Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

We will be at Disney (Staying a BLT) for my sons' birthday. I would love to do this race. I have never done a 1/2 marathon before. The farthest I have done is a 10k. Do you think I have enough time to train to the point that I will still be able to take them to the parks the next day, which is their birthday? Or will I most likely be too sore the next day?

Agreeing with what previous posters have mentioned, I also think you could accomplish all that you desire. A 10K completion is excellent background and with the proper dedicated training the Parks after will be fun. My thinking is as long as you don't attempt to burn up the course you will have a good recovery for walking the Parks.

Caution, those 2 little guys might cause you to move faster than during the race so maybe you should be training for that! :thumbsup2

Good luck and enjoy!

Is there not a Pasta in the Park this year or did I miss seeing registration?

This will be my 1st half. Trying to figure out our dining. I have reservations made but not sure how we can work them with the race.

Also, is there anyone who just did Jeff Galloway's "to finish in an upright position plan" that can tell me how it worked out for them. How did you feel the next day or two as well?

Thanks!!!

My husband and I did our very first half marathon at the Tink last year - beforehand we had only done one 5K. All we did to train was follow the Jeff Galloway training - two 30 minute runs during the week and one long run on the weekend. Every other week it is 3 miles, the others slowly get further and further. towards the end life was life and we were scrambling to do the runs, but we were able to finish the race by doing run walk run and were fine for the parks the next day and even that afternoon. We slept VERY well that night though! :rotfl:

JG's plan for the W+D doesn't start until early July, so you are ahead of the curve we were at! :thumbsup2

Edited to mention: My husband also developed a rash on both legs immediately after that lasted a full day and was worrisome. The only thing we did differently was that I wore compression socks during and after the race, whereas he did not. We will NOT miss training runs this time, even if he ultimately blamed the rubbing of his shorts!

I haven't seen it posted in this thread yet, but they posted a picture of the design for the participant shirt on facebook last evening.

Not sure if this link will work directly, but if you find RunDisney on facebook, it is currently the first picture found in their Wall Photos album.

[edit:] I can't post links yet, so someone else might need to post a link or just go to facebook as described above

How's that?

That's good to know. I have been running inconsistently for almost a year now. I have done 2 5ks (followed c25k, walked only 3 mins in the last one) and have a 10k on 9/15. I will look into compression socks. Thanks!!

Would like to join this thread as I just registered:goodvibes. This will be my first RunDisney event other than Marathon weekend in January so I am super excited. I am running NYC Marathon the weekend before so I am not sure how my legs will be, it will either be a super fast race or a disaster:rotfl:. I am up for either.
One quick question - I am thinking of staying at the Swan or Dolphin and walking over to Boardwalk for the bus for the start and walking back to the room after the race. Is there a better option? I have never stayed at either resort.

That's probably your best option. Swan and Dolphin is right beside the Boardwalk and I dont recall them asking us for resort validation to get on the busses.

I stayed at the Dolphin last year and zero issues getting the busses at the Boardwalk. :thumbsup2

I'm staying there again this year - or is it the Swan this time? I can't remember.

This is my first half marathon plus my first Disney race. Big day!

Is it really that much better to stay at the host resorts in terms of transportation? I was looking at saving some money at staying at one of the Downtown Disney spots, but am really nervous about logistics.

I am staying at a non host resort AoA. I have read several reviews from prior races and often read about racers staying at host resorts taking taxis to avoid the long bus lines. So as long as you're okay with taxis you should be fine. You could also take a bus from a host resort to WWoS but seems like a lot of extra transportation to save a few bucks to me.:confused3

My husband and I are doing the half this year. It will be our first half marathon.
We are doing many 5ks + 1 10k and 1 warrior dash this summer. So hopefully we will be in good shape by November.
I have many questions but am going to now scroll through the past 20 pages to see what I can figure out.
Have always loved the dis boards on our past disney trips and am super excited to have found this one!!

btw- we are staying at Boardwalk arriving Friday the 9th until the 16th.
Love free dining, and love Food and wine festival.

Thanks for posting the course map Suited Deuces. I am not sure if this varies from last year's course, since this is the first time for this event, but it looks like a fun one. I am particularly looking forward to the run through Hollywood Studios (at night).

I think they just removed the relay point from last year (when there was a relay)....but I like the Insets of the routes thru the parks

Very neat to see the map. I didn't realize we'd run through Epcot, thought you just finished outside. A bit confused as to how the after party works. Runners will be running across Future World and by Soarin. How do party goers get to attractions?

They have cast members who move the course ever so slightly to the left and right with a rope allowing spectators to pass. I didn't notice it while running, but when we walked back through Epcot after the princess I saw it.

Granted, I was catatonic at the end last year and only focused on how much my knees hurt (itbs), but neither Mike or I remember running through Epcot last year and I know we didn't the first year. So, I could be wrong, but I believe that is new.:goodvibes That's really nice cause the last 1/4 mile or so of that course stunk and was dark and unending!

The course map from last year looks like no finish through Epcot.
