OCTOBER 30th & NOVEMBER 3rd Cruises (FE and Meets)

I see alot of you book multiple cruises a year how do u save or afford that i would looove to do that but i have issues saving. if only i can say no to always going out to eat or doing things with friends maybe i could save. But i hate always saying no so how do u all do it any tips?? I can get the cruise always paid off its all the extra spending money or do u not take alot of spending money down? just wondering

For us, we don't go out a ton, and we live on a budget that includes saving for trips. We also had a 7-year span that we didn't take vacations and had a REALLY tight budget. Now we have kids, and we choose to loosen up a bit, as we know that memories are important and neither of our families really did much.

Find out what will work for you and go for it!

We are getting off the ship and doing Senor frog with myelton(morgan and her family) and maybe going to the market for some shopping who knows as of yet but senor frogs for sure. i am really excited the trip is coming up but still need to save more money.

I do a few things to save because like most people we are on a budget too.
1. I have a cash back credit card. I use it instead of my debit card or writing checks. I always deduct what I buy in my check book at the time of purchase like I would a check. That way when I pay the bill the money is there to pay it off 100%. I always go online and pay it off early each month.

Different cards will give up to 5% cash back on specific items. Right now I get 3% back on all groceries and gas. It adds up fast. Everytime I get to $100 due me I send for the check. Its easy. Many cash back cards give a small limit around $500. They figure people cant earn that much back at $500a month spending. You can get around that by paying it off every week on line so you are ready for the next weeks shopping. No interest paid that way.

2. ALL change goes in the piggy bank and I roll it myself every 6 months and turn it in to the back for bills. Which I save for vacations only just like the cash back money. Dont take it to one of those machines that count it for you or they charge you some of your money to do it. Kids love to help count change and it helps their math.

3. When I use cash I save ALL one dollar bills. NO exceptions!! You don't miss a dollar or two.
4. Here we have returnable pop cans and bottles. I know youpay the deposit when you purchase them but when I return them I keep the bottle deposit money for vacations. I usually only have 2 or 3 dollars worth at a time to turn in but the change goe sin the piggy bank and one goes in the envelopes for ones.

5. I use cents off coupons in the store. If I save $5 on a shopping trip, then I take $5 out of the bank and put in the vacation money. I was going to buy the product anyway, so what I save can go towards vacations.

6. A once a year garage sale where the entire family contributes can be a big boost. If you have younger kids, let them sell some lemonade or home made cookies. Put a big sign they make saying we are saving for a Disney cruise.
You'll be surprised how many people will buy from them or even hand them a little change for the penny bank.

Thats how I save. NEVER touch the vacation money. Have a special savings account for it. Each month deposit what ever you managed to save. Each month try to top the last months deposit. Also when your paycheck goes in the bank make it a bill to deposit $20.

I know this doesnt sound like much but it really adds up.
We also have the Save the Change program at our bank in case I use a debit card it rounds it up and puts it in the savings.

GREAT suggestions Kathy !!

Another thing to think about is age. We are 62. We are not cruising with kids every time as they are 30 and 34. When they were little we camped for vacations. We saw 48 states doing that. DH says he took them to the lower 48 and they are on their own for Alaska and Hawaii. He has long said he would cruise to Alaska when Disney did it,
so,
they are
and we are going.

Same for Hawaii.

We had no vacations at all in 2003 and 2004. None.
He was building a business. So this year we have 3 cruises to get caught up.

But usually it is one a year and just the two of us.

We do this as well, and have a separate savings account just for vacations. We did have to cancel one vacation for this year. We looked at what we had planned, and what would be the most return for the investment. It isn't fun, but it is just part of life. The economy is doing a job on many families' finances, unfortunately. I'm thankful that we are able to enjoy these cruises with our kids now. Many of my friends now have children that have year-round competitive sports and it doesn't leave much time for family. We are enjoying it while we can!

Ok went thru the new list and I need kids favorite characters from these DISers:

Dagny
Flatzkids
Itsmedes

Thanks :thumbsup2

Are we going to be cutting off the FE to new members?
We are at around 30 staterooms now.

Good morning!

Wow! Awesome suggestions on different ways to save, Kathy. There were several ideas I never thought of! I really appreciate the suggestions. With this hot, hot weather we're having in St Louis right now, I think I'll nudge my DS (11) into doing a lemonade stand with a sign that says he's saving for Disney. We usually save his birthday, Christmas, and any extra earned money for his own souveniers. However, this past year, he's invested in a bigger game system and blew through his money...

As far as shore excursions, I'm in a quandry of what to do - which is why I threw the question out there. :confused3 I've never been to Nassau. Every time the commercial for Atlantis has come on the TV, my DS says "when can we go...?" Well when we switched this cruise from the Mexican Riveria to a Bahama cruise, we thought this is it. Here's our chance to go to Atlantis. Then we had our pleasant surprise join our family in October, last year (DS #2) and now I don't know what to do. Drew will just be turing 1 when we board the ship. My BF and DS (11) are deadset about going to Atlantis. I'm on the fence because of being in complete "mom" mode and not just being able to relax and enjoy myself. I'll be worrying about nap times, sunburns, what we can actually do with a one year old... I just want to make the best decision for my littlest Bear and what he would like to do and what would make me most comfortable. Ugh. What to do, what to do??

