The following is a quote from the hillary board today:

"Doesn't matter what the rabid BO supporters think or say."

so now we are kool aid, latte drinking , rose colored glass wearing and RABID!!!

nice

I said this on another thread today-and I think I'm going to cross post it. We ALL need to be very careful this election season about our enthusiasm and/or frustration and not allow it to get personal. If we want to continue to be able to discuss this stuff here-we can't have people insulting each other and garnering points.

I think the boards this election season are going to be like playoff hockey, penalties are going to get called early and often to send a message.

We all have to play within the rules, or the game will be over.

My view of the Reverend is that he is someone who has monopolized on the position and popularity of an acquaintance to try and make more of a name for himself. When Obama started taking off, Wright started stepping up his spiel. Now why someone would want to become famous for these words is beyond me, but none the less he is famous now.

In reading Obama's books, I know he does not share the rantings of the Wright and I doubt anyone with Obama's education and position would stay in a church where these type of rants were a regular occurrence. I do wish that he would take a stronger stance against Wright, for the purpose of soothing undecided voters, but it has no bearing on my opinion or support for him.

Thanks, Fits, for the gentle reminder. I'd be so sad if a thread was locked...and none of us wants points, so....It's worth being careful. :goodvibes

You know, if this were Hillary we were talking about, I wouldn't think she shared every belief with her pastor. Or McCain. I think all 3 candidates have their own minds.

I would still like an explanation, of course.

have you read "dreams from my father"? it tells how obama came to that area in chicago and the church....
I don't get rev.wright...but reading about the conditions and attitude in the area gives a bit of perspective.
I don't know that anyone who has not experienced the discrimination can really understand..... it seems like it is a kind of shock and awe preaching...trying to restore confidence/spirit and motivate to move forward....

Just don't read it. I've become adept and scrolling right over it. I'm going to need a new mouse soon. Yep, something might be said that I would want to read or respond to. It's just not worth wading through the rest to find it.

No, I haven't. How did it happen?

you really should read it...i can't explain it well in a post.
he moved to chicago from NYC to become a community organizer....

he worked with many church leaders...... but was very moved by Rev. Wright when he attended his service.....it was a service about the Audacity of Hope....

It's the usual few who deride the supporters.

Obama responds:

Barack Obama: On My Faith and My Church

The pastor of my church, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who recently preached his last sermon and is in the process of retiring, has touched off a firestorm over the last few days. He's drawn attention as the result of some inflammatory and appalling remarks he made about our country, our politics, and my political opponents.

Let me say at the outset that I vehemently disagree and strongly condemn the statements that have been the subject of this controversy. I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies. I also believe that words that degrade individuals have no place in our public dialogue, whether it's on the campaign stump or in the pulpit. In sum, I reject outright the statements by Rev. Wright that are at issue.

Because these particular statements by Rev. Wright are so contrary to my own life and beliefs, a number of people have legitimately raised questions about the nature of my relationship with Rev. Wright and my membership in the church. Let me therefore provide some context.

As I have written about in my books, I first joined Trinity United Church of Christ nearly twenty years ago. I knew Rev. Wright as someone who served this nation with honor as a United States Marine, as a respected biblical scholar, and as someone who taught or lectured at seminaries across the country, from Union Theological Seminary to the University of Chicago. He also led a diverse congregation that was and still is a pillar of the South Side and the entire city of Chicago. It's a congregation that does not merely preach social justice but acts it out each day, through ministries ranging from housing the homeless to reaching out to those with HIV/AIDS.

Most importantly, Rev. Wright preached the gospel of Jesus, a gospel on which I base my life. In other words, he has never been my political advisor; he's been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn.

The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation. When these statements first came to my attention, it was at the beginning of my presidential campaign. I made it clear at the time that I strongly condemned his comments. But because Rev. Wright was on the verge of retirement, and because of my strong links to the Trinity faith community, where I married my wife and where my daughters were baptized, I did not think it appropriate to leave the church.

Let me repeat what I've said earlier. All of the statements that have been the subject of controversy are ones that I vehemently condemn. They in no way reflect my attitudes and directly contradict my profound love for this country.

With Rev. Wright's retirement and the ascension of my new pastor, Rev. Otis Moss, III, Michelle and I look forward to continuing a relationship with a church that has done so much good. And while Rev. Wright's statements have pained and angered me, I believe that Americans will judge me not on the basis of what someone else said, but on the basis of who I am and what I believe in; on my values, judgment and experience to be President of the United States.

Great explanation. Thanks Barack.

So every time we see a post about "Obama's pastor"..we need to make sure we correct the name to: Rev. Otis Moss, III. The other pastor is out to pasture. :goodvibes

And on another topic...I'm not reading the "other" thread anymore. Way, way, way too much anger. I really was surprised today-aren't both candidates Democrats?

I do wish he'd said this in person today. I think it would have helped even more.

He did indicate that he was not in the church when these things of question were said... I assumed as much, but it was good for him to say that as well.

This is from a supporter commenting on Obama's statement about his ex-Pastor:

"We will have our nominee in the next two weeks and we can get back to being a happy family." - Donna Brazille (sp) on CNN today

This is from a supporter commenting on Obama's statement about his ex-Pastor:

Good statement, but the Obama campaign is going to have to hit the press hard with the He's THE pastor inaccuracy. He's retired, he's not the pastor, Obama has denounced him, next issue.

I just read on the Pastor thread he'll be doing some interviews too. He is approaching this entirely the correct way. I applaud him.

Me too! I read yesterday he has been talking to Gore too. :thumbsup2

Has Donna Brazile come forward as a Super to say she will be throwing her support behind him? My family was all yapping away when she was speaking so I did not hear what she said.

I think she's like Pelosi - they haven't come out and endorsed Obama but it's pretty clear who they are supporting.
