Outlander: Blood of My Blood

I am a little confused. Are they rewriting history and Colum was injured rather than ill? Or did his injury just exacerbate his condition?
They wouldn't have known or understood the condition that Colum had. They would have traced it back to an injury just to understand why his legs were as they were.

I get that, but are they telling us that he was fine prior to the injury?

From what we’ve seen in this series so far, he’s been limping all along, before the horse accident.
