Odd spelled names

My middle name is spelled Michele instead of the regular Michelle. I have actually had people ask me if *I* spelled it wrong.. uhhhh.. no, it was that way when I learned how to spell it LOL

LOL...my middle name is also Michele. I have a close friend Michelle and whenever we sign cards to each other, we sign it "the one who spells it right".

My first name is Kimya. Just like Sonia or Tonya...Kimya.

I always intro myself "hi, i'm kimya" and I get "oh, hi kim". Did I say Kim???

I also get many people who assume my name is Kim Ya and that I'm of Asian decent!

Kimya

My daughter's name is Damia (Day-mee-uh with the emphasis on Day). It was a character in a book I read. I loved the name and spelled it like the character. NO ONE ever gets it right. She's become just Mia (like Mia Farrow) unless she's in BIG trouble. LOL

My son's name is normal spelling but people misunderstand it sometimes. Its Ryan but he's often been called Brian. Not a big deal, we just correct them.

When picking a name for our DD the only name we both liked was Bailey. I thought about changing the spelling to "Bailee" because my brothers middle name was Lee and I wanted to honor him by naming her after him. (He passed away 15 years ago from CF) DH hated it, but would have went along with it if I chose to do that. But on paper it just looked wrong (I know, because it was wrong, lol) I've always had to spell my name for people so I'm use to it and didn't think it was a big deal.

Hello everyone, still fairly new here and earning my ears!

My name is Corrine, so out of curiousity how would YOU pronouce it:

Like
1. Core-in

or like

2. Core-een

I am constantly getting people mixing it up. No matter how many times someone will pronounce and hear it the "right" way, they still call it the other way!

I'll let you know after a few responses how I pronouce it. (gotta get those post numbers up anyway!)

Corrine
(mom to a Hailey and a Jacob!)

Sorry, but I hate "creative" spellings. If you want to give your child a "different" name, then do that. Changing the spelling of a well-known, already established name doesn't make it different, it makes it misspelled. Quite frankly, I find that it makes the parents look uneducated. This is, of course, just my opinion.

Aren't you brave! It is none of my business if someone chooses to creatively name their child, but it does seem odd for parents to purposely choose an unusual spelling for their child's name then complain that no one can spell it properly.

My pet peeve is unwanted nicknames. My daughter's name is "Natalie" and some people insist on calling her "Nat" or - ugh - "Natty". I want to say "If I wanted people to call her Nat, I'd have put that on her birth certificate." But I just smile in and say "I don't think she'll answer to that - you should probably call her by her name."

I also tried my best to give my other kids names with little or no nicknaming potential.

I have to admit - my daughter doesn't really complain about being called "Nat". I think my feelings on the matter are somewhat tainted by the fact that people always call me by the shortened version of my name, even though I have never introduced or signed myself that way!

To me that looks like Cor-een because with the short "i," it should traditionally be spelled Corinne.

2. Core-een, but only because that's how a girl I went to HS pronounced it. She used to say like 'clorine' except with core in front LOL.

I agree. Why complain when you chose to spell it "creatively?" I used to think odd spellings were so cool when I was younger but as I get older I dislike trendy names and spellings more and more. I've had my last name butchered my entire life, but never my first name thankfully. Of course, I think there is truly only one way to spell my first name, and if someone tried to spell it differently, they would be completely insane!

I also somewhat agree with you about nicknames. Sometimes it seems natural to shorten someone's name, but I am a firm believer in (1) naming someone what you will call them and (2) calling someone what they introduce themselves to you as.

Why do you think they uneducated?

My mother was going to spell my name Kym but she didn't want me to always have to tell people it's Kim with a y.

AMEN!!!

You sound like my mom and I. We both detest the nickname usually associated with my name. However, it didn't stop people from giving me personalized gifts with "Mandy" on it as a child. :(

Amazingly in my late 20s, I am still correcting people about my name.
It's not that hard people....I don't have a creative spelling...I don't even have a creative pronounciation....so why are you calling me Mandy when I introduced myself as Amanda?!?! Some people do it to torment me, I know it.

I'm not a big fan of creative or unusual spellings. It does seem rather odd when parents complain about their child's name never being spelled right when they opt for a creative spelling. To each their own and this is why we have over 30 flavors of ice cream! :p

I go by Tammy (not Tami) but my given name is Tamera. NOT Tamara and it rhymes with camera just like it's spelled, it is NOT pronounced Tumaira or Tamarra. I have gone the last 4 years since I married DH being called Tumaira Christianson. Wrong on both counts. Even if I spell both names and pronounce them people STILL get both wrong. My niece's name is Kyrstyne pronounced Kirsten. I personally think her parents didn't do her any favors there.

My oldest DS is Sean ( traditional Irish spelling) and most everyone gets it right except for a CM at Disney, he called him Seen. My middle DS is Aidan and I get Ad-i-an, Ad-ri-an, and occasionally an A-dam. It is pronounced just like it is spelled. Aid-an. The other way of spelling it is -en. one is English and one is Irish. My youngest DS is Evan which is a no brainer, and yes I am aware that they all end in -an. They were the only names that sounded good with our last name. Now if we ever get that girl we want I need to come up with an -an girls name. :teeth: although DH really wants Emily Elizabeth.

I dont think my names unusual but I do always get it spelt wrong

Im Anna and I get Anna, Hanna, Hanna, Hanne

I would have though anna is quiet easy but apparently not

My last name is spelled "wrong". Very annoying.

Mine used to be a creative spelling - Kathryn - but now almost all the Kathryns I meet spell it that way.

Being a teacher I have had a few unusual spelling names in my class. I think the most unusual was a girl whose name was pronounced Sarah but spelt Sarha.
