NYC... safe walking area?

Recently dd14 and I stayed by ourselves around the corner from there at Wingate by Wyndham on 35th ST. We saw other hotel when we walked to the corner. Neither of us are from NYC and felt totally safe going to our hotel both nights between 11pm and midnight. One night we took the subway and one night we walked from Times Square and passed the Wyndham New Yorker which is why I remember it. I think we stayed at the Wyndham New Yorker once but it was called the New Yorker Hotel. I don't remember ever not feeling safe but that trip dh was with us and he grew up in Midtown Manhattan.

Thanks for all the information! Given our late arrival time on Tuesday evening and the 10am audition on Wednesday, I think it'll probably be easier to stay at the Windham than at the Manhattan/Times Square (although we could grab a cab up on Tuesday and then take the subway down on Wed. morning), regardless of how much I like to be "in" the craziness of Times Square!

I am not anxious about staying in NYC, in general. I grew up outside of Boston so spent my high school and college weekends roaming the city, and lived in San Francisco for 3 years, so we know how to be "city-smart" when it comes to walking around-but I am not familiar with this specific area near Penn Station. We have logged about 30 hotel nights in NYC in the past 6 or so years but stayed further uptown (8th Ave and W51st St, 6th Ave and W57th, suites IN Times Square, hotel on Central Park South, etc.) while DD has been at dance intensives. I wasn't sure how far downtown the crowds and hustle&bustle of Times Square and the theater district would extend, and how late into the evening. I just didn't want to be booking a hotel that was off the beaten path, or in a questionable area. If we stick to walking down 7th or 8th Ave. after the theater, we should be OK, yes? (and if I feel creeped out walking that late, we'll take a cab :car: ).

You should be fine. You know the ins and outs of keeping safe in the city. I've walked from Times Square to Penn Station after going to Broadway shows quite often, and every time I've done it, it feels like it's the middle of the day. You won't be alone, that's for sure. I usually stick to 7th Ave., but that's just me.

I guess you don't live in new york

But you don't live in NYC, do you? Trust me, the area the OP wants to stay in is very safe. I worked in that area for 30 years. There were certain times of the year I didn't leave the office until after 10 PM, and I didn't fear for my life. I just walked down the block with many other people and went to Penn Station, got on my train, and went home. And there were many nights I went to Broadway shows, left the theater after 11 PM, and walked down 7th Ave. to Penn Station, and again, never feared for my life. Living in the suburbs or Westchester or upstate NY is not like living or working in NYC.

You'll be fine. 7th is probably slightly better than 8th, crowd wise (in that there is more).

I agree the stuff you see on the news about the shooting's in the subway and pushing people in front of an on coming subway freaks me out a little. we go to the city a few times a year but we either drive or take metro north down. I had a family member get mugged and cut up in the city a few year's ago, so that makes me a little uneasy

But that isn't happening every day. All we are saying is unless you are in the area a lot, you really can't tell how safe it is or isn't.

Another Native New Yorker here you'll be perfectly safe as others who truly know the area have stated. I get so weary of people not in the know needlessly scaring others.

NYC has been wonderful since the Guiliani days. I think upstate NY has more to worry about lately with 2 violent convicts on the loose. That just goes to show anything can happen anywhere. Don't get " big city " paranoid.

Well, we know you don't (you've said numerous times that you are at least two hours north of the city).

Disclaimer - I do not live in NYC. I do however have family that live there and one, my brother, just moved from the area under discussion. I feel perfectly safe walking around when visiting him. I've walked home from the theatre with him and/or his wife and never felt worried about it. The walk from Penn Station to the hotel is also totally safe (and very, very short).

Good luck to your daughter!

I don't understand your point. I had a family member get muggedcin Boston several years ago. Doesn't stop me from visiting the city or advising others about Boston. Doesn't even stop that person from living there - their entire adult life so far.
I'm from the same city as OP. I've gotten mugged here. Didn't make me a recluse, or move. Wouldn't stop me from offering advice on this city - if only anyone ever asked :rotfl2:

I've lived in NY my entire life. That area is perfectly fine and staying outside the city and renting a car is an absolute horrible idea.

A variation is to look for a hotel that has convenient subway access to Manhattan... I remember the long traffic jams on my tour bus and quickly learned to use the subways.

The Brooklyn Marriott would be perfect~and cheaper.

It's right above the subway(Jay Street)station. They could hop on the A train (express) and be at 30th street (Penn Station) in no time.
