NJ DIS Meet to Benefit GKTW - July 16! $1750.00 RAISED!! WAY TO GO! UPDATE in #293!

I was just thinking about tricky tray the other day! Is it a NJ thing? I haven't heard of it since I moved to MN. We have a bunch of Jersey trips back home planned this summer, so we may be able to attend - will have to see.

UPDATE!!!!

I spoke with the manager of the Perkins Restaurant in Flemington.
They would be happy to have us, especially since we will be raising money for GKTW!!

• They have 2 rooms available for groups. One holds 25 people, the other holds 40 people.
• Since we are fundraising for GKTW, there is no charge for the room and no minimum for food purchases. (But I would encourage everyone to eat heartily as a thank you!)
• We can have a silent auction/"tricky tray" (where is this term come from anyway??)
• Saturday afternoons are best- from 1:00-5:00 would be ideal for them. I thought this sounded good too.

So- how about Saturday, July 16th from 1:00-5:00 at the Flemington, NJ Perkins Pancake?

If it sounds like this would work- I'll start another "official" thread and keep an RSVP list and work out the details for the auction.

I first heard the term tricky tray a few years ago when my friend's son's school was holding one. I had no idea what it was until my dd's school was having one, and then I had to ask. When I was a child, it was called a "Chinese auction"...guess that is politically incorrect. Probably the same thing as a silent auction --- you purchase tickets and then put your tickets in a cup for the items you want to win. one ticket is pulled from each cup an that's the winner. all the prizes are donated. that's how it works here in PA

I'm worried about rain and the fee for the park. My vote is for a place with a party room. There's a Maggiano's in Bridgewater which is centrally located. There's also a Cheesecake Factory. Do they have party rooms?

I just attended a corporate event dinner at Maggiano's in Bridgewater. They have quite a few meeting rooms. We are also friendly with the couple who own Sol on US 22, near the Somerset/Hunterdon County line. They have a fairly large party room downstairs, and great Mexican food.

And on the park choices, there is North Branch Park in Branchburg. It is on Milltown road just north of 202/206 about 5 miles south of the Somerville Circle. There are pavilions there. I don't live in Somerset County anymore (moved to Warren County about 10 years ago), but I still have an office here in Bridgewater.

The Flemington Perkins sounds like a great idea! It's not quite as easily accessible by major highway as the Bridgewater area, but it is only about 12 miles south of Bridgwater. Also, there are outlet malls. ;-)

I remember Chinese auctions- I just didn't know they changed the name!!

Silent auctions are a little different. Each item has a little piece of paper in front of it with a starting bid/price. Then people walk around and decide which items they'd like to have and they add their name on that page with a higher bid attached. Usually you specify how much more each bid has to be... 50 cents, $1, or more. When the time ends for the auction, the bottom name on each paper "wins" the item and the winner pays the last price they bid.
It's "silent" since there is no auctioneer shouting and holding up items. You set the time limit for as long as you want. It can be a couple of hours if you want. There's usually a little bidding frenzy right before the time runs out- and it makes it fun!

I can see us doing either the tricky tray or the silent auction at the meet. Either way- we make money for Give Kids the World!

I'll be there with dds, ages 13 & 17, maybe dh.

I think a silent auction might be easier. With a tricky tray there would need to be tickets and then there would need to be time to go through and pull winning tickets.

Would we be able to have a 50/50 ?

I'm not sure on the 50-50. I know NJ has some pretty strict rules on 50-50 raffles and usually you have to be a registered, non-profit group to sell tickets. If someone knows NJ law better than I do- please help here. I just know when I ran a 50-50 for our high school marching band events- we had to file a copy of our non-profit form with the city first.

You need a 50/50 or raffle permit from the town in which you're having the event. That requires your tax ID number and a paid fee for the permit. I personally don't think it's worth it for this. If we want to send a cash donation to GKTW, I think a jar on the table asking for donations might be the best approach.
