Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

Hi all! :goodvibes

I have been absent from the boards recently but am still running like a mad fool. Though, actually, work has been incredibly busy recently and so the last two weeks I didn't get in nearly the days I was hoping for.

Because I seem unable to go as often, I am trying a new approch of going less each week but running more each time. I hope this does not backfire. I am also making use of my gym a little bit more because even though the weather is great here. I can't seem to escape the office until 7 PM, and my gym is open until 11 PM on weekdays and that way I can get a hour on the treadmill and not worry about it getting dark. On the weekends I still do my 8 mile run and these next few weekends I want to try a 10 mile route that I have been meaning to do for the last few weeks but something always gets in my way.

Just over 8 weeks away! I'm excited!! How about everyone else? Have you seen this year's metal? It is a shiny and it shall be mine and it shall be my shiny.

Thanks for the map, Coach! I was just looking at the elevation, and that is about as flat as flat can get. Here in Oregon everywhere I run is guarenteed to have some sort of incline/decline, and its usually pretty substantial. With the solid, flat surface of the W&D, I am hoping my hilly training will give me an advantage. Especially since I will NOT be used to the humidity.

LazyOwl - Good luck on your 7 miles!

CalifLady - I hope you recover in time for the W&D!

FireDancer - are you running this race? I forget. I hope so.

APrunner - what is your long route up to?

I am so bad with names. I know there are bunch of other Dis'ers on this thread, most of which I've said something to in the past. HUGS TO ALL YA'LL!!

:grouphug:

I am training on a lot of hills too and I am hoping it helps. I will be back in South Carolina next week and can't wait to run where it is flat. :rotfl:

APrunner - Yes, I am an early morning runner. I'm in Houston. At this time of year, our coolest temperature of the day (in the middle of the night) hovers at 80 degrees.

Yay for Houston runners! :woohoo: The heat has finally gotten to me. So far this summer I've been able to push through and get it done, but I just didn't have it in me yesterday. I went out for 5 and got through 3, and that was pushing it because at 1.5 I had already decided I was stopping at the end of the 2 mile loop I was on. I told myself that I just needed to get in the groove so I gave it one more mile, but I was just so done. I'm a little disapointed though...I can count on less than one hand how many times I've done that in the last year. Unfortunately I have to run at the worst part of the day during the week...usually start between 5:30p-6p. I may need to start adding in a treadmill run at the gym here and there just to give myself a break.

FireDancer - are you running this race? I forget. I hope so.

Not this year. I am staying closer to home for my fall races this year (Akron, OH, Parkersburg, WV, and Chicago). It will probably be a while before I do another Disney race.

Yay! I'm in Houston too. For my short weekday runs I usually wait until after 7:15 or so to start, it's just too darn hot. I'm trying to wake up at 7am on Saturday for my long runs now, but even that takes me into the 9am heat, so it's tough.

I will definitely try to find some more IT band stretches, hopefully something that works for me. I still had knee pain through my two short runs this week. I'm not sure what it is, it's just general knee acheyness and a weird feeling of weakness in the knee. I've bought a sleeve from Academy and I'm hoping it helps.

Hope everyone has a good weekend and gets lots of running done! I'm still slated to attempt my longest run of 7 miles, hopefully I don't faint haha. Still a *long* way to go!

I registered for the Indianapolis Womens 5K over Labor Day weekend........think it will be a good experience 1 month before the 1/2 relay. I'm up to 5 miles in 1 hr on the treadmill.....my outdoor runs still are not great......maybe 1 or 2 a month if I"m lucky. oh well......i'm still a beginniner.

so question.......what is the thoughts on pedicures during training? :cutie: yes or no? if you do get them, do you just not have them scrap/file off the callus and rough spots? is it ok to get them right up to the race, or do you stop so many weeks in advance? :confused3

there was a discussion of a shirt......did it get decided on? I think we were leaning towards pink.

Ok you Houston runners... you have my utmost respect! :worship: I went out for just an easy 2 mile walk and it was SO muggy and hot... abnormal for our area... I don't know how guys do it!

So tonight was my first time back on the road after a month long break to try to heal my suspected plantar fasciitis... I've got a long way to go to be ready for the race. Its coming up so quickly! :scared1:

Hope everyone has some great runs/walks this weekend!

Speaking of Houston runners, I hope some of you got to see the beautiful sunrise amongst the remnants of the Don thunderstorms. I got to see lightning in the distance, and then the sun illuminate the remaining clouds. Very breathtaking.

