Hi, all,
I've hit a snag in my training and just wanted to whine about it here and see if anyone has additional advice. Training for my second marathon and all was well until a 17 mile training run several weeks back. After the run my right hip and knee started bothering me. Discomfort was minimal so I didn't adjust my training. 3 weeks ago I ran a local half marathon and the knee became bothersome and then ultimately quite painful by the end of the run. I've seen a trainer and a sports medicine person who both think my suspicion of IT band issues is correct. I'm rolling it twice a day and stretching and took a two week break from training but improvement is minimal. I ran an easy 4 miles on Tuesday and the pain flared right back up. We are scheduled for a 20 miler this weekend and I'm pretty sure I can't do that mileage right now.
So what to do? Do I just continue to lay off the running for another couple of weeks and then try again? Push through and just see what I can manage? I'm so frustrated and worried about being recovered by January.
I had the same problem that began when I hit 18 miles in training for my first marathon. Since then, I have adopted Jeff Galloway's run-walk-run method and have had no further IT band pain. I even improved my time by 36 minutes in my second marathon by using Jeff's method. You might want to give it a try. Good luck!
For me, it will definitely be Sunday. Besides that working best for my schedule and family stuff, the forecast on that day is optimal for me. I would rather start out a bit colder, and wear a shirt I can tie around my waist when I warm up. My route keeps me in the sun for a good bit, especially since I anticipate being out there for about 4 hours (crossing my fingers!). Either way, I know we really can't complain about the temps we have, it's better than running in snow!![]()
As a contrarian, I think it possible - if I understand correctly. She ran a training run of 14 for the W&D and now wants to run the marathon. If that is the case, yes, she has more than enough time to get ready for the marathon. It may not be pretty and she may have a few race day issues to deal with, but yes it is possible. Now, if I read this as she only plans to run 14 as a long run and struggle around for the remaining 12 miles Yikes! If she is in very good condition and is having no issue, then it is possible. Honestly, folks can and do run endurance activities with a longest training day approximating 50-60% of the race distance. It takes a good all round conditioning and a tough mental outlook to accomplish the day. It also requires that they start off the race at a pace that feels very slow. Really, how many folks run 50 miles in training for an ultra event?
I learned a long time ago that while I can counsel against doing something, I need to stand out of the way if they are not willing to listen. In getting out of the way, I try to bound options/plans to optimize their chances to have success. The human machine can and will consistently amaze one when given the chance and when powered by a strong will.
I would reserve the large jumps for race weekend. I would suggest running 14 and calling it a day. Then expand the long runs up to 18-20 as the longest run and call it good.
I hope your 20 miler goes well! I'll be thinking of you!
Thank you!!! Same to you
I'm debating on which day to run. I'm a wimp--I don't like running in the cold. 60 is about perfect. I can't do colder. But then I don't like hotter than 70ish either! It's looking like the low on Saturday is 62 but high 81. I'll be out in the sun for probably 2 hours. So will I be too hot? Sunday the high is 69 but the low is 53. Is the low going to be too cold? I'm veering towards Sunday though

Does anyone know if the first aid stations would have sunscreen? I'm wondering how I can reapply since I'll be out there for 5+ hours.
If anyone is interested, the Disney Store has the runDisney In Training hat for $13 and last year's (2013) marathon hat on sale for $12.
Monday looks even better..... Assuming you are off this week. This AM was really sticky - cool but sticky. Tomorrow the winds look to be up. I grew up in a windy part of the country and really hate running in a strong breeze.
You FL residents are hilarious
I originally had to choose between a high of 47 and rain or dry and a high of 30 for my run this weekend. Keeping in mind that I would not be running during the high. Luckily the rain went away and I was able to do 16 today.

I did 15 miles in 24 degree weather last week. Longest long run I've ever done, and the best. Real cold weather seems to really work well for me. Doing a half on Thanksgiving morning where it will be in upper 20s or lower 30s at the start.
While preparing for the 2012 Marathon, I did a 20 mile run with temps between 23-26 degrees. I would have preferred twice that. Good luck to everyone with their training no matter what your weather!
