Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

Well, called midwife today, and she didn't say no to the race. Just said she wasn't sure if my body would tolerate it. She was open to either way. Everyone's different. So I'm just gonna keep at it, and if my body shows any red flags, I'll take it from there.

Training is going fine here. My long run last week was 6. Coming up is: 7,8,9,10,11,12,8,W&D!

I am prone to injuries so I'm trying very hard to train smart and not flare anything up. Today, at this moment, I am great. Lol But who knows what my next run holds...knock on wood. I am always cautiously optimistic!

Keep up the great training everyone, less than 8 weeks to go! :)

krisnchris - Congrats on the news!!!! So, you are going to continue training? How far will you be October 1? Hope you can make it!!

I did 9.5 miles (run/walk) last night with a neighbor who doesn't go as far. I ended up walking the 2 middle miles with her but was still able to finish just under 16 minute miles. I think I go up to 11 this coming weekend.

How is everyone else doing?

I can't believe how close it is!!!

I signed up for the half marathon as an incentive to get in shape and keep up my walking regimen....
Well, right in the middle of training, I hurt my foot badly and was diagnosed with plantar fiscitis and told not to walk on it......
I finally got the clearance to begin walking on it again to train, but I don't think I will be ready in time.
I already have registered for the race, booked a flight, etc....

I am trying to stay positive, but dont know my options..

Should I just start the race and see how far I can go? ( I mean I already paid for it.......)

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

If it was me I would still at least give it a try. It sounds like you have everything booked so why waste a trip? You still have almost 8 weeks to train so who knows you might make it just fine. Maybe once you get started in the race the sheer excitment of it all might carry you to the finish!!!

I am not so quick to say go for it...

How far along in training were you pre-injury? If you were in the 6-8 mile range great news. If in the 3-4 mile long run range, I would urge caution.

Next, what are your care provider's thoughts? What are their back ground... i.e. do they run or were you at a sports injury care provider? If no, can you get a second opinion from a provider who does have a sports view? A sports oriented provider will be looking to get you back in the race where one who does not have that slant is just looking to get you well and off the books.

I would counsel go forward ONLY if you are feeling well. If you can get your long run up to 6-8 miles at least a couple weeks pre-race then you have a great chance for successfully making it through the race. If you are fighting pain and can only get up to 3-5 miles in your longest run, then I would counsel waiting for a better year.

Probably not the exact answer you were looking for. You can get there but you really need to go with caution as you move forward on this one.

Okay, see my post on Thursday...

I've rolled. I've stretched. I haven't run for three days. It still feels like deep muscle cramp. Or something right about where the Achilles attaches to the calf muscle.

Will it be stupid to give a slow run a try on Monday morning? :confused3

Well Monday passed did you get out for a run?

Hopefully if you did all went well and you hardly remember your issue.

If the pain is still there, you should look at getting a hands on evaluation of the area. The Achilles tendon has two attachment points. The primary one where most tears occur is on the back of the heal. The other is the insertion point in the calf - just where you describe. It rarely tears at the upper insertion point but it can become a chronic injury. I would look at getting a deep muscle massage to break up any scarring that may be in the area and take another few days off.

I agree with you in being carefull with the injury and taking caution in proceding with the race. I was just suggesting still take the trip to enjoy the parks since the plans have already been made but see where 8 weeks can get you in your training. But yeah the last thing you want to do is push yourself to hard while healing.

This referred to last Monday, 1 August.

Bad news, Coach. I went for that run. A slow 5 miler. Slow. It felt a little tight, but not extreme. Then at 4.94 miles into the 5.00 mile run, something popped down there. And I limped home. This is what you get when you have a very high tolerance for pain. ;)

My GP sent me straight to a sports ortho specialist, who x-rayed it, then dug his fingers into my calf and diagnosed it as "calf strain", but not "severe calf strain" (his words). Exactly what you describe above, Coach - it's strained at the point where the Achilles' attaches to the top, not the heal.

So he's had me wearing "the boot", one of those big black ones that constrains all movement. This stops me from firing the tendon every time I step. So I have no pain whatsoever, but I'm also in a huge boot. When I massage my calf, I feel no tender spots at all anymore, so I think the treatment is effective. I go back to see him this Thursday. I'll continue to wear the boot until the Doc clears me for the next step, even though I don't think I need to wear it anymore. Sounds like he plans for me to move to the elliptical machine and the stationary bike next. He wouldn't discuss my running plans yet. One step at a time with him. And I'm okay with that. No disillusions that way.

