Odd spelled names

I named my son Devan...I figured it would be easy for others to spell because it is essentially Evan with a D in front. I am not sure if anyone in school has spelled it right the first time. Even relatives spell it wrong. He gets Devin, Devon, DeVon...

I think funky spellings are great, everyone wants to feel somewhat unique :)
My name is spelled Caryn...and I love that it's spelled that way, even though I have to spell it out for everyone. The only thing that can bug me, is when people imagine that there are more letters to my name and call me Carolyn!

Wow! I am also a Caryn and constantly have to correct people. The only other time I have seen it spelled that way is the current contestant on Survivor. I continually have to tell people that my name is not Carolyn. How exciting to meet someone with the same name and the same problem!

My daughter is named Devon after the place in England. I thought that it was a pretty name with a normal spelling. However, her name is constantly being written as Devin or else mispronounced as De Von. Makes me crazy because I purposely tried to give her a simple name.

LOL, that you deal with the same thing and with different spelling.

2 of my children have "different" spellings... we have a Geoffrey...it was one of the only BOY names we liked but my DH had a cousin that had been ill & died as a child Jeffrey...we chose to change the spelling but keep the name...

the same thing happened when we picked "Karalyn" as our last DD's name...one of my cousins DD had been Carolyn...she was born with heart problems & died before she was 5 yrs old...my parents didn't like us picking the name but appreciated the different spelling.

Yes, they get the names spelled...even pronounced wrong! But most people LOVE the way we spell "Karalyn" and we point out that "Geoffrey" is the English spelling. My DD is in 1st grade & already knows to spell her name the first time she meets people...she thinks it makes her special...it helps that her new peditrician has the SAME spelling!!

My DS is in8th grade & has the nickname of "GE- OFF", with his friends, he likes it...so if it works for him what am I to say!

My daughter is Aubrey. People are always calling her Audrey. She's an adult now and sometimes she corrects people and sometimes she doesn't. She was named after a song by the group Bread. (Kind of aging myself). As the song says..."a not so very ordinary girl or name". She's a beautiful person with a beautiful name :rose:

Growing up everybody always spelled my name wrong, Dyan. Now a days, I have stopped correcting them. Knowing how annoying this was, I am not sure why, but I gave my daughter a unique name, Talya, most can't say it and no one can spell it, not even my MIL.

;) Hi Lindsay Did the Dis spell your name wrong ? I thought it was Lindsey:)
Nope, it's LindsAy, and around here it's a common way to spell it.

When I worked in a preschool/afterschool care program (many moons ago) we had a little boy named Dayerrick.... as in Derek...... poor kid probably could never find pencils with his name on them. And it took him FOREVER to learn to spell his name!

My name is Corrine, so out of curiousity how would YOU pronouce it:

Like
1. Core-in

or like

2. Core-een

We had a friend named Corinne and it was pronounced like your #1 - Core-in.

The problem is made worse when hypens are used IMHO! My name is Jacqui-Dawn. It is NOT Jackie, Jaqui, Jacqueline or anything else! I usually just use the Jacqui bit but even then people always spell it wrong!!! As a child I NEVER had anything with my name on because it was spelt differently! My maiden name was easy to spell so I always used to have to spell out my christian name. Now my married name is often spelt wrong too so i end up with BOTH names spelt wrong more often than not!

I would never saddle my kids with unuauls spelt names as it is a real pain. My DD is Gemma - not Jemma or Jenna but the 'proper' spelling GEMMA! I don't mind people shortening it, as this is usuallly to GEM which she is - a real gem!!!! :flower:

My mom spells her name Jaci so it was a given that I would be Keli, my ds is Kimi, etc. I like the spelling of my name, don't ever correct anyone that spells it incorrectly though. It's just not a big deal. Actually I've had people act hurt when they find out they've been spelling my name wrong for a long time and I never corrected them. Of course I do make sure it's the correct spelling on legal documents or my driver's license and stuff like that. I named my dd Ashli and she loves the spelling of her name also.

Our last name gets misspelled all the time.

It's GERARD. Not GERALD..not BERARD. Not GERAD. GERARD!

