OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

I did a quick search through this thread but couldn't find the answer, so apologies if this has already been talked about.

For those that have run in the past, what is usually offered at the food stops along the route? I'm trying to figure out what/how much i need to run with as i love my running snacks on long runs!

Thanks

It has been a little while, but I thought I would check back in and say hi :wave2: to everyone. I couldn't bring myself to sign up for Dopey (4 early mornings in a row coming from Colorado sounded more painful than the running!), so I'm looking forward to "just" running Goofy.

I ran 4 halves over the summer (including Dopey), and a full a few weeks ago. Looking forward to the enjoyment of the DW courses.

This has probably been covered repeatedly, but Coach, are you registered at a resort that won't trigger torturous heat again this year? How about a little cold if you are in charge of the weather.

I only use Clif Shot Bloks (Orange flavored) so I didn't partake of any of the offerings on the course last year, but I remember seeing Clif bars, various gels, and near the end of the race, just as you enter DHS, they were handing out mini candy bars. I'm pretty sure there was fruit on the course too, but I can't remember for sure.

A total of 21 Dasani water and PowerAde stops will be located along the course. All stops offer water and lemon-lime PowerAde. There will be four food stops located along the course. Chiquita bananas will be available at Mile 11.5 and Mile 18.3. Clif products will be distributed at Mile 15.4 and Mile 19.4. Sponges will be provided at Mile 17.1, and candy will be available at Mile 22.5.

Note that the water stops are ordered PowerAde then water.

Does anyone know if they accept either Disney gift cards or Magic Band as payment at the expo? The official Dis expo store of course, not the individual booths.
Yes I used gift cards at the expo with no problem, just for Disney merchandise. :thumbsup2

Hey everyone!!!! :wave2:

I've been MIA for a while (lots going on over the summer, and just did the W&D weekend, 5K and Half)... happy to see that everyone's training is going well!

Dealt with some peroneal tendonitis a few weeks before the W&D... took 2 weeks off and missed an 18-mile training run. I had my ankle taped at the KT booth at the Expo as a precaution, and it felt great! Hopefully that is behind me :)

Did a TOUGH 10 miler this weekend. Not sure why, but my legs felt like bricks the whole time. I've got a 20 miler this weekend, and I'm pretty nervous about it.

I know my only goal should be to finish, as this is my first marathon, and it's at Disney! I'm slowly accepting that I just have to give it my best, no matter what, and be happy with the results. But the competitive devil on my shoulder is making that difficult

Anyway, thanks for listening... I can't believe it's less than 2 months away!!!!

Mile 15 is the M&M McFlurry stop at McD's. :rotfl: Just a slight downhill, across the intersection, back across the intersection then a wicked uphill cambered turn back to the course, unless one wants to walk up the overpass embankment next to McD's.

McFlurry John plus a beer at EPCOT

p.s.-passed a few really nice places for a beer at IMFL, but noooooo, not allowed, so I will make up for it during the Mickey.

If I recall, there was a DQ on the bike route that smelled so dang good.

Can't wait. My mileage will finally be back in the 40's in two weeks. I feel like a wrestler trying to cut weight. The real question is what delectable treats will help me put it back on in disney.

Last week was a rough week for me. I had 6 mile run on Wednesday. The whole time I was running, I was thinking about how hard it was. I don't know if it was because I had 2 days of softball tourney right before, or if it was because it was cold (for FL) and super windy, and because I was actually wearing long sleeves and pants. But I hated the whole thing. The 15 miler 2 weekends before was easier. When I got out of the shower, I started feeling sick. I'm not sure if it was from the run or if I caught something from my Kindergarteners and it just happened to rear its head then. But it was rough. I know that every runner has bad runs so I shook it off.

Then Sunday I had my 17 miler. I was done at mile 7. My legs just hurt. My knee and heel pain were back full force (just when I thought they were gone) and I was just over it. I normally do 2:1s. At mile 13, I dropped to 1:1s. At mile 14, I dropped to 1:2s and at mile 15 I dropped to straight walking and walked the last 2 miles (which was incredibly painful both physically and mentally).

So I'm having so many doubts right now. How am I really going to do another 9 miles? I'm so frustrated and frankly, scared of my 18 miler this weekend.

(oh--and another note. My running buddy who I run Disney halfs with decided she's now going to run the full. She trained for the W&D using the Galloway program but only got up to 14 miles with a long run every other week and only doing 3 miles & 4 miles during the week. I told her that I didn't think it was wise but she thinks she's going to run half of it then walk the second half. I'm not sure talking her out of it will be good for our friendship so anyone have any advice I can give her to help her out and she can be successful?)

