NEW YORK 2016 CRUISES planning & info thread. NYC

Does anyone remember what time they disembarked the ship last year, for those who sailed out of NYC in 2016? I'm embarrassed to say we were one of the families that sailed last year, but I can't remember the timing! When we got to the parking deck, my car was dead and so my recollection of the timeframe is thrown off a bit by that monkey wrench -- it took us a while to get someone who could come and jump my car.

Anyway, the time to be picked up from the port is being debated in my cruise group and I was curious if anyone remembers from last year what time they got off the ship, and if you had family/friends or booked private transfers, what time you were picked up from the port?

TIA!

We left our room at 7:28am and walked off the ship. We crossed the street to a waiting taxi and was in Penn Station by 8:04. It really was crazy how fast we made it. I would walk off the ship (if you can carry all of your luggage) and arrange to meet someone a couple of blocks away. While we take LIRR home, If I were being picked up, a few blocks from the terminal would be perfect.

I know this is from last year but does anyone know if the DCL Onboard Airline Check In Program is available for cruises out of NYC?

Someone posted another good hotel with reasonable rates (of course depending on party size and date) not too far from the port. The Holiday Inn Express Manhattan Midtown West. Just wanted to add it to this thread.

We are sailng out of NYC this October and I was JUST LOOKING at this exact hotel earlier tonight! And gasped....audibly....when it came back at $397US for one night before our cruise :eek::eek::eek::faint: It's just a freakin' Holiday Inn! Our time in NY is going to cost a fortune :scared1:

Yeah, NYC ain't cheap at all.

Also, like anything else, it depends on what else is going on. What dates are you looking at?

Since we are a family of 5, and most of the high priced Manhattan hotels would be incredibly small for us anyway, I am looking at flying into Newark and staying at the Embassy Suites right next door, which has a free airport shuttle. It is reasonably priced and works well for 5 people. Then we'll take an UberXL to the port the next morning. It appears to be about a 30 minute drive. After the cruise, we will stay in NYC for a few nights and most likely shell out the big bucks for a Manhattan hotel.

We stayed in New Jersey. That was the price we paid but it included parking and transportation to and from the port in a private car. Well worth it.

We are looking at flying in on October 4th (cruise is October 5-12th) and then staying overnight in Manhattan on the night of the 12th, flying home the evening of the 13th.

We are a family of 4, also looking at flying into Newark vs JFK (better flight times and a bit cheaper for Newark). Definitely thinking of staying the first night by the airport then taking Uber as well to the port. I will look at the Embassy by EWR, thanks for the tip!

I don’t know about the 4th, but the 12th is Columbus Day...and the Monday of ComiCon. So definitely busy times.

I knew it was a long weekend (because it's Canadian Thanksgiving that weekend as well) but didn't know about Comicon o_O Thanks for the heads up!

Is ComiCon being held at the Javits Center?

As far as I know. It usually is. Expect to see people dressed all over from Penn Station up through Times Square (and further out on the subways) though.

Angela, we did that cruise in 2017, (it was fantastic!), we stayed in New Jersey the night before the cruise and it was fine, I’d definitely do it again. We love Homewood Suites and this was a nice a nice one in a good location. I did pay a little extra to have a NYC view and am happy I did, it was worth it. It’s across the Hudson from the cruise port so we could see the Magic when we woke up in the morning. We ordered a car service to take us to the cruise port the morning of and then he took us to the airport when we got back into NYC.

Awesome, thank you! I'll add it to the list :thumbsup2

It usually is. I work on 35th and Ninth and love to watch the attendees walk by all decked out. Two years ago I was walking on 34th and saw a huge Baymax walking across the street towards the west side

Would you mind sharing which car service you used? And I assume you flew into/out of EWR? If so, how did you get from the airport to the hotel? And then, how/where did the car service pick you up after the cruise?

We used SuperShuttle to get from. EWR to the hotel and execucar to get to the port from hotel and port to EWR.

The logistics from the hotel to cruiseport was easy, they picked us up about an hour before our PAT, and that’s was about perfect. I really didn’t know what time to arrange pickup to get us back to the airport after the cruise though. I talked to our driver when he was driving us to the cruise and he just gave me his cell number. He told me when we got through customs to text him and he’d come pick us up. We waited maybe 20 minutes at the most for him, it was super easy.

I hope this helps.

This is very helpful, thank you! I do have one more question though. Everything I've read online says that they do not let car services into the port area to pick up passengers (only to drop off), and that we will need to walk a few blocks away from the terminal to meet up with a driver. Was this your experience?

I can answer that This is correct, but you don't have to walk a few blocks. You just have to cross 12th Avenue and meet your car on the northbound side.
