Obesity and IOA's Rollercoasters

Actually, statistics show that more than 50% Americans are overweight and more than 30% are considered obese.

Therefore, if the theme park engineers and the manufacturers were smart, they should build as the trend, not based on what was or what someone summizes the average size.

Theme parks have created criteria for handicapped, hearing impaired, etc. Isn't obesity a form of medical condition? Therefore, shouldn't their be a criteria for the condition? It seems to be the fair thing to do and as statistics show, it seems to be the smart thing to do.

Also, if you walk around WDW and US, you will see many sizes and shapes of people who visit. Not everyone is 12 yo and not everyone is size 8 or a 28" waist.

How I see it is; no matter what your size, the money is still green!

I certainly am not looking to debate either, and I am overweight by quite a bit...and I have no problem fitting on Hulk or Dragon and I don't need the extra-large seats. So you're right, not everyone is a size 8, but they have made accomodations for those that are WELL above the norm. as far as size goes...I don't think they have to accomodate whatever statistic it is that categorizes whomever it is that can't fit in the bigger seats, I mean...how big can they make them and still have them be safe for the rest of their guests? It's a middle ground thing. They aren't excluding overweight people, I'm an example. But there IS a limit.
I also agree that being overweight is not a medical condition. It's very sad, and very frustrating, but very few people are fat solely because of a thyroid condition alone. It can be controlled and reversed, with lots of work and will-power.
I don't think accepting it is the way to go, as a rule...not as an idividual and not as a nation.

I'm sorry if for anyone reading, it is an abolute that they are built too large to ride, and are medically unable to change that, but I believe, as I said, that Universal has done their best to accomodate as many guests of different sizes as possible. I think you will find that there are very few guests comparitively who are actually too large to fit, but seats everywhere can only be made so large. (theaters, buses, rides, etc.)

Anyone who is interested in getting healthier and maybe trimming down might consider joining the WISH challenge here on these boards. It's AMAZING how many people are on these boards that are dieting, exercising and providing support for eachother! I'm glad I found it! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

First of all I agree 110% with what Laura said. I actually was reading about it and I found it to that actually 65% are overweight. Read the papers, it is the one with the black print. I think Pnelson is being pretty harsh with what he says, but I plan to stay out of that one.

I most certainly am not going to ask your weight Msdisney, but it can't be as bad as you might out to be because if you can sit in those seats fine, you gotta be in pretty good shape (compliment). Those seats are not large, they aren't even bigger than the reg. seats. I am not blind, I saw the seats next to each other. As someone commented earlier, the only difference is the double seatbelt for larger people in the upper part. Not everyone is just fat in the upper part. A lot of people, inlcuding me, are well rounded. I am not that big so don't think I am like an elephant, but the seats are very small and tight. I can say Universal has done a absolutely fantastic job catering to the handicap. This is an illness for all of you who think this is just a little thing that can be solved easily. I can easily fit in a bus, movie theater, etc. so I am not that big. I am saying the seats are unnessarily large. If you didn't know this fact, then this might make you think: B & M created the Hulk, correct. Well did you know this is the only B & M launched roller coaster . Did you know that B & M did not create or favor this idea. Well Universal still did it, I guess with some other manufacturer. Universal has the power to do whatever they wish because it is their idea! All B & M is is a manufacturer. They have to do what Universal says. Why did Universal go with B & M? Because that company is known for their smooth roller coasters. Yes they are a good company. But they do lack the seats. You can't tell me that they made a striving effort to accomodate bigger people. I laugh at that. Those seats are extremely uncomfortable for overweight people. You can sit there and deny my words and laura's, but is true. 65% is overweight in America. Yeah it is sad, but what do you plan to do about it? Times have changed, and those seats should accomodate overweight people. I know it can be done. When there is a will there is a way.

Now about the height thing. First of all if you haven't noticed, they said 52" and up! The only question they have is inverted roller coasters. Obviously they don't want you to lose your legs so they have to gurantee safety. The reason for the height req. is not just because of safety like someone could get thrown around to much, but also because of kids. When they put up that sign, that stops many kids dead in their tracks. They have to insure that kids don't go on because they could get thrown around way to much or they can't indure that type of ride. But look, Universal accomodates them by creating the flying unicorn just for them. They need larger seats. Why should overweight people be pushed to the side. Hell if I was 100 lbs. I would still fight this, this isn't fair.

