Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I'd be willing to bet that Simon established that he would not be giving Camile a warm, fuzzy goodbye. I'm pretty sure he opted out of saying a thing to her, because he couldn't say anything positive. She deserved to go, but didn't deserve to be crushed before walking off the stage. SHE didn't vote herself in each week, poor thing.

Glad to see her go, though - her performances were painful to watch.

Next week is movie week - any suggestions for who should sing what?

I just assumed Simon didn't make any parting comments because they ran out of time. It's just as well as Camille had already been voted off -- no need to "beat a dead horse".

I feel almost certain that the performers will continue to improve every week. With some it will be obvious, with others, not as noticeable. The question is...how many of us are going to have the patience to hang in there to witness it?

On a side note, the person that should be voted off is whoever has been helping them with their song selections. I know they have a list of songs to choose from, but come on...

I am glad to see Camile go, it was painful to listen to her.

I think George has gotten better since the beginning. I also like Latoya.

Ds had a friend over last night (both are 10) His friend kept saying that Jasmine was hot and shouldn't be voted off. It was funny.

If next week is movie week, big band week disappeared somehow, and Barry Manilow is scheduled to be a guest judge on 4/20 --- wonder if 4/20 will be big band week? Sure hope so.

About this round...

My goodness, so many of them just don't have it this year. It's very disappointing. Especially after all of the hype about this being the "best top 12 ever."

Jon and John not being in the bottom 3 is asinine. Both are kind of cute (in a 13-year-old girl crush sort of way), but they are way out of their league.

Camile should have been gone long ago and she knew it. It was painful to watch.

I didn't watch season 1, but know the Tamyra story. I was very impressed with her last night. DH and I both thought the same thing, "Whitney Houston before Bobby Brown came along."

While the top 4 talent-wise are probably George, Jennifer, Latoya and Fantasia, that doesn't make for a very diverse group style-wise. I'm not sure that will help the competition in the end.

So are Movie Songs those that are featured on any motion picture soundtrack?

I think I'd crack up watching JPL get down singing "Footloose"!

LOL, that could very well be the perfect song for him though!!!! Even though it is one of my favorite songs, and I can't stand him, I think he could pull it off.

I believe the correct person went home last night, but the fact that the 2 Johns are never in the bottom 3 is so wrong. They are just nowhere near good enough for this competition! I was so wishing Amy would jump back on stage and start singing on Tuesday.

No kidding. Amy should have never been voted out as early as she was. The reason the Johns are doing so well - I believe - is because all of the preteen girls are calling over and over for them.

I am not a preteen and I vote for John Stevens. And I'm not the only one who likes him. My sister and some friends like him, my boyfriend and his friend like him because they like his style, and my mom and my boyfriend's mom really like him. So it's not just the so called "teenyboppers" that like him and vote for him.

A comment about the vocal coach...

Debra Byrd (who is a longtime friend and backup singer for Barry Manilow, by the way...) was asked recently about the songs that the kids sing. There are times when the kids will choose a song that she doesn't think is quite right for them, and she will tell them this. Ultimately, the song choice is THEIRS. If they insist, she helps them as best she can, but they have to be the ones to choose the song (except for the picking the songs out of the hat thing). As she jokingly put it, "When they listen to me they do well; when they don't, they lose!" :)

I have to agree that the bottom 3 definately should have been John, Jon and Camille. How Jasmine and Diana wound up in the bottom 3 over Jon and John is beyond me.

I didn't watch season 1 either, but I'm amazed with the talent that came out of season 1 (I love hearing Kelly Clarkson songs on the radio, and Tamyra's performance last night was very impressive). I was an addict of season 2; my week revolved around Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

By this point last season, we had 3 standouts (Clay, Ruben and Kimberley Locke). This season, there is no one (or group) of people that really stand out above anyone else. Everyone is just average. The first 2 seasons were so impressive that it's disappointing that this season is flopping.

I wonder if there will be an AI4?

My mom is 61 and votes for John Stevens every week - hardly a teenager. She likes his style and would love to see him put out a standards CD. I suspect there are lots of older women that are voting for him, as well as the young girls.

I'm really starting to get a little irked by people that say JS and JPL should be out, and are only in because teeny boppers like the way they look. I don't think I can count how many times I've heard GROWN MEN say they like Britney Spears. If a woman is to say, yeah, but she CAN'T SING. The reply is always "Who CARES if she can sing?"

Isn't this the same thing?

I totally agree, grinningghost. Why do people get so upset with others who have different taste? If 24,000,000 votes were cast they weren't all from teenyboppers. And even if many were, teenyboppers do buy a lot of music!

