DD is going to an audition in NYC (yes, another one!) on very short notice and hotel rates are obnoxiously high! I can get an acceptable rate ($540 for 2 nights :sad2: with all fees/taxes/etc.) at the Wyndham New Yorker, which is on 8th Ave. between 34th/35th Sts., which is a good location as (a) we are taking the train into NYC, arriving at 11pm and (b) the audition is on 8th between 36th and 37th Streets at 10 the next morning. However, I am not very familiar with the area. Will it be safe for the two of us to walk back from Times Square at night (the next night, not on arrival night)? Is it safe to walk from Penn Station to the hotel at night? I can get a similar rate at The Manhattan at Times Square (7th Ave and 51st St) but it's much further from both the train station and the audition venue. The New Yorker gets better reviews, but The Manhattan is in the middle of Times Square, pretty much, which is exciting for out-of-towners! I can't decide what to choose... any help?

It's a perfectly safe area. It's the type of area that will be busy and full of people all night long, and you won't feel like you're walking down a dark secluded street. Either hotel choice is fine, but if you choose the one in Times Square I would take a cab to get there just because it will be late, and you'll be tired and won't want to walk all the way with bags.

I know exactly where your daughter is auditioning. I take classes there twice a year. If you haven't been there yet- it's a very busy area, right near Penn Station. Cops everywhere. You'll be safe, I promise :)

(PS- if you have any questions about that area, places to eat, most convenient way to get from point a to point b, feel free to PM me!)

My son is doing a show in NYC right now. We looked into that hotel but heard too much about bed bugs being there recently. You are right, hotels are crazy priced!

I'd go with the hotel close to the audition. I used to work in that area, and it is very safe. I've been in the New Yorker for conferences, and it's a very nice hotel. Stay there with no worries.

And you should be perfectly fine walking back from Times Square to the hotel.

why not look into staying outside the city and renting a car

That makes no sense at all. Just adds time and pressure to the situation. They'll be perfectly safe in the New Yorker Hotel. When was the last time you were in Midtown Manhattan at night? As long as they stay aware of what's going on around them, they should be fine.

You'll be fine! Just be smart. Keep your purse close on your body and just mind your business. I'm from the south and my husband is from NY - it took me a while, but I've learned that as long as I walk at a moderate pace, stay on streets where people are (no back alley's obviously), don't smile or be overly nice to strangers on the street, and basically ignore anyone who does try to speak to me (rare), that everything is fine. I carry mace as well but that's just because I'm paranoid/safe (depending on how you look at it!) :o

and don't give anyone any money

yes but walk fast
Especially in rush hour, or you'll get run over. ;)

Honestly, I would have no hesitation with my little sister roaming those NYC streets alone at 3 AM. It's a big city, there are miscreants, so you should always be aware of your surroundings, but that has little to do with time of night in NYC.

You'll be find. Be aware of your surroundings. Kept your phone away (they are prime targets for theft) and enjoy