Oh..and since we're on the topic of weird names..there was a woman I waited on yesterday who had her daughter with her. I could see the nametag on her diaper bag. The poor girls name was Brynyn. Yes..Brynyn. Pronounced "Brah-nan'. I asked. Poor

Everyone spells my first name wrong. Kelley. I don't even bother to point it out anymore. Since it's one of the surnames in my family there are several dozen of us who face the same problem. We grew tired of complaining about it generations ago...or so I hear.

I know a child whose name is Emma Leigh. Of course, everyone assumes she's Emily. Her mother confided once that she wasn't aware of the confusion she was creating with that name combination. And, in hindsight, she wouldn't do it again.

Kelley

My oldest DD is named Jeana (pronounced Gina). She was named after her grandmother Jean (or at least this was the Americanized version of her name, which I later found out was Janina). She passed away when I was 8 months pregnant and since Jean isn't a favorite name of mine, we stuck an "a" on the end and made Jeana. We had discussed spelling it this way or using 2 'n's (Jeanna) which was my preference. Since it hadn't been 100% decided, DH filled out the hospital papers, only using 1 n. No one ever says her name correctly, normally she gets Jenna. She answers to anything starting with "J". :earboy2:

I always just spell my name out first. My last name too. Everyone would always spell that one wrong if I just say it.

I was named after my Great Grandmother. :)

There was a thread on the DIS awhile ago bashing people who named their children with unusual spellings. Well, I wouldn't have it any other way. Otherwise, why not just name everyone Jane and John? Different spellings give personality.

My name is spelled exactly as it sounds. Anyone who does not speak english as their first language say my name correctly. When they say the other spelling, it sounds like "Lara".

Edit:
Oh I missed the post, I see someone decided to call my parents uneducated on this thread too. FYI, my dad is Ivy league.

Well, I pronounce my name Core-een. Spelled Corrine, but soooo many people say Core-in, even those that have known me for years. I gave up on correcting them. As for spelling, I think I have been spelling it for people for so long, it's just something I'm used to, I used to at least have a common last name, now I spell that too!

The worst though is when the telemarketers slaughter is soo badly that I'm called Corny! Do you really think I'm going to give them the time of day :confused3

About once a year or so a Scandanavian person will come up to me and ARGUE with me about how my name is pronounced! It's Kari (like the movie Carrie or the almost president Kerry) but they always try to convince me that I'm misprouncing my own name; it should really be Car-ee. Nope, sorry, that may be true elsewhere but that's not my name.

I hate when people misspell my first name but even more so when people add a C to my Irish last name- it's not Mac something it's Ma something.

I knew someone named Christopher but it was spelled Kristoffer.

My sons name is Zachary but when shortened we spell it Zack. Which I don't think is odd, just everyone shortens it to Zach.

While I understand what you are saying, this doesn't always hold true.
The name Lynn is a very good example. If it is not used as a first name, lots of people have it as a middle name. Everyone I have met with Lynn as part of their name has been spelt L-Y-N-N, so why does everyone else instist on adding an e to it (Lynne) when it is written out? :confused3

Lynn/Lynne/Lyn - now THAT's a name I really goofed up!

My middle name is Lynn (with 2 N's no E). When I was working one of my jobs was to set folks up in the computer - the manager would give me a handwritten list of "new hires".. The manager handed me a name LYNNE (I noticed because my middle name is spelled differently).. I put her in the computer - filled out her payroll information .. EVERYTHING as LYNNE... it was FIVE years later that this sweet sweet woman very nicely said to me one day... you know my name is spelled LYN :earseek: I felt TERRIBLE - It took me forever to get it corrected... while it truly wasn't my fault - I knew it was something that bothered her, yet she understood.

That said - I guess I don't understand spelling names differently - and if a name is spelled out of the norm - then people should not expect automatic "request of spelling.." - That said - I do ask Kathy/Cathy Katherine/Catherine's "C or K"... laugh.... After the Lynn/Lyn/Lynne incident I ALWAYS verified spelling with the PERSON .. not relying on the manager..

I had to laugh... I knew a girl named Corinne - I called her Core-een... she got angry and said .... it's Core-IN .... oh well..