My fantasy? I'm hoping that since I got an 8-miler in before all this happened that I'll be able to get in maybe one or two more long runs in September (10 and 12 miles) so I can get through the W&D Half. That's my goal. But I know that I need to be realistic, too. Injuries are just that. Injuries. And you need to get through them THOROUGHLY before moving forward.

Thanks for your Internet diagnosis, Coach, albeit a bit delayed. :)

Hi there,

I am in the EXACT same boat as you (and its really NOT a fun boat to be in, huh?). My problem has been diagnosed as "heel spur syndrome", kind of an offshoot of plantar fasciitis... heel pain all day long, its ridiculous. Stalled my training nearly completely for about 6 weeks. I finally went to the doctor last Friday to get a firm diagnosis, and she did say that it was OK to continue to train so long as I listen to my body and stop when it says "STOP". My plan is to get in as much training as my body can tolerate, and then just go for it, know I will most definitely be having to either quit part way through or I'll be so slow the sweepers will get me (I'm a walker, as well, usually good for about a 15 min pace). But I've got a lot of money invested in this, and my sister is doing it with me, so I'm not willing to just back out. I figure I've already paid, so who cares if I get out there and only make it 4, 5, 6, or more miles.

Would love to cheer you on as we struggle together... keep us posted on your progress!! I'm sorry your dealing with this too, but their is that old saying "misery loves company"

Hi....
How ironic. I signed up to do this with my sister too!!! I thought the same thing. Just go and do it!! See how far I get or get "swept". We are flying in from ny and staying from thurs to Sunday. I plan on making the most of this situation. So...... I'm a little embarrassed if I get swept. Does this happen to a lot of people? I'm envisioning sirens and a bull horn with someone asking me to please remove myself from the race... Lol

Yes!! I will definitely cheer you on! I have determined that plantar fiscitis is Latin for extreme pain.
Good luck!

Kris - What great news! I have done some reading about running while pregnant because I figure at some point (within the next year or so I hope) I will be a pregnant runner myself and have been curious as to what you can and can't do. From what I've read, a lot of it depends on the person but medically I didn't see any reason NOT to run while pregnant until your are just to big to handle it. Of course, I am not a medical person and would suggest keeping in consistant contact with your doc while running and growing a baby at the same time.

Cane - Welcome! Sounds like your miles are coming along nicely. What sort of pace do you average?

LeslieLou - Good job on the 9.5 miles! I STILL haven't run my 10 mile route that I have been meaning to do for the last 2 weeks. Argh. I really like the idea of keeping the rock in the shoe to remember those that have died for our country. If I get a rock, I will do the same. :)

LazyOwl - Sorry to hear your knee is acting up. I did a Yoga class once and while I really enjoyed the stretching, the next day I woke up to knee pain that I haven't had in YEARS. That was like 6 months ago and I still feel occasional pain. I have an old injury that's nearly 10 years old and about 5 years ago it stopped hurting. Until that damn Yoga class. Of course, I was a couch potato up until a year and a half ago as well, so I can't completely blaim it on the Yoga, but still - no more. Ever.

Liznboys - Sounds like you're doing well! Yay for no injuries! I hope it stays that way.

rizzobob (Michelle, right?) - I am horrible with names but I seem able to remember yours. :) 9.5 miles - WHOO HOO! Sounds like a solid pace, too. Good job!

MerriH - That's a bummer! I agree with Coach to use caution, and I also wanted to say that please don't be worried about being picked up if you go over time. I've never done a Disney race before, but it just doesn't seem in the spirit of Mickey for them to make a big fuss over those that get sweeped up. Heck, to even be IN the race is more than a lot of people will ever try for, and I would venture to guess that Disney CMs are trained to take that approach with the runners. So I don't think there will be any pointing and laughing at all. Just encouragement and slaps on the back regardless of your time. I, for one, will cheer on everyone and anyone I see. Swept up or not.

Califlady - ACK! My honey is the same way with pain. He literally can't feel pain unless it is a SERIOUS INJURY. It worries me sometimes. So the boot is probably a good idea with you. I hope you heal in time to still run the race, even if you have to slow up. Better to heal then push.