10 miles at a 10:30 pace today, hoping to work up to a 2 hour half by the W&D. The way I see it, now that I'm used to this intense humidity at a decent pace, then the lower humidity and temps of the fall/winter will seem easier.

Personally I would avoid a pedicure before and leading up to a big race. I have done the Breast Cancer 3-Day (60 miles of walking over three days) three times and that was always one of the things that they told us when we were training. I would hold off until after the race.

Houston runner here who hit a major humidity wall this am..... But not in Houston:scared1:

The early morning trades in Kaanapoli were dead still. No breeze at all. While the humidity sucked or maybe the residual effects of one too many Mai Tai's, well I am not complaining. It's one of the tough it out and remember the tool runs that make it work.

Currently sitting in the outdoor breakfast court thinking beach or pool....

Hi everyone,

I have been following this thread for a few weeks since my husband and I signed up for the relay. Tons of great info on here so thanks for that!

One question that I have is not staying at a host hotel. Is it going to be an issue to get a cab at the end of the night? I'm not sure that we really want to switch to the All Stars. I know that we will have to take a bus to epcot to get to Wide World of Sports for both the expo and race. Our options are to stay were we are and deal with the extra transportation issues, move to the All Stars, or book one night at the All Stars and keep our regular room also. What would you do and why? Thanks in advance.

Catching a cab at Epcot may be an issue....or not. One would have better luck hailing one at a resort. So you have tow options. Exit Epcot at I gate then head to one of the Epcot resorts and hail a cab to you resort. The alternative is to take a race bus to a host resort and then hail a cab .

Okay, see my post on Thursday...

I've rolled. I've stretched. I haven't run for three days. It still feels like deep muscle cramp. Or something right about where the Achilles attaches to the calf muscle.

Will it be stupid to give a slow run a try on Monday morning? :confused3

I was going to order our party tickets today for 9/30. I can purchase them thru the ticket link we got when registering for the race but they are the same price on the main ticket webpage. Does it make a difference which one I use?

How's everyone's training going? I've had to cut back this week with my IT band acting up a bit. I'm kind of bummed but I hope with a week or so off with lots of stretching and massaging I will be able to get back on the road.

I have been cutting back on my long runs due to the heat but have tried to still get in at least three runs a week on the treadmill.

Loooong time lurker...

Training is going great, just finished a 6.6 mile run and everything felt great.

So, just took a test yesterday, and I'm PREGNANT!!! Very happy, but this throws a curve ball into my plans for the race!!! I'm up to 8 miles, everything is going great, but taking it at a slower pace is not really an option. I hover around 14-16 min/mile. Walk/run intervals using Hadfield/Bingham's plan.

My DH is also running, so maybe we'll be able to switch to the relay? Or I go to the 5K. Or I just get as far as I can in the half? I obviously still need to discuss w/doc and also see if running still goes well over the next month or so. So many ???'s!!!!! This is my first half - did an 8K last month, so not really a seasoned distance runner by any means!!

Congratulations!! :goodvibes What exciting news. I'm crossing my fingers for you that you'll be able to run. But, if not - I hope your the thought of your future baby will help soothe the disappointment.

...

Today, I ran my longest run at 1 time - 9.5 miles. I felt good the first 5 miles and sustained 12'30" the entire way. The last 4.5 miles drove my average pace up to 13'45"...oh well! At least I finished!

Something interesting happened on my run. I got a rock in my shoe. It made me remember one lent my sunday school teacher had us put a pebble or penny in our shoe to for a day to remember sacrifice. Today, I felt the rock at about mile 1.5. I decided to keep it with me to remember the sacrifice of the 30 soldiers that were killed in action in Afghanistan. It moved around in my shoe and eventually, I couldn't feel it any more. Until, at about mile 7.5, when I was getting really tired and I wanted to quit - the pebble came back. Anyway, I again thought of the sacrifice of many, but especially of our men and women. My fatigue or discomfort for the next 2 miles to reach a personal goal was really inconsequential and I finished! :goodvibes

I hope everyone's training is going well!

Congrats on the pregnancy krisnchris, and congrats to everyone on their training progress!

I dragged myself out of bed at 6:30am Saturday and did an 8 mile run (longest for me thus far) before it hit 100 degrees here. It took me about an hour and 45 minutes. I am worried that with the whole 13.1 miles I am going to be really really slow. Hopefully I don't get picked up by the sweepers!

I've been fighting off IT band issues too. I found a knee band/brace thing that seems to be helping and I'm still trying to stretch as often as possible. I was going to go to a yoga for athletes class yesterday but I wanted to sleep in after that run :)

Just 8 weeks to go!! :scared1:
