NYC... safe walking area?

UBER? Now you got all the cabbies angry.

Can I get there on public transit or do I need to rent a car?
You can easily take a train, altho taking a car nice too and opens up more areas, but public transit is very easy to do. Nice town I would recommend in the Hudson Valley where the train stops right in town and only an hour away include Cold Spring (Paul Newman used to live). it's a very nice safe, artsy town right on the river. Can rent kayaks, hike, charming shops, art galleries, restaurants, gorgeous views, all within walking distance of train. http://coldspringliving.com/about.htm

I didn't care much for Buffalo when I was there this past January.
Yeah I wouldn't say Buffalo is where I would recommend anyone to go to visit in NY, especially if you are looking for somewhere close to the City. No offense to people from Buffalo. You are almost to Canada, there is really nothing much there, you are waaaaaaay out in the boondocks. Hudson Valley region you can take train and you'll see beautiful views and a lot to do also. Not so much in Buffalo. Now the Finger Lakes area up that way are nice to visit. Buffalo is close to Niagara Falls tho, but then I would personally do Canada side not NY side.

While I would never want to spend the night in Niagara Falls, NY, I found out a few years back that much to my surprise the State Park along the falls is quite beautiful and worthwhile to visit. Have visited the falls since the 1970s and never dreamed that park was anywhere near the gem it is.

That's nice to know Cabanafrau. I only stated above bc the poster said they didn't like Buffalo and seemed to get their feel of NY from Buffalo. Nice to know about the State Park especially since we travel in a small RV. We'll probably get up to Niagara Falls again sometime and will definitely check that out.

I mention it only because in at least 8 visits to the falls I had no idea the park was actually very much worth visiting. Check it out online for all of the different areas and activities that are available if you end up heading that way.

Well I am happy to say my 86 year old mom and I actually walked in the city today to see a show and made it out alive. With all the misinformation on here you would think we would have been mugged or shot dead before we made it there!

Thanks. When we were in Buffalo area we didn't find much to do either. I apologize to any people from that way. It's just unless you are visiting the Falls, I think there are so many other better choices in NY especially for new visitors.

Well, we are here in Manhattan and having a great time! Hotel is a 5 minute walk from Penn Station, and at 11pm yesterday the streets were still full of people. We have a room on the 24th floor of the Wyndham New Yorker, with a full view of the Empire State Building out our window, with Madison Square Garden off to the right. The room is big by NYC standards, and pretty adequate by my standards, too. I think they put us in a handicapped-accessible room, which would explain the space. I think Wyndham has done a good job updating an old building, and although the carpets in the hallways are a little worn, the lobby is gorgeous and our room is terrific; new carpets and furnishings, super bed, and quite clean. There are 2 elevator banks with 5 or 6 lifts each- one is for floors 0-19, the other for floors 20-40, so the wait to exit/enter the hallways isn't too bad. So far, so good!! I love NYC!!

Watch out for all of that crime!

DH was down for the Yankee game last night and ran into NO muggers...in the BRONX... at midnight! Imagine that :H

So happy you are having a good time! New York is a place like no other! :yay:

We had a GREAT time! DD's audition was short; there were about 250 auditioning, this is one of 3 or 4 audition sites, and there are only about 10 openings, so she knew it was a long shot going in. Oh well... you can't get the job if you never try, right? The hotel location was fine- easy walk from Penn Station on well-populated streets. When DD went to her audition I walked uptown the the Barrymore theater to get rush tickets for Curious Incident. The walk from the hotel, at 8th and 34th, to the theater on 47th between 7th and 8th, took me about 20 minutes, and my pace is a stroll. We saw the matinee, met a friend at the Rum House across the street in the Hotel Edison (think iconic bar from the 1940s- actually pretty fun), then walked into the center of Times Square and over to Havana Central for dinner (and more drinks- a pitcher of mojitos, YUM!!!). DD and I walked around Times Square for a bit, heading back to the hotel around 11pm. The walk was, once again, fine. Lots of people still out and about, walking "home" after the theater, etc. We stayed on the sidewalk on the eastern side of 8th Ave., though, as the Port Authority Bus Terminal (at 41st) had some eclectic clientele bedding down for the night on the sidewalk in front. I wasn't worried that this was dangerous, just easier to avoid by walking on the opposite side of the street. On Thursday morning, it was very convenient to be able to walk down one short block, cross the street, and be at the Amtrak terminal in Penn Station.

We had a wonderful time!! NOW we want to go again, for several nights, and just go to shows and eat/drink amazing things. I love NYC, and am very pleased with the hotel we chose. Thanks to everyone for their replies- I hate feeling anxious about hotel choices/locations. This worked out terrifically well!! (well... except for the audition results, but that was pretty much as expected...)