Anyway, so excited that we're at 145 days to go... Started working on my FE ideas... YAY!!!!

Hope everyone has a cool, nice week!

Angela

Excellent suggestions, Kathy. Another way we save money is by being on a budget which we plan on two pay periods per month. When there is a month with an extra pay period, that is the money that goes for vacation.
:cheer2:

I used to love those "extra pay periods" they were always my vacation fund. I am now on a monthly pay period, so no "extra" check sigh... but now I pay my "vacation bill" every month instead.

wow awesome ideas on saving alot of them i never thought of doing and excited to try out one or two. Thanks soo much!! Looking forward to cruising with all of you. Hope everyone has had a great start on the week! Like ajaysmom says St.Louis is very hot right now today is suppose to be 97. I love how it goes from chilly to hot where was spring in all of this??? well back to work i go lunch breaks go so fast when you look up disney stuff lol :):):):)

Kathy, How's your dog doing? Did the surgery go well?

I too am looking forward to an update! Not only how did the dog do, bit how did YOU do?

I also had one more idea about saving for a cruise--we always book an 11C guarenteed not a specific cabin. We have had three adults in that cabin and our son had his wife and daughter with a pack-n-play had one also and did fine. When we want an ocean view we go up on deck.

I know everyone makes the choices they prefer, but thought I would share this too.

Hi everyone!
I am needing to get caught up. Haven't read the thread in a month or two. We just moved from Charleston to the Atlanta area so I have been busy dealing with all that. Now we are pretty settled and I can have some free time again. Time to start getting excited for our cruise!:thumbsup2

Hopefully the time will pass quickly for everyone since summer is here. We are going to Michigan over the 4th of July and then the kiddos have a camp or two. Then school starts. Then it is Mickey...here we come!

Guess its time to get creative on the FE gifts!

It is good so far. We just got here Thurs pm and our stuff was delivered Saturday so I am still trying to learn my way around. The house is mostly unpacked. The beauty of being in a rental for a year is that I don't have to unpack everything we own!
My 3 yr old is doing a sports camp and my DD12 is doing a volleyball camp. Should be fun!

DH and I got debt free a few years ago, thanks to Dave Ramsey's program Financial Peace University. Good timing, as I lost my salaried management position at WDW 2 years ago with a huge amount of layoffs. I am back to work, only PT, but we live mostly on one income. I am a huge couponer, so we save 50-80% on groceries, and 70-100%-often with a profit-on items I purchase at drugstores. All of that, plus the fact that we live in Florida and don't have to pay for airfare makes a huge difference. I can share my favorite coupon blogs to get tips to save even more...a lot of budgeting. We still eat out once or so per week. We just manage everything with our long term goals in mind-retirement, college for Kayla, and of course vacations.

Stephanie

PS We also book the cheapest cabin. For our Oct cruise, we wanted the inside stateroom with the real-time virtual porthole-crazy, but the oceanview rooms were actually less when we booked. We use our room to sleep, get ready, and may be nap a little, but the rest of the time we are on deck or out and about. I haven't even gotten a FL discount on any of our cruises (however, we do manage to get cast discounts-but not right now with 2 ships away from Port Canaveral, and only the Dream sailing...new ship=no discounts so we booked at full rate when we were onboard in Dec (with onboard rebooking discounts and perks). Another tip...rebook a cruise while on board. You pay a smaller deposit, earn an onboard credit, and you have the flexibility to move the cruise around if needed. We also try to book during non-peak times...thankfully DD is in 1st, soon to be 2nd grade...I pull her out, as DH and I can't really get much time off during spring break and summer because all the tourists come to play where we work...not easy to get 2 schedules off at WDW during peak times.

Congrats on the move! 3 years later, we moved from 10 miles away from our old house, and we still don't have everything unpacked...ready for a yard sale, just must find the time!

I am a very poor couponer. I clip the coupons but then they just sit on the kitchen counter. Someone at the market had told me about southernsaver.com and how it matches coupons to the store sales. Is that one of the sites you use?

Extreme couponing is bizarre to me. Why do I need tons of stuff when I have to pay for the storage of it?? Don't get me wrong, my coupon binder stays in my trunk except for when I am adding/removing them so that I have them when I go to a store.

I shop the sales with my coupons. I also follow coupon blogs so that I can get some great deals. I have even started buying items for my mom as I have several months worth of personal care items but still can find incredible (free or almost free) deals. I then cook from our pantry/freezer. I do buy fresh fruits, veggies, dairy, and bread weekly. Not having to have a certain brand helps a great deal! Our grocery budget has been cut in half. I need to do a better job of saving it. I usually find somewhere else to spend it!
