Odd spelled names

My name is Lorrie. I always think it is a pretty straightforward name... it is pronounced just like Lori (Lor-ee). However, I get Laura, Laurie, Lora, Lorraine, and once, I was even called Larry. I politely told them that Larry is my dad!

Even relatives spell it wrong.

LOL mine too. Until the day she died my grandmother spelled my name Tammie. It has never been spelled any way other than Tammy. All the cards and letters she got over the years with my name in them and she never noticed she was spelling it wrong? Either that or she thought we were :rotfl:

i am endlessly being called cathy. i have no idea why but a lot of people see caity and say cathy.

And neither of us can get things already personalized :rotfl:

Neither can I. I usually see Jody or Jodi, but never Jodie. Consequently, whenever I see anything personalized with my name spelled correctly, I must buy it, no matter what it may be. I really do love my Canadian Niagara Falls zipper pull, though. :p

Personally, I'm also not a big fan of the creatively-spelled names, feeling that it's asking for nothing but trouble for these kids when they grow up and have to deal with all of the misspellings and mispronunciations, etc. It just smacks--IMO--of trying way too hard to be "unique." Of course, I have such a bizarre last name that I never had to worry about uniqueness, so there you go. :)

I regularly hear that someone has spelled my name wrong. One time I ordered a name plate for my desk and when I went to pick it up, the poor woman got so upset because they had spelled my name wrong. When I assured her that it was correct she asked me if I was sure.

Yep, I'm sure. My name is often mispronouced too. I think the worst time was when a man asked a waiting room for "Cat O'Holan". LOL!

my first name is spelled "laurAn
with an 'A' its always getting spelled wrong ;)

I am not a fan of trendy, unique or uniquely spelled names, but to each their own, I am sure my kids names are considered boring to some, but i love them, so it's fine.

AS for calling people what they are named, I discarded any name that I didn't also like the nickname. For example I liked Nicholas and Nick, but didn't like Nicky, so we threw out that name when thinking of names for our son. Same for Michael, I love the name Michael, can't stand Mike.

We picked Matthew, because we like Matthew, Matt and Matty. If I didn't like Matt, we would have picked another name.

My daughter is Julia, the only nn for that is Jules, which I love. Julie is NOT a nn for Julia, it is a separate name and I would hate for her to be called Julie.
The only person to ever do that was my FIL, though, and he stopped.

I am glad that I am in good company :sunny:

The forever misspelled Mishell/ Michelle

My sisters name is Aimee and my neices name is Baileigh. Both not really odd, but not common either. We named out newest son Kaleb Linn

I'm used to having my name misspelled, but was surprised to move to a tiny town of 500 and find someone close in age with the same spelling -- Christi.
Everyone always ends it with Y, or starts it with a K if it ends in I.

You think you were surprised? When I was in HS, we moved to the next county over from where we lived, so I had to change to a new HS. Imagine my surprise when there was another girl with MY SAME NAME!!!!

Kimya

I would never give my child an unusual spelling, because it's just easier when it's spelled the traditional way. My sister's name is Assunta. No one could pronounce it, much less spell it. She goes by Susan.

Well, my name is always spelled wrong, and many times I have been told that my parents messed up. I dislike being called Kristen, and Kris is even worse. I'll respond to any way of saying Kirsten. My Dh is Dewain, and no one ever gets that right with out help. However, there are so many variations that I am sure it is a problem for all guys with the name. My sister named her son Mathew, yes with one "t", because she thought that was the right way. I'll never forget getting in trouble with my typing teacher for arguing that I had NOT missed the second "t" on his name.

I get that too. I'm Sadie (after my grandmother). Most people see that and their eyes just process Stacie for some reason.

I have a Jefferey, not jeffrey or jeffery or geoffrey. That extra "e" is just too much for everyone! Until the last year or so I would have to go to school a few days before the first day and make sure the teachers spelled his name right. Too many questioned him about the extra "e". Go Figure. :confused3

Heck, I've got a very common name, but since there's multiple ways to spell it, invariably it's spelled the wrong way. Most of the time, my name gets spelled Steven (it's Stephen, though).

My name is Mona-- easy you would think. I get Monica, Monea, you name it

I named DD Catherine. Classic spelling. Her name is mispelled all the time. Having grown up with an odd name I thought I was giving her a nice common name but she has to spell it out all the time.

My DS is in8th grade & has the nickname of "GE- OFF", with his friends, he likes it...so if it works for him what am I to say!

My cousin has been best friends with a boy named Geoff since we were little. They started out calling him Gee-off as a joke and then it just became the accepted way of saying his name. He was always around and was my cousin's roommate when they were older. A couple of years ago, we were all having lunch and someone I didn't know well was talking about "Jeff." I told her, "I don't think I know Jeff...who is he?" Turns out she was talking about Gee-off--the guy I'd been catching up with for about an hour. Cracked everybody up at the table!

Now...unusual spelling. My dd is Caitlin. I got this name from a family genealogy before it became mega-popular as Katelyn (or whatever variation.) DD's school insisted on spelling it Caitlyn--on everything despite the fact that all her information had it spelled Caitlin. They did it for so long, she began to just write her name that way in self-defense. That's when I went down and straightened it all out!

One of my cats is named Casey but I wanted to make it different so it's Kayci. She hasn't had to correct very many people on the spelling though.
