I am not a fan of trendy, unique or uniquely spelled names, but to each their own, I am sure my kids names are considered boring to some, but i love them, so it's fine.
AS for calling people what they are named, I discarded any name that I didn't also like the nickname. For example I liked Nicholas and Nick, but didn't like Nicky, so we threw out that name when thinking of names for our son. Same for Michael, I love the name Michael, can't stand Mike.
We picked Matthew, because we like Matthew, Matt and Matty. If I didn't like Matt, we would have picked another name.
My daughter is Julia, the only nn for that is Jules, which I love. Julie is NOT a nn for Julia, it is a separate name and I would hate for her to be called Julie.
The only person to ever do that was my FIL, though, and he stopped.
