I need some help with this one.....

My DSIS has never been to NYC and is going to meet us there in March. I'm looking for a nice non chain hotel that won't break the bank.

What we'd like and what we can afford might be two different things. I want to give her a really good experience without going totally crazy.

I've settled on three shows (of course none of the tickets are available yet), and am also planning a spa day.

Do I have unrealistic goals? I really want her to have a great time. We just got back together after a major misunderstanding, and I don't want anything to go wrong on this trip!

TIA...

It probably depends on what you mean by affordable. My dad took my mom to Manhattan last year for their 30th wedding anniversary. I helped to find him a very nice hotel (clean, centrally located, etc), but it was still around $180 a night! Plus, the hotel rooms in NYC are REALLY tiny! Even for a couple of hundred a night, you're looking at a room smaller than the All Star resorts at WDW.

That being said, a hotel room is really just a place to sleep, especially in NYC, where there is stuff to do all day and night. If you really want to cut costs, you can get a hotel in Queens, near a subway station. The hotel rate will be a lot lower, and you can just hop on the subway to get into Manhattan. I had some friends visiting from the midwest last year and they saved a bunch of money that way.

Thanks.....

I should definitely keep that in mind.

For our anniversary, DH and I booked the Mayfair Hotel. The reviews on tripadvisor.com say it's very centrally located, teeny-tiny, clean and safe, with NO frills.

That's fine, we're not looking for frills, we're looking for a clean safe place in a convenient location. We don't plan to spend tons of time in the room.

You might want to call some individual hotels for their rates. The websites list the Mayfair at around 190/night, we called just for kicks and they quoted us a rate of $120/night.

How did you even get the $190 rate at the Mayfair? Sounds like we are going around the same time and I looked and couldn't see anything less then $322. I'm wondering if it would be worth trying to call them. Thanks for the info.

$120/night for the Mayfair is a great rate. I remember when we went it was around $200/night.
