NYC... safe walking area?

no you would not be safe at that time of night alone

I guess you don't live in new york

Wow you clearly do not know ANYTHING about the city. That area is perfectly fine to walk around in- my 15 year old and her friends walk around that part of the city and a lot of other places on their own with NO issues- they say they feel safer in the city than in the suburbs!
OP you will be FINE walking around NYC!!

Off topic, WOW 250 a night for a night in NYC? I guess I will save more pennies behore trying to visit there.

250 a night is pretty reasonable for NYC- we stayed at Marriott Marquis for 400+ a night. The Millennium was pretty reasonable, got that on priceline one weekend for 179 a night!

NYC (and especially midtown) is extremely safe.

And now for the facts, not the party line from the local tourism boosters, who don't want you to know what an absolute disaster DeBlasio has been in terms of law and order.

some people just don't want to know the true facts

I have to say being a river away I travel into the city often. And in the last year crime as spiked especially in the "touristy" areas. I wouldn't walk at 11pm at night with just me and my daughter, and I'm a pretty tough chick. Take a cab if it's late night, Time Square is pretty bustling especially now in warmer weather you should be fine. Be alert, aware, not paranoid. Enjoy the 2days, and for your daughter "break a leg!":thumbsup2

some people just don't want to know the true facts

Oh my goodness. Those are stories about NYC as a whole, which includes 4 other boroughs. That doesn't mean that the OP and her daughter are in danger. Crime may be up, but it's still lower than it was years ago, and the OP and her daughter will be fine.

And bsblady01, we are not denying that crime exists. And we do know the facts, but I spent 30 years walking around that area, and I was never a victim of a crime. And that's what I stated.

And now for the facts, not the party line from the local tourism boosters, who don't want you to know what an absolute disaster DeBlasio has been in terms of law and order.

By "facts", the first article says that most of the killings and shootings have been concentrated in five police precincts - one in the Bronx, one in Queens and three in Brooklyn. OP didn't say they'd be going to those areas so I'm not sure that adds much cause for concern. Maybe you meant this quote - "But overall, crime has dropped 11% in most major crime categories, including burglary, robbery, rape, grand larceny and auto theft." Nope, that doesn't work for you either. I guess that shows that headlines aren't the whole story.

I live in Chicago and haven't been to NYC in 4 years, so I'm clearly not a "tourism booster". I'm sure there are lots of articles you could google that would imply that I'm fleeing a hail of bullets when I walk outside. Since I don't live in a neighborhood like Englewood or Back of the Yards, I feel pretty comfortable taking my chances.

If I were the OP, I would appreciate advice from those with actual first-hand experience of the area in question over those who seem to be spouting random opinions based on, well, not much.

That second article is from 2013. DeBlasio took office in 2014.

Relatively speaking, that's actually cheap for NYC, especially for a last minute booking.

Of course I do not want to see the crime rates creep up and won't discuss my opinions of the current Mayor, but these articles are still talking about a tiny percentage of the city population of nearly 8.5 million. I still stand that the city is generally a safe place to visit, especially the area where the OP is going to be and I am not a local tourism booster giving their honest, un-jaded opinion.

Ummmm... Sad as it is, I can probably dig up just as many similar stories for Orlando. I won't waste my time though. You OBVIOUSLY have no interest in what anyone else says.

You could get those exact same articles from literally any city in the U.S. Teen robbed in broad daylight? You don't think that happens anywhere else? Just New York? And we all know that people are only raped in Manhattan.

Give it a rest. No one said there isn't any crime in Manhattan. There almost 3 million people in Manhattan every day. I'm sure you could find similar stories about every big city.

You should probably read the articles you linked to. None of them are indicative of the area where the OP will be as being unsafe to walk with her daughter.

You've got an all-alone drunk woman being targeted. Several muggings in Central Park at night (I will go so far as to say CP isn't a place to walk around at night...not sure I'd hang there during the day either)...and some racially charged crimes.

The OP will be fine as long as she uses common sense (stay sober, stay where there are crowds, be heads up etc).
