Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

I love SPIbelt. I currently use the one with the Minnie print. It’s cute and works well for me. I usually carry 3-4 gels, my phone, and keys.

I find that interesting based on human biology.

Also I love the about running page and find their "expert" helpful and had read this article: http://running.about.com/od/injuryrecovery/f/icebathorhottub.htm

I guess to each their own. I was just trying to give some ideas to someone who was mentioning a problem.

It is helpful to me when I've done it. I don't use that much ice, it's more of a cool bath. I keep a sweatshirt on and sometimes my shorts too. I get in the tub without water and then fill with cold tap water. I've brought a couple of trays of ice cubes and added them after the water is over my legs. After I sit in the cold water for 10-15 minutes, I take my regular warm shower.

I agree with this.

For acute injuries, where inflammation or swelling occurs, ice is the way to go because it reduces the swelling and/or inflammation. Since running is a big proponent of acute injuries, ice (or at least a cool bath) is typically the best option. Ice is also recommended even if the injury is chronic if the pain increases due to inflammation. Runner's knee would be an example.

Heat is best applied to chronic injuries in which there is no inflammation and/or swelling. This allows the muscles to relax. Because heat increases blood circulation and raises skin temperature, it should not be used for any injury which has inflammation or swelling, and is not typically recommended after a workout.

Had to learn the difference between the two since I was a competitive dancer growing up (acute), and I have endometriosis (chronic).

I've always heard the cooler temps are better for muscle recovery, but I'm ALL for the heat! I did just recently read that taking a regular bath in epsom salts is supposed to be helpful for sore muscles. Bought the stuff but haven't tried it out yet, maybe tonight. I've also been applying arnica ointment on both my knees everyday hoping that will help too. I know the stuff works great on bruises, but we'll see how it goes with the knee arthritis.:confused3

I think it would be a blast to meet up with everyone before the start! :grouphug: I'll probably be the only "patriotic princess" with a blinky tiara, blinkie hair ribbon thingie, blue arm wraps, and American flag leg wraps. Oops! How could I forget the red Team Sparkle skirt!!:cheer2: I'm starting in the "Turnpike Tundra" corral aka "Lost in Space" corral aka "Where the Heck is the Actual Starting Line?" corral...:rotfl2:

I'll be driving up from south Florida Thursday night with the hubby in tow:drive:. We'll also have a cheering section of my brother from the FL west coast and friends who live about 30 mins. away from the Mouse. I think the only reason they agreed to come was the lure of the after party!party::dance3:

Hi everyone,

Myself and a few other friends are supporting our one friend at the race. We are all spectators & have tickets for the after party.

What we'd like to do is cheer our runner at a place on the route & hold up posters for her to see. Does anyone know of a good place along the route for this?

Thanks!

It is not a very spectator friendly race. You can show up at the start at WWOS and/or the very end outside Epcot. But there isn't anything along the route itself (well, that is designated for spectators). Although you could probably go along the route between DHS and Epcot...I think someone here posted about a couple friends doing that.

I love my spibelt and actually wear two! One for my phone (with headphones) , this I wear on my back and the other on my hip with spare hair band, chapstick and gels.

I'm too afraid of dropping my phone while fumbling for my gels or chapstick.

About spectators --- perhaps along the route near Dolphin/Yacht and Beach Club?

There is nothing wrong with an outfit that would be right at home in the American pavillion. If we pass on the course, I will be sure to salute you as you go by.

I carry an ifitness belt with two pockets. This allows me to go for my phone without worrying about dumping everything else out of that section. :)

I have an appt. with a spine clinic on Thursday for my ongoing back/hamstring issues (that resurfaced last week, yay). Please send happy thoughts. Even if they tell me no running, I'm going to be at this race so long as I can walk! Ran 10 yesterday with no real problems but the low back/right leg is screaming now. *sigh*

Tylenol and an ice bath work wonders for me!

My Wine & Dine shirt finally got here.

Any foods I should avoid before the run? I was thinking of having a bison burger for lunch around 1pm at the Wave

I have had back/hamstring problems also. I found out that something like 80% of all lower back problems is caused by tight hamstrings, which run up into the back. I have learned that good hamstring stretches takes care of this. I stretch mine religiously now, once before and twice after each run.

I went for my Monday run and my legs and ankles said no way, so it turned into a 3 mile walk which I was ok with. I'll gladly go slower during the week to rock it out on Saturdays run.

Would love to meet up at WWOS since we 'll be there so early, who knows the best time and place?

I Would love to meet you super-nice folks at wwos too. Traveling down from eastern Canada (right next door to Maine) with one of my closest friends & my mom as my cheering section.

Not sure how other groups plan the meet up, but I think we can just all head towards the flashing, sparkling patriotic princess. Lol

I'll be in a Minnie costume as well. Red Minnie sparkletech skirt, black shirt & Minnie ears headband & a giant nervous grin :-)

Well I made it through my "long run" last night. 8 miles. All I can say is that it was so much harder than it should have been at this point. And much harder than it was amonth ago. I can definitely feel that my legs aren't as strong as they were in August and September. Hopefully I can keep building up my strength in the next weeks including my last long run next weekend. Otherwise I might be crawling across that finish line.

Injuries that sideline your last month of training aren't fun!!!! Good luck to everyone dealing with setbacks (and those who aren't too!)

All of you who know what you're wearing are a good reminder that I need to figure out what I'm going to wear. Decided against a skirt outfit. I just want to be comfortable. I know on my run last week my sports bra and iPod holder ended up giving me bad chafing. Guess I better make my final decision and practice my long run in it this weekend.

One flashing, blinking, patriotic princess in Corral F, as in "Where in the Fog is the Actual Start Line?" at your service! :hyper:

LOVE the shirt Mash!!:banana::cool1:

We plan on getting there as late as possible to minimize wait time. If our cheering section heads over to the start with us, does anyone when they will be able to hop the bus back to Epcot? Will it be after the last runners start and the storm troopers:rotfl: show up?

The ToT folks did their WISH meet at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night at the Information Booth. At our start area it looks like there are two sides to the information booth -- one on the outside where other people as well as runners are allowed and another inside where only runners are allowed. I suggest that we meet on the inside so we don't get stuck in a bottleneck outside when it is time to head to the corrals.

I will be wearing my WISH shirt and I'm sure there are some other folks who will be doing the same so it won't be too hard to find us. :cool2:

Here is a picture of my outfit

Amy, love your shirt! :cool2:

I do have an iFitness belt that I really like. It holds everything I needed and had small water bottles you could attach. There is a discount coupon in our W&D "bag" for them. They are usually at the Expo and you can try them on. Unfortunately on long runs the belt, any belt, caused some runners tummy issues so now I rely on my sparkleskirt and it's voluminous pockets.

For those of you who have done this race before, do you know where the sweep points are usually? I'm thinking one around AK and maybe another before DHS. Are you safe once you make it into DHS or has anyone heard of anyone being swept on the Boardwalk part of the race?

Our race will be here before we know it! :yay:
