So. How long do we think these flight reductions are going to last? Since it looks like all of the big hubs are being impacted (for my house that means Chicago, Detroit, and Orlando.)

Which means all the smaller, more regional airports are affected because they all fly through hubs…

Honestly if they're still going into Jan (or even Dec for my Orlando Informer trip) even if my flight isn't cancelled I think I'd rather drive just due to safety. I don't want a stressed out ATC that hasn't been paid in 2-3 months to be responsible for my flight's safety...

Agreed! Was taking with DH about this last night. It’s a 12.5 hour drive for us, so would prefer to fly. But we have done the drive so many times and it’s an easy drive. Plus, if we end up driving I can bring more recovery items, so there’s that. I’m a carryon girl. I despise checking luggage so avoid it as much as possible. At the end of the day…I will not risk it. If flights are still an issue…100% driving.

This is an important point. We have about a 21 hour drive (plus weather/traffic issues) so I'm pretty certain that driving would be out for us. Plus, I 1million percent do not want to be stuck in the car for that long with DD twice in a week.

I feel like it's unlikely that things will be shut down for that long, so what I'm really curious about is how long we thing the reduced schedule will last once things are back to whatever passes for normal these days.



AND how far ahead of time will airlines cancel things? Because getting stuck, just days before a flight, having to find a new one would be expensive and frustrating.

The holidays are going to force a solution, I think. Thanksgiving travel impacts will affect a LOT more people than those who are traveling now, and that's when you'll see it come to a head. I'd be surprised if it isn't resolved between then and Christmas. That said, if it isn't, I doubt we'd drive just because weather is such a huge question mark coming from New England in January. We'd still fly even if it means taking a few extra legs or extra time to make our way there.

Yea, we are now starting to add driving in as an option. It's about a 14 hour drive for us. We made the drive one time from Houston to Orlando. Not a fan. LOL. You get into Florida and get excited, and then realize you still have to drive all the way across and down. The drive there wouldn't be an issue as we can leave the Saturday before and break it up over two days. But the drive home would suck. Legs sore from the runs and then having to try to get home ASAP for work.

Driving is out for me too - it's over 20h without stopping and I'm going solo. Luckily for me my connecting flight would be in Toronto but that just means I can be pretty sure of making it to a hub - not MCO.

As for how far ahead flights cancel - we haven't had a shutdown here but we've had a few strikes in the last couple of years. Cancellations tend to be based on making sure they have crew/ aircraft where they need them - so my guess is it will be all over the place - some flights a week out - some less than 48h. Also wouldn't surprise me if carriers try to put bigger planes on routes where they can - reduce frequency but minimize passenger capacity decreases on popular routes.

I wouldn't be surprised if airlines kept a reduced schedule, etc. after the shutdown ends, just because they can. Like all the prices going up doing Covid, and then just staying there.

Then again, fewer flights = less money. But then agaaaain, they could charge more.

We’ll be driving about 20 hours no matter what, bringing DD and her car back to school after winter break. If our flight home is cancelled guess we’ll have to stay in FL

ADR day for me today! They seemed to be wide open… I have Beak and Barrel, Chef Arts, yak & yeti and a few more. There is going to be a lot of eating involved in this trip

All this talk of airport shutdowns has me worried… defo cant drive from the UK! Fingers crossed it works out soon, and sorry for anyone that is caught up in it.

I think they’re trying to cut back on things such as Detroit to Orlando on Delta has 8 non-stop flights offered on the day I leave. And while I understand that those planes then go elsewhere, that seems like a lot.

If your plane is flying directly into MCO and not stopping in a different US city first, I can’t imagine there would be much of an issue.

31 hours without stopping for me… so that’s not really an option. Even if I wanted to do it, I can’t take off another 2-3 days each way driving. I’m not worried yet, it feels far away. I am regretting not booking a direct flight- double the chances of an issue.

We’re a 22 hour drive to WDW so definitely hoping not to drive. We have a long trip so there is wiggle room but I’m still hoping our flights stay as scheduled. We’re booked on the first flight out so I know that plane will be sitting that the gate overnight.

Our flight on Wednesday was delayed but Delta handled it well. TSA was actually fine, the poor agents seem beaten down. It feels different this time for sure.

Luckily for us it’s only an 8 hour drive, so we always drive. But the year of the Georgia “Snowpacalypse,” we had to stay at WDW an extra day! Even after that day, driving back got dicey about halfway home. You gotta do what you gotta do!

Agreed. I couldn't believe how available everything was! Although, DH and I split duties and I had full availability when I got online right at 6, but he says 10 minutes later when he finally got on, many of the good time slots at least had disappeared
