Please make this sticky

I think it would be helpful to new diser's like my self as well as all the regulars, to have a list of all the Dead Beats in the VMK. It could also serve as a warning to those that are considering piracy. (kinda ironic that im posting this thread, no?) I hope that it will show other newbies like myself the sense of togetherness, that i have come to enjoy here in my short tenure here on the dis. So if some one has proven to be a dead beat please post their VMK name here. I will keep this list current for quick reference. Let's hope this list does not have to grow.

1) **********
2) *********

I really don't like this idea, and hope no thread like this ever becomes a sticky.

There is no way to confirm anyone's allegations about others here on the Dis. We have no access to text logs.

Granted, there have been numerous confirmatory reports on some people. But in general, I don't think it's a good idea to have a thread that encourages an "open season" of posting defamatory reports on people who are unable to defend themselves, or may not even be present to do so.

What about a much more positive thread -- a thread of GOOD traders?

i hate to say it, but there comes a time when you just have to put an end to some bad habits like scamming, and its not like dis ppl will abuse it.

claiming yes, but i doubt it, i have not seen one bad diser in a month and 60 hours of play.

I personally see nothing different from this thread than the numerous posts about certain VMK-ers that have scammed others. It's an opinion and one has the option to ignore the post or not. Likewise, the post does not state that replies should include derogatory comments, but instead a name to be on the "look out" for during trading sessions.

I posted this the last time the subject came up and I will post again for all the new dis members. The whole reason the Dis is so wonderful is because we don't bash, we aren't mean and everyone is allowed to post their opinions. We agree to disagree sometimes but thats ok. Its life. Dis is so popular to so many people because we all are generallly a great group of people. I dont think it is a good idea to post a sticky thread specifically to keep a list of scammers. It just isn't right. Post a thread naming them if you want. People can choose to read or not. But a compiled list is not good. Its not the nature of the Dis community. For the record, I have been reading the dis for 5 years even with a low post count and I am 100% against a compiled list.

My son had someone attempt to scam him today. Luckily he knew better. Someone offered him inferno for teleportation and fireworks. He didn't want to give up his teleportation, but really wanted inferno. After thinking about it, he decided to go ahead and do the trade. Trade window opens, he puts in the pins, and the other person puts in a teacup (i think green) and said that it makes inferno. My son told the guy he knew better and exited the trade. I asked him the others name, and all he could remember is that it had popular in it.

So if you have kids that play, make sure they understand that to get magic they have to get the pin, that nothing else makes it. And that the only way to get it from another is to physically trade the pin (not counting codes on the boards)

I don't agree with those numerous posts about other VMK-ers either, and I still don't think that a thread dedicated to accusing a list of people as dishonest is appropriate.

There are some who believe that the Dis board forums do not condone personal attacks and possible libel. I think a list of "potential scammers to watch out for" approaches a personal attack and is in itself a derogatory comment on that person.

Nor do I believe it possible, or wise, for people to say "i have not seen one bad diser..." because all it takes to become a DIS-er is to register, and one of the people who has been accused of a bad trade advertised the trade here on the DIS, and is therefore a DIS-er.

Think about it. If anybody is accused of being a bad trader, they could simply post in the thread that they are not. This will quickly degenerate into a fight and flame-fest. And even if the thread were effective, just how difficult is it for a scammer to create a mule whose name is not on ther list to do each bad trade?

I continue to believe that the best way to protect yourself from scams is to:
- trade with people you already trust
- be as aware as possible of scam tactics

And in the long run:
- continue to encourage the VMK to change the trade confirmation dialog, beyond the recent minor improvement of the warning for a one-sided trade.

A simple 2 second countdown after any item is removed, or a confirmation dialog listing ALL the items on both sides of the trade would prevent the item removal / item flooding / similar appearing item scams currently used.

I do not think you can libel a made up character in a game....That said I am on the fence about this issue. I see both sides and while I agree they can not defend themselves cheating is cheating and should be reported. But then again we don't want a flame fest happening either. See I could go either way on this subject. Just not sure.

Mal, I am with you for the most part. But, I really do not see how this is considered flaming. I personally have been "attacked" much worse in posts than one would ever be on a simple list. :confused3

Similarly, as with numerous posts over the summer, it seems that this one is starting to spiral and I feel bad for the original poster. I know he meant it in no harm and not to cause a philosophical debate about what is wrong and right. I can only imagine how he must feel about his idea to protect honest players being denounced. :sad2: Maybe we should all take our own advice about positivity and thank him for trying to help protect us all.

Just stating my opinion. :disrocks:

OK, I'm going to try to step in and be the voice of reason here (at least I hope so), because I really hate to see posts start to turn nasty, and I don't want to see that happen here.

I'm not going to offer an opinion one way on another on the original posters discussion, but I would like to encourage everyone to please not turn this into a big huge debate. You either agree or disagree. You have the power to decide if you want to look at this thread, or ignore it.

If you want to be on the lookout for scammers, then by all means read the thread.

If you don't think it's fair to put this list out there, then ignore it.

The choice is yours. But there is no need to sit here and debate the issue.

VMK is supposed to be fun, and the DIS is supposed to be fun. When things started getting heated, the fun goes away.

-Sees Moderator Hat being flung through the air, grabs it, and decides that THIS hat is the perfect new item for the Pass It On game!-

VMKers: Be on the lookout for a DIS BOARD Moderator Hat; coming soon to a Trade, near you! ;)

Would it not be better to post a list of the scams? This would give everyone a heads up on what to look for. Would also eliminate the possibility of personal attacks.

Just my opinion :confused3

I like this idea better than a list. After all, people that scam you can easily create another character, however after they find a scam that works, they will usually stick with it. Perhaps a new thread where people describe exactly what the scam was, without naming the character. (Including items offered, asked for, and any other details that can be remembered)

I never knew that the Moderator Hat was a Pink Trucker Hat. Wow, you learn something new every day!

Believe me, I've learned my lesson after the trading password fiasco.

I think as penance for myself I'll wear my Sorcerer Mickey hat as a dunce
cap for a week. :teeth:

I agree it's nicer to be positive than negative. I enjoy the thread praising
people for their generosity in the game.
