Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

:wave2:

Well, 2 more weeks. This will be my very first (and possibly only) half marathon. It's on my bucket list and 2 other friends are doing the Wine and Dine so I thought "Why not?". I mean, if I am going to do this I might as well do it Disney style :thumbsup2

Basically, I am doing it to finish - I have maintained a fairly good time while training so I am not going to stress. As long as I cross the finish line, I have succeeded. It just sounds like fun and I can't wait!

My only concern is I recently may have pulled something in my hip which has made it painful to run. It's either a pinched nerve or a muscle. I smell of peppermint trying to rub it away, so keeping fingers crossed I can still do this!

Good luck to everyone :cheer2:

So true!! It may have been 5 years since my last one, but I'm already trying to figure out when I'll be ready to do another or even.....dare I say it....a full??:scared1: And it IS only about finishing. Joan Benoit Samuelson I'm definitely not!:rotfl2:

I had two of the worst experiences at my first two half marathons, due to really awful ITBS that made miles 11-13 extremely painful both times, and both times, 24 hours later, I was like, “Yeah, I can totally do that again.”

Hope you are feeling better soon.

agree! I have never been a sporty, athletic, or exercise type person. I started jogging about 5 years ago and did a few 5Ks which were ok. I registered for a 5K with a friend, who registered for the same event but the half marathon portion- well she got sick and on a whim (I still don't know what possesed me) I took her bib and ran the 13.1. What a rush! I was hooked, now I run 2-3 per year. This will be my 7th half and my 8th will be 2 weeks later :)

I totally get that! Lol

It happens at marathons, too. I cried for like 6 miles of the Disney marathon in January, especially when it started to get really hot (I live in NYC) and sunny. About ten minutes after I finished I had already decided to do another. I’m signed up for #2 and #3 in January and March.

January and March??!!?? :scared1: It took me a month after my first half to start feeling human again and another month before my runs starting feeling productive and not like I was being dragged behind a bus!:hyper: Kudos to you!:cool1:

January (Disney) is my goal race. March is just a back-up in case something goes horribly wrong at Disney. Plus, I liked the idea of running my 3rd marathon on my 33rd birthday.

Well, seeing as where you live, if you're running it up there, I hope you still can. Looks like Sandy is on her way to you!:furious: Stay safe!:goodvibes

About long runs, I did the Adirondack half last month with a longest running on 9 miles in 2:09 two weeks prior. I always felt if I could get to 9 or 10 I could finish under 3:30.

Finished the Adirondack in 3:08, and I walked the last 6 miles cause it was totally up hill.

Felt good for the most part but the majority of my soreness was from walking quickly uphill! I learned walking isn't ad easy as it appeared to be.

Other than that one race I've never trained longer than 9 miles.

Good luck everyone with their last long runs this weekend!

What the heck...I wanted decent running temps, but it is COLD outside! About 38 degrees right now with the wind chill in the upper 20s. Just a few days ago I was at the zoo with DH and our kids in mid 80 degree temps!

You're a little ahead of yourself! We're 2 weeks out.

Most training plans call for the longest training run 2 weeks out from the race so that you're body has time to recover & build to put you in "peak" condition by race day.

I still haven't decided how far I'll run next weekend - 7miles probably. What is everyone else planning on doing for their taper week long run?

This is encouraging, thank you! :yay: I'm not TOO concerned about the time as it's my first Disney event and i just want to soak it all in. As long as I'm way ahead of the sweeping storm troopers, I'll be a happy camper.:goodvibes

There’s no reason, even for a beginner to taper for a half. Your longest run should be the Sunday before the race. Even novice plans say this.

It depends on whose plan you are using. I have seen a few plans where the longest run is two weeks out and then it tapers. Like several others, I am using Jeff Galloway's plan, and he has the week before the race at 5 miles.

Did my 11 mile run today at a 10:15 pace. Up to 12 miles next Friday, and then I taper off for the week leading up to the race. Where I run has quite a few hills, so I think I have trained quite well.

Set a goal to finish my first half in 2:30 or less, and I am well on my way to doing that I think.

Goodness, it's going down into the 30's here next week. I'd like more of these mild temps for a while longer. Did any of you see the lows for Orlando next week? 55 Sun. night and 48 Mon. and Tues. nights according to my phone. I so want it to be in the 60's when we run.

Whatever the Galloway plan calls for. Can't remember off hand. Was it 5 or 7 next week??? How far are you going this weekend? I'm doing Galloway, but not going to 14. Was thinking 13, but now thinking 10 should be fine. (I hope.)

Well, I'm running 10 or 11 (hoping for 11, but I'm not sure yet) and then I'm "tapering." (Does my annual start of holiday shopping excursion this weekend count for mileage?) Yes, it's not ideal or super agressive but I'm not aiming for a super fast race either. I'll be ecstatic if I can do the 10 after having to build up all over again this month.

10, 11, 14, 7 - whatever you're planning - ENJOY it and hopefully get through it uninjured! pixiedust: Wine and Dine is almost here!:cheer2:
