Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

All the 5k's at Disney are unofficial. I believe there are clocks on the course but no chips.

Thanks, I should have noticed that when I registered him. I just told him and he said it's okay bc he can perhaps enjoy the race more than his average 5k. I had already warned him to expect a crowd of people.

It's going to be such a fun weekend. I can't wait! My DDs are doing the 1 mi kids race, my DH is doing the 5k, and I'm set for the 1/2. Then we get to head out on a cruise the next day! :cool1:

Our weather here has been great for running, high 50s low 60s. However, the other day I went for a run on a rain off/on day and ended up being poured on for about 3 minutes during the run. It actually felt good and my shoes didn't get too wet. Must have been moving so fast they dried immediately... ;)

Ok maybe this is obvious to some...but I just want to be prepared.

I am looking at the finish line area of the map, and it shows bleachers by the finish line in the Imagine lot. Since it is not actually in Epcot, would I be correct in assuming that spectators can access that area without the need of a party ticket?

I'm getting nervous that I'm the only one who didn't follow the advice to do some long runs/walks in the dark.

How did it go for others who did the same in the past or for ToT?

Also, I can't seem to find the link for the poster from lasting commemoratives. I registered and have my voucher but I would like to give the info to my friend so she can also get one. I tried to search the thread and couldn't find it.

TIA

It’s not necessarily about doing a long run in the dark. The race course is well lit. It’s training after a full day of activity. It’s pretty hard to even replicate it at home because Disney is so much busier than even living in Manhattan. You want to do at least one long run while you’re extremely tired.

Ok fellow W&D runners... I'm in need of some last minute advice. I finally got my last test results back and I'm fine and allowed to run the race. Which is good because I've been running again earnestly these last two weeks! But I feel like I've fallen behind where I had planned to be. I've gotten my pace back, but it's not as "easy" as it was in September. I want to be able to finish and preferably strong (but not necessarily super fast or anything) so I'd appreciate some input on the rest of my training.

I was faithfully following Galloways plan and schedule up to the 11 mile run last month. Then I had to scale back to just one or two 4 mile runs for 2 weeks until last monday, when I did a 5 miler with two more 4 milers that week. This monday I did 8.2 and will do two more 4ish milers. At least one of those each week has some major hills and I'm feeling stronger for it. I have a 10 or 11 miler planned for next monday and then i was going to taper until the race, by doing 4 mile runs every other/every few days.

I really had wanted to stay with Galloway's 12.5 mile run, and then I was just going to repeat the 10 or 11 miler (I really didn't want to go to 14) but obviously I didn't make it to 12.5. Anyone have any ideas of anything else I should be doing? I was thinking of adding a walking day to add some mileage. I usually do two days of cross training which are basically plyo strength moves and upper body weights and core all of which I have to do as physical therapy for and old knee injury and neck issues.

Thanks!

You're not the only one. I haven't done any night runs. I'm used to staying up late, but not running after 10 pm. I don't feel safe running by myself late at night. I might try a 3 miler on our treadmill, but otherwise I'm just going to wing it.

Can anyone who has received the RunDisney emails with race info please tell me the email address the emails come from. I've written to RunDisney but their response was to ask for a different email address. And I don't have another, so I just want to make sure I have all possible senders added to my safe list.

Oh Figs, I am SO in the same boat! :sad2: I got to the 11 mile week when my knee whacked out on me and I had to stop running completely for 2 weeks. I kept active on the elliptical but it's hardly the same. I've gotten back up to 7 and am planning on doing around 9 this week then tapering down again. I've done a half before (5 years ago:crazy2:) but I'm not too concerned about the distance. Like you though, I wonder if I should be doing anything different. Suggestions experienced W.I.S.H.'rs??:confused3

The email address it was sent from was rundisney@email.mydisneyparks.com. :thumbsup2

Figment 1990, I think if you're able to do 10 or 11 then you'll be able to make the 13 on race night. :) With the race energy and excitement, it will carry you through. At least that's what I'm thinking! I'm doing Galloway too. Not doing 14 this weekend. Was planning on 13, but am now thinking more along 10 this weekend. I see no need in doing 13 this weekend, and then another 13 in two more weeks. I hope I'm not making a mistake, but that's the game plan. Listen to your body and listen to your gut and you'll do what's right for you. :yay:

FWIW, we got back from WDW Monday night, and I thought it was cool in the evenings. Bordering on chilly. We ran the first two w&d races, and if the temps are similar to last week, it should be a great race--so much cooler than the first two. Definitely pack sweatshirts in your gear bag. I will probably even pack dry shorts, cause I know I can't dry my hair and that alone will keep me chilly.:goodvibes

I never set out to run in the dark, it just happened to get dark while I was out for a run back in August. I hated it, so I have no plans to repeat it before the W&D... plus the safety thing guarantees I won't be out at night 'til I'm safe and secure on a runDisney course! I am a little worried about it being late at night, what with marathon training and a new job I have the bedtime habits of an 90 year old woman nowadays, but I'll be up late the night before (my flight doesn't land til midnight) so hopefully I can just keep myself on that schedule... I think the excitement and lure of the extra coast to coast medal will keep me alert, though.

And yesterday I got a passholder fantasyland preview set up for that Monday morning!!

Not that I planned it this way, but I'm doing a 5k event called Run Like Hell tomorrow night. So, I guess I will be getting an after dark run after all.

I'm not an experienced racer but I was checking with my friends who do multiple halfs every year. They rarely do more than 12m as their longest run. They thought it was unnecessary to do runs as long as the Galloway plan suggested and said they certainly wouldn't go 14m before a half. Based on their advice, I've scaled back and plan to do 13 this weekend. Their opinion is that Galloways longest runs are more about building confidence & you can be prepared without doing runs that long.

Over the summer, I ran once my kids were in bed. It was 8pm and the sun wasn't setting until around 9, so I was good. Plus, the park I run in always had a men's soccer team practicing, so I was able to watch a game while running...and it made me feel a heck of a lot safer since I was used to seeing all them and they were used to seeing me. Now that it starts getting dark around 7pm, I cut out my evening runs and do the mornings or afternoons (depending on what time DH has to go in to work or gets off). I just don't feel comfortable running outside on my own in the dark. I am glad I got in those evening runs while I had the chance so I know how my body does with them. No more for me until the actual race. Safety is way more important!

We can all wing it together then because I haven't done any night runs either. Like previously mentioned, I just don't feel safe running that late even though I am in a safe neighborhood. I'm sure we'll all be fine running off the adrenaline!:yay:

Thanks so much for the advice!:goodvibes Since we're only 2 weeks out, I'll shoot for 9 this weekend, 4-5 a couple of times next week and probably keep it around 5 next weekend. A couple nights of slow, easy 45 minute runs the week sound good to everyone? I figured the day before, we'll just do a slow easy 2-3 mile jog just to keep loose.:confused3 Any and all opinions are appreciated!::yes::::yes::

Was looking at the map on runDisney. Did the course change? Does it now end by going through Epcot? I thought the earlier map showed it ending outside.

What were previous years? I prefer to go through Epcot, nice suprise.

Second question, I notice on the after party map it shows an engraving station for medals. I am almost afraid to ask, but how much do they charge for that and how long is the wait usually?