I look at this problem as very simple-If you can't fit on the ride as it's designed, then don't go on

You want to talk about fairness, this sentence defies that. Those words shouldn't even be said, they should do something about it. If Universal could go through all that trouble to make many things excessible for handicap and succeed so well, then this should be no obstacle. For God's sake they even made MIB for handicap, how amazing and cool is that. They should change those seats. I shouldn't be cast off the ride for some silly stupid thing like that. B & M makes small seats. I can go on rockin roller coaster absolutely fine. Vekoma took many things into consideration. Look at RRC. They made it for overweight people and any height. They were so smart because they thought, well what about tall people? Ok we will make the front row have a lot of room. If you don't like the front, then tough _ _ _ _. At least they did that! They can't do that for every row because then the coaster would be way to long and then the coaster can't perform. This is a different case. Hulk doesn't do that (for weight). Plus RRC has the harnesses with no seatbelts gurantee-ing that all will fit. What about the seatbelts? Well they are there, they just aren't seatbelts, they are 2 more locks in the harness. Vekoma was a lot smarter. And if anyone comments back on here saying "well if you love it so much, go on that then" well then your wasting your breath because if Vekoma can do it, B & M should do it.

I am not just speaking for me, I am speaking for others. Come on people, stop thinking about yourselves and think of others (general comment not talking about the people in this thread). How can Vekoma do it so well and B & M lacks that. There is a way to make it so everyone fits and everyone is safe, Vekoma did it. Problem solved. And why can't the seats be in every row. That is really unfair, it is like teasing overweight people. Oh you can't go in the first row. Why not? But I can live with having at least one big seat in each row. If the parties have to be split up, oh well. All the seats should be big, but I don't know all the specific's about the handling of the coaster with that. I imagine it would work just fine. Think of this from an objective point of view if you can't see it from your own skinny first person view. Plus if they made all the seats big, that would problably make the lines go way smoother than having to go to the third and sixth row. Oh and here is a question, why do you think the hulk and DD have the seats outside for you to actually try whereas RRC doesn't have them at all? Ever think of that?

No but this is a discussion board. We are discussing this issue. It seems to be pretty interesting because people have different opinions on the matter. Plus this has never been brought up on here. I think this is actually a very different topic that everyone should talk about. Always on the message boards is the same old same old that are general/normal/reg. questions and comments. This is a lot different. No one has ever talked about this. Maybe people have be to shy/embarassed to write about this.

Hi Guys, Been away from this site for a while, but I check in once and a while.

I am a fattie, ok I said it. Now that is over with.....

I always ask for the larger seats, I have always been treated very well by Universal Employees.

Last fall while taking the HHN VIP tour, I told our guide that I needed to sit in the "fat" row. She told me of a funny story about an "exotic" dancer that wanted to ride the Hulk, but do to size retraints (upper chest) she needed the larger seat. I have seen big men, not fat, but large chest size have to move to the larger seats. (once I had the embarassment of 2 employees try to squeeze me into a smaller seat, it worked, but I turned into a uniboob, and it was very uncomfortable).

But this wont be the case on my next trip, cause I am having a gastric bypass this fall and I cant wait to ride those front rows again!!!!!!

First of all, I'm a "she" not a "he". Secondly, I don't think I am advocating a "first person" "thinking of myself" attitude anymore than you are. The seats are not big enougt to accomodate "you", therefore, you think that Universal should make them bigger even though other overweight people have chimed in and said they can fit. And again, you tell someone else to "get over" a serious phobia and suggest they go to another restaurant. I bet if you had that same phobia and wanted to go to that particular restaurant, you would expect Universal to make accomodations for "you".

And, straying off topic, I don't equate handicapped and obesity as being in the same category. One is something one can't help(handicapped) and one is something of one's own doing (obesity).

How about this: Conversation to yourself when you are at Universal:
Self: I really love Hulk, in fact, it is my favorite roller coaster. However, it is uncomfortable for me because I am too overweight. Maybe if I exercised and ate more healthy, the next time I visit I can go on it. In the meantime, there are many other attractions and rides that I can go on.

Yes, it is a discussion board, but some of the "opinions" are somewhat nasty and unnecessary. My main job is to make sure that the "discussions" are civil and contained. I don't like babysitting and this one has run it's course. And it HAS been discussed before, many times, only to disintegrate into a name calling session like this one has.

Nuff said.