I remember when the Spice Girls were so popular. They couldn't sing. I remember being told that one day they would be pumping gas and the young man next to me saying, "Do you know where?":p

There's lots more to being an idol than having a good voice. I would imagine that's why many, many did not make the final 32.

Okay - based on the past couple of posts, I guess my assessment of the J's is wrong.

And I can't stand the way Britney sings (or can't) and don't think she should win any singing competition, just as I don't think a cute guy should win if they don't have the voice for it.

<font face="times" size="+0">i'm glad that Camille was finally put out of her misery. that girl just couldn't handle the pressure. she also was molded by the show's stylists into looking pretty bad... the clothes and hairstyles she's been wearing are horrible. i thought she looked really cute (kind of like Mariah Carey) in her Hawaii audition, and her voice was great then too when she was singing Lauren Hill. but she seriously needs some voice training, and just doesn't have enough experience being on stage. anyway, it's good she got voted off. less suffering for her, and less suffering for those who apparently hated her. :worried: i hope she can improve, and maybe eventually break into a music career.

i was disappointed to see Jasmine in the bottom 3. but i guess she really picked the wrong song, which affected her performance. i felt bad that she had to sing it again, because, like Paula said, she really can't do power songs. i think she was losing her voice as the result of having to sing that again, and i really hope she takes the time to rest her voice so it can be back next week.

i'm starting to also think that Fantasia doesn't need the AI title. i believe she can get a record deal w/o winning. so i'm not voting for her anymore. there are other contestants that are good singers, and really need AI more than she does.

even though i like John Stevens, i really thought he deserved to be in the bottom 3 this week. that was a horrible performance. good effort, but it was still horrible in the end. he really needs Big Band week... if that will ever come.

anyway *sigh* so far this season no one has really given any touching performances yet. well, Jennifer's rendition of Circle of Life was probably the most touching for me... but i'm a Disney freak :p so i'm not sure if that counts. George is good, but he just doesn't do it for me... not even close to the way Clay was last year. the weird thing about Clay though... for some reason now that he's not in a competition, i don't find his singing quite as moving.</font>

Yeah, and who is going to wait on line with you? If you think I'm sleeping on the pavement of New York, you can forget it. I love you both, but there ARE limits :teeth:

That's exactly what I think. Maybe some of John Steven's and JPL's fans are teenagers, but not all of them! And teenagers definitely do buy the majority of the music, so isn't it important to have someone that teenagers like too? All I hear about is how John Stevens should not be in the top 12 and that teenyboppers should stop voting for him, it's like I'm being told that I'm not allowed to vote for who I like.

That's because Clay is one of those singers that is so good, that he sounds so much better when he's singing live. When he records a cd, everything is all computerized. That's what they use to make most people sound better, but Clay doesn't need it. I would much rather hear him live than on a cd.

I'm with you! Count me in as another whose NOT a teenager (38)and votes for John Stevens. I only vote for JS. I think I voted for him about 100 times the other night for about an hour and then I screwed up on redial and couldn't remember the number so I went to bed!

He is the only one with a unique, and yes, nice voice (IMHO) whose CD I would buy. Of course, he'd have to sing the kind of music he's meant to sing...the old standards.

I read a cute little story about him in the Star. It was just about how he's LOVED Sinatra since he was about 5 years old from going to his Grandparents house and hearing it. He has a poster of Sinatra on his wall in his room. I just think it's great that a teenage boy could look up to Sinatra that way, in this day and age. :teeth:

I don't let the "JS stinks" posts bother me. We all have different tastes. I can't stand Fantasia but others think she's great. George, Diana, Jennifer and LaToya do NOTHING for me. To each his own I guess.

I like JS, JP, and Jasmine. But of course, I think that George, LaToya and Fantasia will be the top 3 unfortunately...possibly Jasmine or Jennifer could make it that far...we will see.

Even though the singers aren't as good or exciting as the last 2 years, I'm still enjoying watching the show!::yes::

I am enjoying watching this year even though I don't have my favorite that I feel has to get through. I also vote for JS. Not 100 times but at least a few. I don't think he was so bad on Tuesday..I thought he was fun to watch...he certainly had the crowd going didn't he? (and all without running out there and high fiving and saying "c'mon" to the crowd) I also vote for one or two others though...I don't limit nyself to one person yet....that comes when they are down to 3 or 4 people. Last year I started voting only for Clay when they were down to 4. Before that it was Clay and Kimberly.

I forgot to add that I am in my mid 40's...not a teeny bopper but the Mom of teens and a teeny bopper

Yes...I agree! I love Clay's voice...but I don't listen to his CD much at all. Though I **LOVED** hearing him in the American Idol Concert!!! *thud* :teeth: I wanted him to have "To Love Somebody" on his CD :( I'm glad he released the "Solitaire" single though! :)
