toe, all the way down to the ball of my foot in a line. No idea what that was. It lasted for a few miles then would come and go. It doesn't hurt now though. I ran 2:1 intervals the whole time without having to drop to more walking so I'm proud of that. But I was definitely done after 18. Really not sure how I'm supposed to do 8 more!!