All - So, my training has been going well. I have recently decided to switch up from ONLY running to doing more of a 'workout routine'. When I run outside or on the treadmill, I go anywhere from 5 to 8 miles each time and I am no longer feeling like there's a point where I can't continue. So even though I really want to do some LONG runs between now and the W&D (10, 12, maybe even 15 miles) just to prove to myself that I can, I have recently started to incorporate other exercises - like swimming and some weight lifting. I want to target my arms, my core and my thighs - areas that for some odd reason don't seem to be directly targeted with running. Also, I have been having some fun with pace on the treadmill. On the street, I average about 11 minutes per mile during my 5-8 mile runs. In the gym, I try to go for more of a 8.5 minute mile, which I can only maintain for about 2 miles, but I find it works different muscles and it kind fun. I hope I am not undermining the idea of training for a marathon. I definitely notice that if I don't do a distance run for a few days, my cardo feels a little low when I finally DO go for a run. Anyway, probably more information then I needed to share - but I am flying in the dark just a little bit when it comes to fitness (which I am still pretty new at) and so like to mention what I am doing and see if anyone has any thoughts.

OH! Also, yes there was talk of shirts. I feel horrible but I have just been so busy with work, I barely have time to get my workouts in much less do anything else. So there may not be a shirt. Maybe I can set aside some time in the coming weeks, but these days a typical day for me is up at 7 AM, 8 AM leave for work, work until 7 PM, then sometimes a gym or run, sometimes then a late dinner (which is not my preference), then bed by 11 PM. I don't mind this daily schedule, but I seriously have no time for anything else. Between 8:30 AM and 7 PM (or sometimes even 8 PM) I am in my office, or on a shoot, filming or editing or scheduling or conferencing or emailing or exporting or troubleshooting or otherwise busy. Like I have wanted to post something in this thread for days and am only now finding a free moment....

but sorry, ya'll don't want to hear me go off on some tangent about work. Ack. Sorry.

6 weeks, roughly, to go!!! I am excited. I need this vacation and am SO looking forward to everything about it. HUGS ALL!!

- Carey

Thank you for the welcome. Right now I'm averaging 11 min/mile. I live in Miami so the heat and humidity are really slowing me down!

I'm starting to time my runs with rain showers, nothing better than running in the ran!!!

Ran 11 miles today, other than some stomach issues I feel fine. Was about 30 seconds slower per mile, but I'm fine with that. Hope everyone's training is going well and the heat isn't getting to anyone.

Jennifer

Ran 9 miles this morning. Took me just over 2 hours. Sheesh! It is no fun to be running that long, no characters or theme parks to look at! Boring. haha.

I got a yoga for runners DVD that i'm going to try tomorrow. Haven't been having any issues with hips or knees lately. This morning the only thing that started feeling crampy were my insteps. I do get terrible headaches a couple hours after my long runs though. Usually have to take a nice long nap that day.

Hope everyone is staying cool and gearing up for the big day!

Had the best outdoor run yesterday that we've had all training!! did 4.4 miles in 54 minutes.....even with walking that included way too much talking, and stopping short as a Bambi and Feline ran across our path, we still managed to keep up a 12 minute pace. I think our last ourdoor run as barely 4 miles in 1-1/2 hours! I'm feeling really good for my part of the relay, my partner is trying depseratley to work up to 6 miles outdoors.

It sounds like everyone is doing really well so far! I was able to get 8 miles in yesterday but DH has been working all week and weekend and hasn't been able to do any running since the 5 miles we did on Tuesday. Hopefully he will be able to keep up with me for our 11 mile run next weekend!

I'm willing to step in!!!!!!

I'm not the fastest, but I'm not the slowest! I'd be willing to do either leg.
(Not interested in the afterparty, but interested in the shirt & bling, ie Medal!)

I'm training for the Cape to Cabot 20K for Oct 16, ie 12.4 miles of hilly running, and my sched calls for 14k (8.6 miles) that weekend, so, the long portion of the relay fits in, even if no REAL hills (lol) are involved.

How hilly is hilly? Just check out the above link! Those elevations are in metric!

How fast am I? I'm in the middle to the back! I completed a 10 mile run late Jul in ~105 minutes....... In the FLA heat/humidity, guaranteed it would be slower... how much so, I don't know. But I can guarantee I won't be the last! And I won't be the first!

If anyone needs me, PM me, and we'll figure how to make it work!!
:thumbsup2

Ran the Acura 10 Miler in Toronto today....it was NOT my best race, the first half I really felt like I was overheating (the sun was hot) and I was having some tummy issues but I did manage to finish 1:30:00, not bad I guess. I have another 10 Miler race in 2 weeks, hopefully that one will go a bit better!

7.87 miles today, it was hot but went fairly well. Was slower than I wanted to be but the heat most likely contributed to that...I hope :-/
