NYC... safe walking area?

I work in the area you're talking about and it's fine. Between the Garden & Penn station there's always people around as well as a law enforcement presence. Have a great time and good luck to your daughter with her audition.

I agree the stuff you see on the news about the shooting's in the subway and pushing people in front of an on coming subway freaks me out a little. we go to the city a few times a year but we either drive or take metro north down. I had a family member get mugged and cut up in the city a few year's ago, so that makes me a little uneasy

Sorry about your family member- hope he/she is OK. My sister and BIL live in New Orleans- he's been mugged 3 times at gunpoint when taking money out of an ATM late at night. (DUH, plan your bank trips better!) DH and I were mugged one time when we were visiting them. Neither of these incidents keeps me from visiting NOLA- we LOVE it there! However, it really emphasizes to me the need to be SMART in the city, don't put yourself in foolish situations, and know and stay aware of your surroundings. That's why I asked the original question- because I wasn't familiar with this neighborhood!

By the way, I booked at the Wyndham New Yorker. I got a AAA rate of $215 a night, although with fees and taxes it's about $525 for two nights. Sigh... it's always about the bottom line, I guess! Thanks for everyone's help and the good wishes for my daughter!

Another Native New Yorker here you'll be perfectly safe as others who truly know the area have stated. I get so weary of people not in the know needlessly scaring others.

NYC has been wonderful since the Guiliani days. I think upstate NY has more to worry about lately with 2 violent convicts on the loose. That just goes to show anything can happen anywhere. Don't get " big city " paranoid.

Haha! I'm way more uncomfortable in some areas of my own city and Albany than I am in Manhattan! :rotfl:

I guess you don't live in new york
I lived in nyc for many years and commuted daily for more. I have also lived in Nola and worked in Newark. (And lived in assorted other big cities worldwide). The op has little to worry about in nyc at that time as long as she aware of her surroundings. I bring my young children into the city regularly. If there was a safety concern I wouldn't do that. I'm sorry if you are uncomfortable in the city but that doesn't make it unsafe. As for the suggestion to rent a car, that is just crazy! Nya is walkable and has wonderful public transportation. Millions of people use it each day without a problem.

wow that is crazy expensive for a hotel, what is you daughters plan for living if she get's this job, Brooklyn is a good cheap part of the city to live in

why not look into staying outside the city and renting a car
Rent a car to go into NYC?! We're 10 miles away, and almost always take public transportation. Are you very familiar with NYC? OP, walking is safe, and don't worry about bein too far. Manhattan is pretty small, and easy to get around.

Please stop. You have no idea what you're talking about.

OP, that area is perfectly safe. Everything you are talking about is within a few blocks of each other. NYC (and especially midtown) is extremely safe.

I agree everything sounds pretty close together, and are heavily congested.

.

What! I'm sorry you have no idea what you are talking about. Real estate in Brooklyn has gone through the roof. Areas that use To be cheap have now gentrified and the rents are through the roof. It can be cheaper to live in Manhattan than Brooklyn.

I really can't agree with what you are saying in this thread. $525 for 2 nights is not expensive. In fact it's cheap for Manhattan. I've never paid that low. The area the op is going to is very safe, I've never had a problem or even have seen anything suspect in that area. My now young adult daughter goes there often, is there now, and walks all over Manhattan and has never had a problem. I let her walk all over as a high schooler in that area and was a very protective father. I wouldn't let her walk to a 7/11 in Orlando. You really should be sure of the info you are handing out to people who are asking for help. Don't give advice on a subject that you obviously have no idea about.

You know folks, the OP is okay with the rate. She's well aware of what she's doing. She just wanted to be sure she was going to be staying in a safe area, and she's been assured of that. She's a well seasoned traveler and knows what she's doing.

Hope your daughter does well, OP!

Please bow out of this thread. Every statement you make is more preposterous than the one that came before it.

I've got to agree. It's nice that you want to help, but your information isn't up-to-date.

A cardboard box is about the only cheap thing you'll find in Brooklyn.

I really don't know much about NYC do you?

Off topic, WOW 250 a night for a night in NYC? I guess I will save more pennies behore trying to visit there.

Well, there a few factors here - 1. it's a last minute booking - like any vacation destination, if you shop around in advance, you can find deals. 2. the OP needed a specific area to stay, because they didn't want to deal with any kind of delay in traveling. But as a tourist, you could do the stay somewhere else and use mass transit to get to places in NYC.

If you look around and are flexible you can find better prices. I tend to check travelzoo, look at hotels.com and direct hotel websites using AAA etc. I got the Wingate by Windham on 35th ST in April for $144 a night using AAA. It was a room with 2 queen beds and breakfast. I prefer to stay in the Penn Station area vs Times Square because it is easy to get to Times Square and a bit quieter for sleeping. In the past I got a 1 bedroom suite at Affinia Manhattan for $135 thru travelzoo over our April vacation including breakfast for 2 (we had 5 and went to the bagel store for 3 of us), Chelsea Savoy for about $140, and Skyline Hotel which is near the USS Intrepid and has an indoor swimming pool for $135. Some of these were 2 to 3 years ago. It helps that we are fine taking a bus or subway around Manhattan. However other times we may want to go we don't find great deals.