Decide what you want. I really love speedwork and meeting with my coach and friends "under the lights" at the track on Wednesdays. I'm not willing to trade this in for B2B training runs other runners swear by for Dopey prep. My goal is to not only enjoy marathon weekend but the process. I don't think I'll ever run a marathon focusing on time but darn if I'm not going to get my 1/2 under 2 again post-baby. You have the power to decide your focus and a whole community here to support you.

Thank you so much! I enjoyed my speed work when training for NYC. I'm still struggling with some post-marathon blues but starting to get focused again for WDW in January. I didn't want to do Dopey this time around and I'm not sure I'll ever want to do Dopey. Anniversary Goofy is another can of worms… :rotfl2:
I would love to eventually run a sub-2 hour half. Not sure I ever will but it's on my list. :thumbsup2

I'm in the same boat as you... all I keep telling myself is that I have to have some bad runs to appreciate the good ones. My 10 miler this past weekend was brutal from the first step. I'm very nervous about my 20 miles coming up on Sunday.

I'm going to do my best to go into this weekend's run with a positive attitude, and put in the miles, however I do it. It may not be pretty, but I'm really hoping that it goes better than this last weekend.

I thought about skipping my Friday run (only 3 miles), to help rest my legs a little... maybe that will help? Here's to this FL weather being cooperative this weekend as well!!!

Is she planning on increasing her long runs or is 14 miles where she wants to stop? She still has time to get up to 18-20 miles before the marathon. That's almost where I am now.

I am using Galloway as well, but I fell behind when I took 3 weeks off to nurse some knee pain, and then paused my training while I did 3 half-marathons in 5 weeks. I am planning on 16 miles this weekend. I also have added to the mid-week runs that Galloway suggests. Instead of 30-45 minutes, I do 5 miles and occasionally some hill work.

I hope your 20 miler goes well! I'll be thinking of you!

I'm debating on which day to run. I'm a wimp--I don't like running in the cold. 60 is about perfect. I can't do colder. But then I don't like hotter than 70ish either! It's looking like the low on Saturday is 62 but high 81. I'll be out in the sun for probably 2 hours. So will I be too hot? Sunday the high is 69 but the low is 53. Is the low going to be too cold? I'm veering towards Sunday though

The last time we talked about it, she planned on running 14 and walking 4 more. She's talking like she wants to do what I'm doing but I've been training 10 extra weeks. I'm not sure it's smart to suddenly jump to my 18 miles and then the 5 and 8 during the week instead of 3 and 4. But I'm not sure what to tell her to do.

For me, it will definitely be Sunday. Besides that working best for my schedule and family stuff, the forecast on that day is optimal for me. I would rather start out a bit colder, and wear a shirt I can tie around my waist when I warm up. My route keeps me in the sun for a good bit, especially since I anticipate being out there for about 4 hours (crossing my fingers!). Either way, I know we really can't complain about the temps we have, it's better than running in snow!::yes::

As a contrarian, I think it possible - if I understand correctly. She ran a training run of 14 for the W&D and now wants to run the marathon. If that is the case, yes, she has more than enough time to get ready for the marathon. It may not be pretty and she may have a few race day issues to deal with, but yes it is possible. Now, if I read this as she only plans to run 14 as a long run and struggle around for the remaining 12 miles… Yikes! If she is in very good condition and is having no issue, then it is possible. Honestly, folks can and do run endurance activities with a longest training day approximating 50-60% of the race distance. It takes a good all round conditioning and a tough mental outlook to accomplish the day. It also requires that they start off the race at a pace that feels very slow. Really, how many folks run 50 miles in training for an ultra event?

I learned a long time ago that while I can counsel against doing something, I need to stand out of the way if they are not willing to listen. In getting out of the way, I try to bound options/plans to optimize their chances to have success. The human machine can and will consistently amaze one when given the chance and when powered by a strong will.

I realize you are a coach, but suggesting that someone can go from half marathon to marathon in the next 4 weeks (leaving in a 3 week taper) is ridiculous.

I would reserve the large jumps for race weekend. I would suggest running 14 and calling it a day. Then expand the long runs up to 18-20 as the longest run and call it good.

A three week taper seems a little ridiculous. Everything I have read and seen does a taper is also supposed to be very active. Lots of shorter more intense intervals . It's worked well for me
